    Notizen: A large area, indirectly heated cathode capable of continuous, high- current electron emission is described. The cathode assembly utilizes an indirectly heated lanthanum molybdenum carbide (LaMo) disk as the thermionic electron emitter. Other cathode shapes are also discussed. The disk cathode emits up to 500 A of electrons at an average of 11 A/cm2 in continuous operation in a plasma discharge. LaMo material is machinable and is not fragile even after extended operation. Careful fabrication and conditioning of the LaMo carbide surface is required. The electron emission capability depends strongly on producing the proper fine grain structure of the molybdenum carbide surface layer to allow adequate diffusion of lanthanum to the surface. Failure to produce the correct surface structure results in intermittent electron emission. The electron emission was not affected by exposure to both air and water during operation, but the emission is poisoned by small amounts of tungsten on the surface. After proper preparation, this intermediate temperature electron emitter is very rugged and has a long lifetime.

    Notizen: A new screw pump or extruder has been constructed with the goal of testing the drag flow analysis currently used in the evaluation of polymeric extruders. The new device has been constructed in a manner that allows the barrel, screw helix, and screw core to be rotated independently or in pairs. The experimental results of the flow produced for rotation of the barrel agree well with the theory. However, the flow produced by rotation of the screw elements does not agree with the predictions of the currently accepted theory. The experimental results indicate that the primary element that produced fluid propulsion when the screw is rotated is the screw helix. A new qualitative theory is proposed that is in agreement with the data.

    Notizen: A study of the effect of extrusion conditions on the degradation of high density polyethylene was carried out. The extent of degradation was quantified by dynamic viscometry. The effect of barrel temperature profile, screw speed, and feed rate on the degradation of high density polyethylene was determined. The viscosity response of high density polyethylene is complex with respect to extrusion conditions. Residence time studies were carried out to correlate the viscosity data. Simulations of simple theoretical models give an insight into the flow behavior of the polymer in a twin screw extruder.

    Notizen: The experimental data obtained for the nucleation of microcellular foams are compared with the theoretical model developed in the first part of this paper. Polystyrene (PS) with rubber particles as nucleation sites is used as an exploratory system. Nitrogen is used as a physical blowing agent to nucleate the bubbles. The influence of process variables, such as saturation pressure, foaming temperature, and concentration and size of rubber particles, is discussed. Results indicate that all these variables play important roles during the nucleation process. A nucleation mechanism based on the survival of microvoids against the resisting surface and elastic forces has been modeled to obtain the cell nucleation density. Increase in saturation pressure increase the cell density to a critical pressure. Beyond this critical pressure, there is no increase in bubble number, indicating that all microvoids are activated. The effect of temperature is more complex than the effect of pressure. Increase in concentration of the rubber particles increase the nucleation cell density. In general, the experimental data are well described by the nucleation model presented in Part I.

    Notizen: An in-depth study of the effect of molding parameters on melt temperature was carried out, in which the melt temperature was measured with infrared probes. The effect of screw speed, back pressure, shot size, and polymer viscosity on melt temperature during plastication was determined. The melt temperature was not constant during injection, and was found to be as much as 44°C above the barrel temperature. The temperature rise results from viscous dissipation during plastication and adiabatic compression during injection. Measured temperatures are in qualitative agreement with a first order model of the process.

    Notizen: Most industrial and laboratory blown film lines use an air ring with one or more lips to produce an annular air jet that cools the polymer extrudate. Experience in operating blown film lines indicates that the air flow around the bubble plays an important role in both heat transfer and momentum trasfer. The former has received some attention in the literature, but few investigations have been made on the latter. This paper deals with the aerodynamic aspect of the blown film process. An air flow field similar to that in the blown film process was produced by blowing air past a rigid model. Aerodynamic experiments were carried out to determine the velocity and pressure distributions, and the overall axial force on the rigid model. Theoretical predictions using the techniques of superposition of stream functions and macro-balances of mass and energy were compared with experimental data.

    Notizen: In order to obtain high-performance polymer and products, processing of crystalline polymers below their softening temperature has been employed and studied in recent years. It has gathered attention, for example, in the area of producing high-strength polymer rods and filaments of higher cross-sectional area for special applications. Die drawing and extrusion techniques dominate the processes used to achieve these products. Extrusion is primarily achieved by forcing the polymer through converging dies of circular and other cross-sections. The methods of solid-state extrusion processing practiced are primarily ram extrusion and hydrostatic extrusion. In this study, we investigate the process of producing cylindrical rods by ram extrusion of plastics at room temperature. Instead of using a converging die, right angle dies of varying extrusion ratios are employed to extrude three commercial grades of polyethylene. A theoretical analysis is also performed to predict the forces required during extrusion. The theoretical analysis closely follows the methodology presented by Coates et al. for the circular extrusion of polymers below their softening temperatures. ©1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notizen: Planarization of spin-coated polymer films is of great importance for the lithographic process in the microelectronic industry. Solvent retention is an important factor for determining the coating profile during spinning. In this research, solutions of polystyrene in toluene are spin-coated. The coating concentration during spinning is measured on-line using a laser interferometry technique. The optical measurement is evaluated by an off-line gel permeation chromatograph technique. The experiments indicate that a smooth coating surface is required to use the optical method for concentration measurement. The optical technique also provides information regarding the coating surface structure during spinning. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
