In: Tight gas reservoirs - natural gas for the future
Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: An integrated study was performed with the objective to improve reservoir quality prediction from 3D seismics, geological data and concepts. Seismic facies classes, derived from Neural Network analysis, correlate with reservoir characteristics. They can be used for predictive exploration purposes. Deformation zones indicate the extent of extensional fractures, which can have positive or negative effects on reservoir characteristics, depending on the diagenetic facies. The diagenetic conceptional model has been substantiated, verified in essential parts, and extended (inversion of reservoir qualities), based on well data, modelling and seismic analysis. Petroleum System Modelling added the time frame for diverse relevant processes and enabled to evaluate their effects on hydrocarbon migration. The importance of pre-oil hydrocarbon migration and spatial distance to Carboniferous source rocks for Rotliegend reservoir characteristics must be stressed.

In: The Geology of the South Shetland Islands
Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Decption Island is a caldera formed by the subsidence of a group of overlapping volcanoes along arcuate and radial faults. Three volcanic episodes occured after the formation of the caldera and the location of those post-caldera volcanoes is controlled by the fault pattern which limits the caldera. Although it is possible to establish the relative ages of the four volcanic episodes, there is little information as to their absolute ages. It is probable that the latest eruptions occurred in historic times. Petrographically the Deception Island suite is a local alkaline deviation from the normal andesite-rhyolite association of the South Shetland Islands. Its lavas are characterized by an unusually high soda content. The sequence of crystallization is analogous to that of melts of certain composition in the system MgO-FeO-SiO2 crystallizing under conditions of strong fractionation. The geochemistry of the Deception Island volcanic rocks is reviewed and four new chemical analyses are presented.

In: The Geology of the South Shetland Islands
Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: King George Island is almost entirely composed of igneous rocks; four volcanic episodes and one intrusive phase are represented. The oldest volcanics, which are believed to be Upper Jurassic in age, form a calc-alkaline suite with an andesite-rhyolite association. Recent field investigations indicate there is no evidence for the extensive areas of sedimentary rocks previously recorded. The presence of regionally metamorphosed xenoliths in the Jurassic Volcanos indicates that they rest upon a Basement Complex. The early Tertiary Andean Intrusive Suite, which is petrographically similar to that of Graham Land, forms an axial core to the island. The majority of the Jurassic Volcanics have been metasomatized by these intrusions and the significance of the resultant secondary minerals is discussed. A linear pattern of Tertiary and Quaternary vulcanicity has been demonstrated and lavas of three distinct episodes are described. One of these volcanic groups is of unknown age, whilst the others are known to be Middle Miocene and Recent. The lavas include dominant pyroxene-andesites, basaltic andesites, olivine-basalts and rare trachyandesites. The petrogenesis of the volcanic site is discussed and crystal separation is suggested as the most important factor in their evolution. A geological map, compiled from all the available rock collections and field notes, shows the distribution of the volcanic and intrusive groups.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: This special issue of Pure and Applied Geophysics is the second of two volumes containing an augmented collection of papers originating from the Evison Symposium on Seismogenesis and Earthquake Forecasting held in Wellington, New Zealand, in February 2008. The volumes honor Frank Evison's interest in earthquake generation and forecasting. This volume includes descriptions of earthquake forecasting test centers through the Collaboratory for the Study of Earthquake Predictability (CSEP) program and the first results from the Regional Earthquake Likelihood Model (RELM) experiment in California. Other papers discuss methods of testing predictions, in particular by the use of error diagrams. There is discussion of prediction methodologies using seismicity, including an application of the statistical technique of Hidden Markov Models to identify changes in seismicity and a new technique for identifying precursory quiescence. Several papers employ other data besides seismicity, such as geologically determined faults, calculations of stress changes via Coulomb stress modeling, tomographically determined velocity structure, groundwater, crustal deformation, and comparisons of real earthquakes to synthetic seismicity determined from hypothesized earthquake physics. One paper focuses on the prediction of human casualties in the event that a large earthquake occurs anywhere on the globe. The volume will be useful to students and professional researchers who are interested in the earthquake preparation process and in converting that understanding into forecasts of earthquake occurrence.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: The Caledonides are a major orogenic belt that stretches from the Arctic, through Scandinavia, East Greenland, Britain and Ireland into the Atlantic coast of North America. Following the break-up of Rodinia, the Caledonides formed in the Palaeozoic by the drifting of various continents and their eventual aggregation in the Silurian and Devonian. The orogen subsequently fragmented during the opening of the Atlantic Ocean. This volume brings together 25 papers presenting the results of modern research that investigates the orogenic processes and the provenance of specific components of the belt. The contributions reflect different lines of research, linking traditional field studies with modern analytical techniques. In addition three overview papers summarize the main features of the belts in Scandinavia, Svalbard, East Greenland, Britain and Ireland, highlighting the advances made since the last major synthesis of the Scandinavian Caledonides 30 years ago, and discussing important open questions.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: The Palaeoproterozoic era (2500–1600 Ma) was a critical period of Earth history, with dynamic evolution from the deep planetary interior to its surface environment. Several lines of geological evidence suggest the existence of at least one pre-Rodinia supercontinent, named Nuna or Columbia, which formed near the end of Palaeoproterozoic time. Prior to this assembly, there may have been an older supercontinent (Kenorland) or perhaps only independently drifting supercratons. The tectonic records of amalgamation and dispersal of these ancient landmasses provide a framework that links processes of the deep Earth with those of its fluid envelope. The sixteen papers in this volume present reviews and new analytical data that span the geological record of Palaeoproterozoic Earth and provide a current picture of Palaeoproterozoic research. The volume provides a useful reference book for students and professional geoscientists interested in this important period of global evolution.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: This special issue of Pure and Applied Geophysics is one of two volumes containing an augmented collection of papers originating from the Evison Symposium on Seismogenesis and Earthquake Forecasting held in Wellington, New Zealand, in February 2008. The volumes honor Frank Evison's interest in earthquake generation and forecasting. A biography of Frank Evison and a list of his publications is included, as well as review papers and new research papers in the field. The volume includes papers related to Frank's most abiding interest of precursory earthquake swarms. The research contributions cover a range of current forecasting methods such as the Epidemic-Type Aftershock model, the Every Earthquake a precursor According to Scale model, Pattern Informatics, Reverse Tracing of Precursors, stochastic models of elastic rebound, and methods for handling multiple precursors. The methods considered employ a variety of statistical approaches to using previous seismicity to forecast future earthquakes, including regional and global earthquake likelihood models and alarm-type forecasts. The forecast time-frames of interest range from the short time-frame associated with clustering of aftershocks to the long time-frame associated with recurrence of major earthquakes. A recurring theme is the assessment of forecasting performance, whether by likelihood scores, skill scores, error diagrams, or relative operating characteristic tests. The volume will be useful to students and professional researchers who are interested in the earthquake preparation process and in converting that understanding into forecasts of earthquake occurrence.
