    Notes: One high-fat and four low-fat pork sausage formulations were made: P30 with 30% pork fat (P); P11-W with 11% P and 10% added water (W); P11-WC with 11% P, 9.5% W and 0.5% carrageenan (C); Pso11-WC with 6% P plus 5% high-oleic sunflower oil (So), 9.5% W and 0.5% C; and Pso11-WGcf with 6% P plus 5% So, 7.0% W and 3% defatted glandless cottonseed flour (Gcf). Sausage patty cooking yield was highest for P11-WC and Pso11-WGcf. TBA values for refrigerated precooked patties were lowest for Pso11-WGcf, whereas carrageenan had a prooxidant effect in low-fat patties made with all-pork fat. The oil had no adverse effects on lipid oxidation and sensory properties of low-fat patties with C. The monounsaturated to saturated fatty acid ratio increased by 53–71% in the So-containing low-fat patties when compared to P11-W and P11-WC patties.

    Notes: Abstract The influence of 2,3,5-triiodobenzoic acid (TIBA) on the transport and metabolism of indolyl-3-acetic acid (IAA) was studied in etiolated lupin (Lupinus albus L) hypocotyls. Double isotope-labeled IAA [(5-3H)-IAA plus (1-14C)-IAA] was applied to the cut surface of decapitated seedlings. This confirmed that the species mobilized was unaltered IAA and permitted us to measure the in vivo decarboxylation of applied IAA. A pretreatment with TIBA applied to the cut surface produced a partial or drastic inhibition in the basipetal IAA movement at 0.5 or 100 μM, respectively. Since TIBA inhibits auxin polar transport by interfering with the efflux carrier, the above results suggest that 100 μM TIBA is sufficient to saturate the binding sites in the transporting cells. Compared to the control plants, in vivo decarboxylation of IAA was enhanced in 0.5 μM TIBA-treated plants, while no decarboxylation was detected after treatment with 100 μM TIBA. The in vitro decarboxylation of (1-14C)-IAA catalyzed by purified peroxidase was moderately activated by 100 μM and unaffected by 0.5 μM TIBA. The paradoxical effect of TIBA in vivo vs in vitro assays suggests that the in vivo effect of TIBA on IAA oxidation might be the consequence of the action of TIBA on the auxin transport system. Thus, transport reduction by 0.5 μM TIBA caused a temporary accumulation of IAA in that apical region of the hypocotyl which has the highest capacity to decarboxylate IAA. In the presence of 100 μM TIBA, a concentration which presumably saturates the efflux carriers, most of the added IAA can be expected to be located in the transporting cells where, according to the present data, IAA decarboxylation cannot take place.

    Notes: Abstract The products of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) metabolism by incubating hypocotyl sections and decapitated seedlings of Lupinus albus were investigated. Single treatments using [1-14C]-IAA, [2-14C]-IAA or [5-3H]-IAA and double treatments using [1-14C]-IAA+[5-3H]-IAA were carried out. Extracts from treated plant material were analyzed by paper chromatography (PC), Thin layer chromatography (TLC), and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). When hypocotyl sections were incubated in [2-14C]-IAA, several IAA decarboxylation products including indole-3-aldehyde (IA1), indole-3-methanol (IM), 3-hydroxymethyloxindole (HMOx), methyleneoxindole (MOx) and 3,3′-bisindolylmethane (BIM) were detected in the 95% ethanol extract; a latter extraction with 1M NaOH rendered IAA, IM and BIM, suggesting that conjugated auxins were formed in addition to conjugated IM. In sections incubated with [1-14C]-IAA, the 1M NaOH extraction also produced IAA so confirming the formation of conjugated auxins. The same decarboxylation products and two conjugated auxins, indole-3-acetylaspartic acid (IAAsp) and 1-O-(indole-3-acetyl)-β-D-glucose (IAGlu), were detected in the acetonitrile extracts from decapitated seedlings treated with [5-3H]-IAA. After a double isotope treatment ([1-14C]-IAA+[5-3H]-IAA) of decapitated seedlings, the ratio 14C/3H measured in the HPLC fractions of the acetonitrile extracts confirmed the presence of decarboxylation products as well as conjugated auxins.

    Notes: Abstract CO2 exchange between the atmosphere and soil algal crusts of the Trachypogon savannas of the Orinoco Llanos has been analyzed using an open gas exchange system. These savannas encompass a wide range of physiognomic types, from herbaceous communities to savanna woodlands. A maximum CO2 flux of 0.207 mg m-2 s-1 was measured in the crusts of the Guanipa savannas, while in the other examined crusts (0.035–0.105 mg m-2 s-1) the flux was similar to values reported for terrestrial algae. The CO2 flux data were statistically fitted to the photosynthetically active radiation by a logarithmic relationship, and the photosynthetic efficiencies of the crusts were compared. The activation energy calculated for the CO2 fixation indicates that limitations by diffusion and photochemical processes were excluded in the Guanipa crusts (above 12 kcal mole-1), whereas they were evident in the other crust studied. An optimum CO2 incorporation as a function of the crust water potential was established and carbon gain strategies were proposed on the basis of the results and characteristics of the habitats.

    Notes: Abstract A series of studies were carried out to test the effect of the incorporation of Chilean hazel nut flour in sweet cookies at the levels of 0%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 20%. The proximate chemical analysis of the different flour mixtures showed a regular increase from 7.2 to 12.2%, 14.5% to 18.8% and 1% to 2.2%, respectively, decreasing at the same time with the percentages of water and carbohydrates. Chemical amino acid scores of leucine and threonine in wheat flour improved with the incorporation of Chilean hazel nut flour. The farinographic evaluation made to the different blends showed several changes occurred with the incorporation of Chilean hazel nut flour to wheat flour. These included increase in water absorption, decrease in dough developing time and weakening of the dough. Sensory characteristics such as appearance, texture, flavor and also acceptability improved with the incorporation of Chilean hazel nut flour into the cookie formulaes.
