Notizen: The giant magnetoresistance (GMR) effects in sandwiched Co/Cu/Co and Co/CuMn/Co structures have been investigated. The GMR oscillates with the spacer thickness for both cases, but is nearly antiphased. With diluted Mn atoms in the Cu spacer, the GMR curve as a function of the magnetic field changes a lot, and the saturation/switching field for GMR can be reduced greatly compared with that in Co/Cu/Co systems. This may indicate one way to obtain a highly sensitive GMR. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: For sputtered Co57Mn43/Si film samples with different ferromagnetic thickness, the spectra of the complex magneto-optical polar Kerr rotation and optical constants were ex-situ measured. For 5 nm-thick Co57Mn43 film, the Kerr rotation around 4.3 eV was enhanced by a factor of about 10 times with lower loss of the signal intensity as compared to the thick film. Numerical calculations show that the enhancement effect is attributed to an interplay between optical properties of Co57Mn43 and substrate Si that has a strong interband transition (E2) near 4.3 eV. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The magneto-optical and optical properties of GdFe single layer films, which are covered with a thin Si3N4 layer, were studied in the visible wavelength region. A Kerr rotation peak and a reflectivity drop were observed near 4.1 eV in GdFe alloyed films and attributed to the Gd element. Compared with the single thick GdFe film, the Kerr effect of SiN/GdFe bilayers was enhanced, due to the optical interference between Si3N4 and GdFe. The Kerr rotation of GdFe films showed a nonlinear function of the compositions in the whole measured wavelength range. Magneto-optical measurements directly evidence the spin–flip in the GdFe films as the Gd content increased from 20.7 to 24.2 at. %, which showed advantages over conventional magnetometry. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We have studied the electronic structure and optical properties, in the photon energy range of 3.0–4.5 eV, of sputtered Co/Ag multilayers with a scanning ellipsometer and Kerr spectrometer. It is found for the multilayer series Co(1.2 nm)/Ag and Co/Ag with dCo/dAg=2/3 that the screened plasma frequency ωp* of the multilayers and the interband transition frequency ω0 for L3→L2′ (d band to Fermi surface near the L point) in the Ag layers shift towards lower energy with increasing Ag layer thickness or modulation wavelength. For the second series of samples, the Kerr rotation peak also shifts towards lower energy with increasing modulation wavelength. For a third series of Co/Ag(1.3 nm) multilayers, only ω0 moves towards lower energy with an increasing Co layer thickness. The variation of ω0 is not easily explained in terms of internal strains and changes of the lattice constants in the Ag layers. Further theoretical analysis is needed. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: In this paper we have prepared Fe/Cu, Ag, Au/Fe sandwiches by ion beam sputtering and studied the interlayer coupling behavior by ferromagnetic resonance technique. In these sandwiches the Fe and noble metal layers are polycrystalline in the textures of (110) and (111), respectively. It is found that the in-plane resonance field and the linewidth oscillate as a function of nonmagnetic layer thickness in a period of about 1.0 nm for Fe/Cu, Au/Fe structures, and 1.4 nm for Fe/Ag/Fe system. It is suggested that the interlayer coupling strength between the ferromagnetic layers oscillates in the same period with the resonance field. An in-plane anisotropy was found in Fe/Ag/Fe system. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: In this article the magneto-optics of magneto-optical (M-O) layered structures have been studied theoretically and experimentally. For the air/M-O/air configuration, an analytic expression between the apparent complex Faraday rotation and the eigenvalue φ˜F=e1φ˜F′ can be obtained, when the M-O layers are semitransparent and weakly magnetic. The interference factor e1 is a function of the optical constants and the M-O layer thickness d, and the light wavelength. In these structures, the apparent Faraday rotation consists of two parts. One oscillates as a function of the M-O layer thickness and the other is proportional to the layer thickness. The oscillation period and the amplitude are determined by the optical constants of the M-O layers. For the air/M-O/reflector configuration, the Kerr rotation φ˜k oscillates as a function of the M-O layer thickness and approaches a constant as the thickness d→∞. If the M-O layers are semitransparent and weakly magnetic, the apparent Kerr rotation can be expressed as φ˜k=e2φ˜F′. For ultrathin metallic magnetic bilayered films the Kerr rotation is proportional to the M-O layer thickness and the enhancement factor is a function of the optical constants of the M-O layer and NM reflector. The magneto-optics of a Co spinel ferrite film, Co/Cu, Fe-Ni/Cu, and Co/Si structures have been studied experimentally. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Polar Kerr rotation spectra of Fe-SiO2 granular films were measured at room temperature in the wavelength region between 400 nm and 850 nm. A maximum Kerr rotation angle (θk) of 18 min was obtained when a magnetic field of 10 kOe was applied perpendicular to the film plane. We have measured θk as a function of Fe volume fraction (fv) of the films. It was found that θk increases with increasing fv and peaks at fv≈0.4. We also found that θk decreases as the Fe particle size increases. Our results indicate that the density of Fe particles and the interfaces between Fe particles and SiO2 matrix may play an important role in the Kerr rotation of granular films. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: For permalloy/FeMn bilayers, the exchange field and coercivity exponentially decay in time with the application of an applied field antiparallel to the unidirectional anisotropy direction. The relative change of the exchange field, 1−HE(t=∞)/HE(t=0), also decays in an exponential manner with the FeMn layer thickness. This dependence can be explained by using a thermal fluctuation theory. Moreover, calculations show that the thermal stability of the exchange coupling is independent of the permalloy layer thickness. These findings may be helpful to the design of the spin-valve giant magnetoresistance devices. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: This study investigated conidial dispersal in the field, and effects of simulated wind and rain on the dispersal of A. brassicicola on Chinese cabbage (Brassica pekinensis). Spores were sampled using a Burkard volumetric spore sampler and rotorod samplers in a Chinese cabbage crop. Disease incidence in the field was well fitted by a Gompertz curve with an adjusted r2 of 〉0·99. Conidia of A. brassicicola were trapped in the field throughout the growing season. Peaks of high spore concentrations were usually associated with dry days, shortly after rain, high temperature or high wind speed. Diurnal periodicity of spore dispersal showed a peak of conidia trapped around 10·00 h. The number of conidia trapped at a height of 25 cm above ground level was greater than that at 50, 75 and 100 cm. Conidial dispersal was also studied under simulated conditions in a wind tunnel and a rain simulator. Generalized linear models were used to model these data. The number of conidia caught increased significantly at higher wind speeds and at higher rain intensities. Under simulated wind conditions, the number of conidia dispersed from source plants with wet leaves was only 22% of that for plants with dry leaves. Linear relationships were found between the number of conidia caught and the degree of infection of trap plants.
