Notes: We present a reliable method to account for the magnetoresistance of resistance sensors which are used as thermometers in many low temperature (T≤20 K) experiments carried out in high magnetic fields (to 31 T). To apply the method, a set of isothermal magnetoresistance data, and a zero magnetic field temperature calibration are first necessary. A simple algorithm, which uses this data set, can then be applied to compute the temperature from the measured resistance at any field. The method is particularly useful for temperature dependent measurements at fixed field, or where, in cases where the temperature may change unpredictably during a change in magnetic field. We apply this method to the treatment of data in two separate experiments with the two different thermometers, RuO2 (below 1 K) and Cernox (above 1 K) sensors, respectively. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: By using a microwave cavity tuned oscillator (MCTO), the relative dielectric constant ε of nonpolar dielectric fluid was measured with high accuracy. The theory of this technique was studied in detail. A new formula for evaluating the uncertainty of the measured ε was derived. From the formula, we have found that MCTO has a locking characteristic and therefore only operates in certain discrete regions. We have also found that a higher resonant frequency f of the MCTO, a longer delay time of the delay line, and a higher quality factor of the cavity Q lead to a higher accuracy of the measurement. When the values of the above parameters are taken properly, the uncertainty measured ε by the MCTO may become as small as an order of 10−5. The ε of saturated liquid nitrogen was measured by this approach and the experimental results agree very well with the values calculated by our formula. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A high power rf transformer has been developed and implemented for the purpose of plasma production in a toroidal plasma source, PLADEPUS (plasma deposition at the University of Sydney), which is designed for plasma processing experiments. The plasma can be generated, either in a pulsed or a continuous mode, at electron densities up to about 1013 cm−3. The results show that rf power can be efficiently transferred to the plasma through the magnetic coupling of the transformer ferrite core. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: An experimental apparatus for accurate characterization of rf properties of superconducting samples near the transition temperature has been designed and realized. It is composed of a standard liquid helium cryostat equipped with a variable temperature insert. A feedback system allows temperature stabilization within 10−2 K around a chosen temperature. A simple, while exhaustive, thermodynamical model of the cryostat operation is presented together with the description of the temperature control system. The rf measurement technique is also presented with the first results obtained on a niobium sample used for calibration.

Notes: The heavy ion beam probe (HIBP) signal used to measure local density fluctuations in a plasma is also sensitive to modulation due to density fluctuations along the entire beam trajectory. A modulation model of the HIBP experiment on the Texas experimental tokamak (TEXT) is presented. The model includes profile information for equilibrium and fluctuating parameters, allows for differences in the radial and poloidal characteristics of the fluctuations, and uses realistic beam trajectories. It is shown that profile effects are important in understanding HIBP modulation and that modulation does not simply increase with line average density in TEXT. In addition, calculations of the modulation effects show that only the terms which correspond to in-phase signals at the two sample volumes are significant. Therefore, the modulation effects can be approximated with a real parameter. Under these assumptions, it is shown that only long correlation length, low wave number modes will contribute significantly to the corruption of the measured signal. The calculation of the modulation effects are consistent with the experiment. It is illustrated herein how the measured data can be used to set limits on the modulation signal without doing extensive model calculations. These limits show that there must be long wavelength fluctuations in the plasma.

Notes: An ultrafast quenched plastic scintillation detector was used to measure the fusion fuel ion temperature at low implosion (DT) neutron yield (5×108–3×109) in the initial experiment performed at the Shenguang II laser facility. The typical temperatures of exploding pusher targets for direct drive were around 4 keV and the uncertainties were ±15–23%. The detection efficiency of the detector to DT neutrons was calibrated at a K-400 accelerator. The time response function of the detection system was calibrated by implosion neutrons from a DT-filled capsule, which can be regarded as a δ function pulsed neutron source due to its much narrower pulse width than that of the measured neutron time-of-flight spectrum. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract We prepared several samples of YBa2Cu3O7−x thick films electrophoretically deposited on metallic substrates, thin films sputtered on dielectric substrates, and bulk pellets, and we tested their microwave properties. Various preparation techniques are described in detail and the importance of appropriate thermal treatment during the fabrication process is emphasized. Experimental results show that electrophoretically deposited thick films on silver substrates reached, after heat treatment, a surface resistance at 50 K of 4×10−2 Ω comparable with the silver value, while the same measurement before sinterization gave a value of 0.5 Ω. Either bulk pellets or thin films gave worse results, though a lack of sensitivity in our experimental apparatus could have influenced our data. The problem of sensitivity in the characterization of microwave properties of small samples is discussed in the appendices.

Notes: Abstract In the present work a cavity fully coated with an YBCO thick film was fabricated using an improved electrophoretic deposition technology with a special attempt to avoid the possible contamination of the superconducting powder during the milling process in the suspension preparation. A microwave experimental set-up was constructed to measure the rf behavior of the cavity in a wide temperature range. The loaded quality factorQ 1 and the shift of the resonant frequency vs. the temperature at various rf magnetic fields have been measured. Furthermore, the surface resistance and the penetration depth determined from the measurements were compared with the numerical calculation in the framework of BCS theory, showing good agreement with the theoretical predictions.
