Notes: Unless a special protection is provided pitting corrosion may occur on top and at the bottom of ballast tanks. Usually a partial coating (horizontal areas) is used in connection with cathodic protection by sacrificial anodes. More than two years' observation of coated and uncoated, cathodically protected containers has shown, that anode efficiency is generally better than 90%, and in many cases as high as 100%. The current densities measured depend from the point of measurement and are higher at the bottom, in particular when the latter is coated. On the basis of the measurement results it is possible to assess the protective current requirements for horizontal anc vertical surfaces.

Notes: Abstract Fracturing of carbon fibre/polyester composites has been studied by means of mechanical testing and scanning electron microscopy. Carbon fibres were surface-treated in several ways so as to vary the interlaminar shear strength of the composites, and the effect of this variation on the work of fracture was determined by means of Charpy V-notch impact tests and slow three-point bend tests on notched specimens of triangular cross-section. The effect of moisture on the fracture toughness was also studied by measuring toughness and interlaminar shear strength after exposure to steam. Improvement of the fibre/resin bond results, as expected, in an increase in the brittleness of composites and it appears that a purely mechanical bond, such as might be obtained by acid-etching the fibre surface, is less proof against deterioration in humid atmospheres than a chemical bond, such as can be obtained by the use of coupling agents. Estimates of the magnitude of various contributions to the fracture toughness show that in carbon-fibre-reinforced resins the effect of increasing the stiffness or load-bearing ability of the matrix and the work done against friction in pulling broken fibres out of the matrix contribute approximately one fifth and four fifths, respectively, of the total work of fracture.

Notes: Experimental data are presented describing the formation of porosity in styrene-divinylbenzene copolymers as a function of the organic components present during the suspension polymerization. The reaction system contains a mixture of diluents such as toluene and hexane, which results in matrices that differ significantly in pore structure from the porous resins so far known. From these data a model of the physical structure is proposed.

Notes: An outline covering the evolution of the more popular tire-reinforcing materials from 1960 to 1970 is presented. Technical and economic factors pro/con steel tire cord for that period are reviewed. Using the past period as a base, the present and future prospects for steel tire cord are analyzed. Comments on the present properties of steel tire cord in relationship to tire requirements are given. In addition, desirable and expected product improvements are covered with special emphasis on achievable product development.

Notes: The viscoelastic behavior of an ethylene-propylene copolymer is analyzed. Two different vulcanization procedures were followed; in the first a binary mixture of initiator-polymer was used, while in the second the polymer was diluted by a solvent. The networks thus obtained show a different viscoelastic behavior depending on the different vulcanization procedure used. Results, analyzed in terms of supramolecular organization being present in the amorphous material, give some important information about the molecular nature of the C2 coefficient of the Mooney-Rivlin equation, and therefore about the well-known deviations from the Gaussian theory shown by all rubber-like networks.

Notes: In this paper we report preliminary results obtained analyzing structural data and mechanical properties of a composite system prepared vulcanizing mixtures of cis polybutadiene and methacrylic acid with different acid amount. The structure was investigated by the small angle x-ray scattering, while the physicomechanical properties were analyzed carrying out stress and birefringence measurements as function of the strain at constant temperature.
