Notizen: Abstract  The study presents the findings of an impact analysis of public support by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, BMBF, in the field of materials research. The Project Management Organization New Materials and Chemical Technologies, NMT, at Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH is acting on behalf of the BMBF. More than 350 projects with industrial participation have been analysed to determine the effectiveness of the project funding in application-oriented materials research. In addition some projects were assessed in depth to provide case studies for various areas of materials science. The scientific and technical success as well as the commercial, ecological and sociological (job-market effects) impacts of projects finished for at least one year have been investigated by means of a questionnaire addressed to the industrial participants with the following results:

Notizen: Summary It is shown that the physiology of the corpus callosum, the greatest cerebral commissure, has made striking progress in recent years. Electrobiological, neurosurgical, and psychophysiological studies have demonstrated its functioning as an apparatus of immediate transmission of elementary sensory messages and of interhemispheric transfer of organized unilateral learnings. The symptoms which, in animal and in man, follow its complete section are now well known. These symptoms can be described as the manifestations of a disruption of mental unity, contrasting with the maintenance of a surprisingly good behavioural cohesion, and characterized, in conflicting situations, by the shifting dominance of one or the other hemisphere. Furthermore, the dependence of the bilateral synchrony of cortical electrical activity on the callosum has been confirmed by the long-term study of split-brain cats. In a discussion of the fundamental biological significance of the great cerebral commissure, the author stresses the theoretical importance of the recently demonstrated continuous interhemispheric exchange of callosal impulses, which reflects faithfully the fluctuations of the attention level of the waking brain and disappears completely in deep sleep and in barbiturate narcosis. The experimental data underline the essentially dynamogenic character of this tonic activity, but a more refined analysis may reveal its inhibitory components as well. By analogy with the rostral (rhinencephalic) portion of the anterior commissure which connects the two olfactory bulbs, it is suggested that the original function of corpus callosum may have been the maintenance of a dynamic equilibrium between the two neo-cortices. Its operation as a mechanism of interhemispheric communication and of duplication of memory traces would have been super-imposed on this primitive activity in the course of the phylogenetic evolution of the brain, culminating in the dominance of the right hemisphere in man.

Notizen: Summary The distribution of polyanionic glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) in the developing mouse vitreous was studied histologically by P.A.S. reaction, metachromatic staining by toluidin blue at various pH's alcian blue at pH 0.5 and alcian blue C.E.C. stainings, modified Hale's method with colloidal iron, and enzymatically with bovine testicular hyaluronidase. A subdivision of the vitreous developmental period into four phases and an early distinction between, the posterior and equatorial vitreous portions are suggested on basis of the results. The early vitreous, during the first developmental phase, exhibits a high content in GAGs. This property gradually vanishes in the posterior part during the second phase of development, while acid GAGs including possibly hyaluronate are present in the equatorial zone. During this second phase, the lens capsule present a strong P.A.S.-reactivity, especially positive in it's posteriors part. During the third phase, sulphated GAGs reappear in the posterior vitreous while non-sulphated material remains present in the equatorial zone. During the first two postnatal weeks (fourth developmental phase), acid GAG's disappear in the equatorial part of the vitreous but the maturing zonular fibres display the properties of sulphated GAGs. It is suggested that the histochemical maturation of the secondary vitreous starts around the 16th or 17th fetal day, i.e. much earlier than its morphological differentiation.

Notizen: Abstract A microcosm experiment was carried out to quantify the effects of organisms at various trophic levels on C and N mineralization after the addition of crop residues to arable soil. The effects of the bacterivorous nematodes Rhabditis sp. and Acrobeloides bütschlii and of the nematophagous fungi Arthrobotrys oligospora und Drechmeria coniospora on soil respiration and N mineralization were measured over 6 months at 20°C. In the presence of nematodes, C mineralization was increased during the first month and subsequently reduced; N mineralization was increased during the first 2 months and then reduced. The results support the assumption that nematodes influence C mineralization mainly indirectly by affecting bacterial activity, and N mineralization mainly directly by mineralizing bacterial biomass. A. oligospora contributed directly to C mineralization. The effect of both fungi on N mineralization was indirect and resulted from the reduction in the numbers of nematodes. The results showed that the effects of nematodes and nematophagous fungi and the mechanisms behind the effects may vary strongly in time, and are correlated with the type of organic matter decomposed.
