Notizen: The phosphorylation of cross-linked polystyrene resins has been previously described. As seen by their interaction with lupus antibodies, these polymers were found to mimic either DNA or phospholipid antigens, depending on the degree of substitution by phosphate groups. When an alkyl spacer was included between phosphate groups and macromolecular chains, difficulties in synthesis and desorption of the biological species from the resins were seen. In this article, kinetic aspects of the synthesis of phosphorylated polymers, possessing sulfamide spacers, are discussed. The characterization of these phosphorylated polymers by acidimetric titration is extensively described. This technique differentiates and quantifies the grafted phosphate groups, which can be either phosphomonoester or phosphodiester in nature. We demonstrate that these polymers form complexes with calcium ions, and that the affinity of the ions is closely associated with the type of phosphate groups. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: Insoluble functional synthetic random copolymers are able to develop at their surfaces specific interactions with biologic components. Crosslinked phosphorylated polystyrene derivatives were previously shown to mimic DNA antigen because they interacted with anti-DNA antibodies found in the sera of systemic lupus erythematosus patients. These biospecific surfaces were postulated to be able to bind other DNA-binding proteins such as RNA polymerase II transcription factors. Indeed, these proteins play a major role in gene regulation in mammalian cells. This hypothesis was checked by adsorption and elution of HeLa cell nuclear extracts on a 72% phosphorylated resin. The composition of the eluted fractions were analyzed by electrophoresis, and the biologic activity of the transcription factors was tested using an in vitro transcription assay. The results showed that USF, TATA-binding protein (TBP), and TFIIB were specifically adsorbed on the polymer and that all eluted factors kept their biologic activity. Therefore, randomly phosphorylated polystyrene derivatives may be useful for the fractionation of RNA polymerase II transcription factors. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Beschreibung: Aims Many observations concerning biological and ecological differentiation between narrow endemic and widespread congeneric plant species suggest that narrow endemic species are constrained to colonize marginal habitats because of a low tolerance to competition. Despite this topic being an important issue both for understanding evolutionary processes leading to endemism and for conservation purposes, few studies have been performed to compare competitive abilities between endemic and widespread species. Here, we present two independent experiments performed under controlled conditions using two different pairs of endemic and widespread congeneric species: Centaurea corymbosa / Centaurea maculosa and Arenaria provincialis / Arenaria serpyllifolia , both endemic species occurring in rocky calcareous habitats . Methods Mature seeds of C. corymbosa and C. maculosa were sown in pots containing ramets of the common grass, Brachypodium retusum . Pots were sorted in three treatments according to grass cover (low, intermediate and high). A control treatment (without competition) was also used. Germination, seedling survival and rosette growth were followed. For the comparisons between A. provincialis and A. serpyllifolia , seeds from natural populations were first sown without a competitor. One week after germination, healthy seedlings were transplanted in pots without Brachypodium seedling (control) or containing two Brachypodium seedlings (low competition) or four seedlings (high competition). We checked the number of capsules per individual, and we harvested the biomass after capsule maturation. Important Findings Despite differences in the protocol design, results are congruent, and in both cases, endemic species are highly affected by the presence of a competitor, as are the widespread species, although we did not detect any differences between species for response to competition. The results are discussed in relation to processes leading to endemism, suggesting that the specialist model is more likely for both the study species. The present study also contributes to guidelines for the conservation of rare species in relation to landscape modification in the Mediterranean area.

Beschreibung: Grand societal challenges call for a transition from a society based on finite fossil resources towards a bio-based economy, based on renewable resources. Such a transition should involve not only the energy sector, but also the manufacturing sector. As acknowledged in the European Bioeconomy Strategy, the promotion of a bioeconomy is dependent on policy efforts across a wide spectrum of policy spheres. In the literature on sustainability transitions, this insight is captured in the increasing interest in the concept of policy mixes or policy strategies for promoting transitions to more sustainable modes of production and consumption. In this paper, we present a comparative analysis of bioeconomy strategies in Germany and Italy with a focus on the bioplastics sector. The paper adds to the existing literature on policy mixes by extending the concept of a policy strategy and applying it for the purpose of the comparative analysis. Moreover, the analysis is linked to the discussion on multi-level systems of governance in the European Union. A key finding is that linkages between the two policy strategies via policy making within the European Union have helped in reinforcing the nascent transition to a bio-based economy in Europe.

Beschreibung: Grand societal challenges call for a sustainability transition away from a fossil-based society toward a bioeconomy, in which energy and manufacturing production processes are based on sustainable biological resources. In this context, the forest bioeconomy can play a key role, as it links the entire forest value chain, from the management and use of natural resources to the delivery of products and services. The paper adds to the existing literature on policy mixes, seeking to identify effective policy mixes in support of the European circular forest bioeconomy. To this end, we employ a two-step methodology involving a fuzzy inference simulation, to assess the most suitable policy mixes to promote forest sector development. We considered different scenarios in order to identifying the most suitable policy mix. This analysis of alternatives revealed a number of interesting findings regarding the relative effectiveness of different policy mixes. Strengthening environmental policy resulted to be a precondition for an effective policy mix. According to stakeholder knowledge, the policy mix that performs best in pushing the bio-based forest to evolve in a circular and innovative trajectory, combines “climate mitigation policies” with “sustainable forest management policies,” “R&D policies” and “awareness raising policies.”
