Description: A study of the linear feedback shift registers corresponding to a subset of nonprimitive irreducible polynomials over GF(2) has uncovered a class of sequences with interesting structures and cyclic correlation properties. These families of sequences are made up of interleaved identical sequences which are from primitive irreducible polynomials. Furthermore, they have correlation functions which are two or three valued, being constant at zero or a small value throughout most of their length with the exception of a small number of impulses. Each interval between such impulses on the correlograms uniquely corresponds to (and thus uniquely identifies) the member sequence or sequences producing it. It is shown that these families of sequences have direct application as error-correcting codes.

Description: The high subsynchronous vibrations which are often forced vibrations caused by flow instabilities, such as stage stall were examined. Modifications to improve the rotor stability by changing the bearings or seals have little effects on the subsynchronous vibrations. Understanding of the differences between forced vibrations and self excited vibrations to properly diagnose the problem and to correct it, is recommended. A list of characteristics of the two types of subsynchronous vibration is presented.

Description: A numerical investigation of the multiple vortex phenomenon (MVP) for tornado like flows is conducted to determine the conditions for when a vortex becomes unstable and divides into smaller subsidiary vortices, as well as to determine the structure of these vortices. A three dimensional numerical model developed by Rotunno (1983) is utilized which has been demonstrated to successfully simulate MVP with properties observed both in natural as well as laboratory tornado like vortices. The MVP is generated for several swirl ratio conditions in order to determine the number of vortices generated for those flow configurations. These results are then compared to experimental measurements to validate the numerical model. The number of vortices produced is consistent with observational results made in the Purdue tornado vortex chamber. Furthermore, horizontal and vertical cross sections are taken through the vortices to determine the structure of MVP. Preliminary results indicate that tangential velocities within these smaller asymmetric vortices increase by 20% over values observed in a single axisymmetric vortex at the same swirl ratio.

Description: The Purdue Regional Objective Analysis of the Mesoscale (PROAM) is a Barness-type scheme for the analysis of surface meteorological data. Modifications are introduced to the original version in order to increase its flexibility and to permit greater ease of usage. The code was rewritten for an interactive computer environment. Furthermore, a multiple iteration technique suggested by Barnes was implemented for greater accuracy. PROAM was subjected to a series of experiments in order to evaluate its performance under a variety of analysis conditions. The tests include use of a known analytic temperature distribution in order to quantify error bounds for the scheme. Similar experiments were conducted using actual atmospheric data. Results indicate that the multiple iteration technique increases the accuracy of the analysis. Furthermore, the tests verify appropriate values for the analysis parameters in resolving meso-beta scale phenomena.

Description: Wall pressure fluctuations have been determined under the unsteady separation shock in interactions generated by unswept circular cylinders, using a nominal freestream Mach number of 5 and a freestream unit Reynolds number of 53 x 10 to the 6th/m. The distributions of shock frequency and period were calculated using a conditional sampling algorithm. The shock frequency distributions were all found to be broadband, with frequencies being typically 1-2 kHz. The results support the previous suggestion that pressure fluctuations in the separated flow drive the shock motion.

Description: The Purdue Regional Objective Analysis of the Mesoscale (PROAM) is a successive correction type scheme for the analysis of surface meteorological data. The scheme is subjected to a series of experiments to evaluate its performance under a variety of analysis conditions. The tests include use of a known analytic temperature distribution to quantify error bounds for the scheme. Similar experiments were conducted using actual atmospheric data. Results indicate that the multiple pass technique increases the accuracy of the analysis. Furthermore, the tests suggest appropriate values for the analysis parameters in resolving disturbances for the data set used in this investigation.
