    Notizen: Summary By cyclo-condensation of β-diketones with oxamiddihydrazone 3,3′-bi-triazines with different substituents in 5,5′-, 6,6′-position and their corresponding iron(II)-trischelates were synthesized. The structures of the complexes tris-(3,3′-bi-1,2,4-triazine, 5,5′,6,6′-tetramethyl)iron(II) ditetrachloroferrate(III) and tris-(3,3′-bi-1,2,4-triazine, 5,5′,6,6′-tetraphenyl)iron(II) ditetrachloroferrate(III) could be solved by means of single crystal X-ray-analysis. Both complexes crystallize from racemic solutions in an enantiomorphic space group (P213 and P212121 respectively) with one molecule in the asymmetric unit, i.e. the rare phenomenon of spontaneous resolution by crystallization is observed. Hence, homochiral intermolecular interactions are strongly preferred over heterochiral ones.

    Notizen: Summary Based on a review of crystal structures we propose that with trisphenanthroline complexes the racemic layer is the preferred one, but with trischelate complexes of bipyridyl and related ligands it is the enantiomeric layer. Adsorption of complex cations is fast and kinetically controlled. Intercalation up to the bilayer arrangement is energetically only feasible if the monolayer corresponds to the energetically most favourable two-dimensional packing. Hence the reported chiral recognition power of clay minerals is founded solely in the lateral interactions of the guest-complexes. The clay mineral host is acting as an anion that, while strongly modifying the structure, does promote or merely does not prevent chiral recognition between the guests in the interlayer region. The achiral clay minerals themselves do not have any chiral recognition ability.

    Notizen: Summary Adsorptionisotherms of tris-(3,3′-bi-1,2,4-triazine)iron(II) complexes onto a well characterized montmorillonite are discussed in respect to the relative charge densities of adsorbent and adsorbat. While the adsorption capacities for trisbipyridyl and trisphenanthroline complexes differ for the racemates and the enantiomers they are equal for these complexes. Adsorption is limited to a monolayer. This backs the proposal that the observed chiral recognition phenomena are founded solely in the lateral interactions between adsorbats.
