    Description: High resolution in situ measurements of reactive nitrogen (NO(y)) and O3 were made in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere at a variety of latitudes and seasons. In the lower stratosphere, NO(y) and O3 are very highly positively correlated at all times and spatial scales sampled. The ratio NO(y)/NO3 is much less variable than either species measured separately. The ratio has a much weaker gradient with altitude than the mixing ratios of O3 or NO(y). The ratio is smaller and decreases more rapidly with altitude in the tropics than at midlatitudes. In the upper troposphere NO(y) and O3 are only weakly correlated. Their ratio in the tropical upper troposphere is about 0.005-0.025 and the ratio in the midlatitude upper troposphere is about 0.004-0.010. The NO(y) in the upper troposhere is probably partly due to lightning.

    Description: It is shown here that surface ozone concentrations at the South Pole in the austral summer decreased by 17 percent over the period 1976-90. Over the same period, solar irradiance at the South Pole in January and February decreased by 7 percent as a result of a 25 percent increase in cloudiness. It is suggested that the trend in the summer ozone concentrations is caused by enhanced photochemical destruction of ozone in the lower troposphere caused by the increased penetration of UV radiation associated with stratospheric ozone depletion, coupled with enhanced transport of ozone-poor marine air from lower latitudes to the South Pole.

    Description: We examine concurrent upper tropospheric measurements of CN (diameter greater than 4 nm). NO, and NO(Y) during the SONEX Experiment over the North Atlantic (Oct.-Nov., 1997). Elevated CN and NO(Y) concentrations observed in the upper troposphere are attributed largely to enhancements in convective outflows. We estimate that less than 7% of observed high-CN plumes (greater than 10000 /cc) may be attributed to aircraft emissions. Dilution of high-CN convective and aircraft plumes appears to be much more rapid than losses of NO(X) and CN by oxidation and coagulation, respectively, and accounts for much of observed CN concentrations. When taking into account of different time scales against dilution for observable aircraft and convective high-CN plumes (estimated to be 1:4), the contribution by aircraft emissions to CN concentrations is significant, about 20% of the convective source. We find no evidence that particle formation in convective plumes is limited by OH oxidation of SO2.

    Description: Experimental results are presented which confirm the diffraction effects predicted by the MacDonald (1915) form of the Green's function for the baffled field in the theory of trailing edge noise. Using this Green's function, the acoustic intensity of noise generated by flow over a trailing edge has been determined to be proportional to the 5th-power of the flow velocity.

    Description: The impact of aircraft emissions on reactive nitrogen in the upper troposphere (UT) and lowermost stratosphere (LS) was estimated using the NO(y)-O3 correlation obtained during the SASS Ozone and NO(x) Experiment (SONEX) carried out over the US continent and North Atlantic Flight Corridor (NAFC) region in October and November 1997. To evaluate the large scale impact, we made a reference NO(y)-O3 relationship in air masses, upon which aircraft emissions were considered to have little impact. For this purpose, the integrated input of NO(x) from aircraft into an air mass along a 10-d back trajectory (DELTA-NO(y)) was calculated based on the ANCAT/EC2 emission inventory. The excess NO(y) (dNO(y)) was calculated from the observed NO(y) and the reference NO(y)-O3 relationship. As a result, a weak positive correlation was found between the dNO(y) and DELTA-NO(y), and dNO(y) and NO(x)/NO(y) values, while no positive correlation between the dNO(y) and CO values was found, suggesting that dNO(y) values can be used as a measure of the NO(x) input from aircraft emissions. The excess NO(y) values calculated from another NO(y)-O3 reference relationship made using in-situ CN data also agreed with these dNO(y) values, within the uncertainties. At the NAFC region (45 N - 60 N), the median value of dNO(y) in the troposphere increased with altitude above 9 km and reached 70 pptv (20% of NO(y)) at 11 km. The excess NO(x) was estimated to be about half of the dNO(y) values, corresponding to 30% of the observed NO(x) level. Higher dNO(y) values were generally found in air masses where O3 = 75 - 125 ppbv, suggesting a more pronounced effect around the tropopause. The median value of dNO(y) in the stratosphere at the NAFC region at 8.5 - 11.5 km was about 120 pptv. The higher dNO(y) values in the LS were probably due to the accumulated effect of aircraft emissions, given the long residence time of affected air in the LS. Similar dNO(y) values were also obtained in air masses sampled over the US continent.

    Description: Airborne measurements of NO(x) total reactive nitrogen (NO(y)), O3 and condensation nuclei (CN) were made within air traffic corridors over the U.S. and North Atlantic regions (35-60 deg N) in the fall of 1997. NO(x) and NO(y) data obtained in the lowermost stratosphere (LS) were examined using the calculated increase in NO(y) ((delta)NO(y)) along five-day back trajectories as a parameter to identify possible effects of aircraft on reactive nitrogen. It is very likely that aircraft emissions had a significant impact on the NO(x) levels in the LS inasmuch as the NO(s), mixing ratios at 8.5-12 km were significantly correlated with the independent parameters of aircraft emissions, i.e., (delta)NO(y) levels and CN values. In order to estimate quantitatively the impact of aircraft emissions on NO(x), and CN, the background levels of CN and NO(x) at O3 = 100-200 ppbv were derived from the correlations of these quantities with (delta)NO(y)). On average, the aircraft emissions are estimated to have increased the NO(x) and CN values by 130 pptv and 400 STP,cc, respectively, which corresponds to 70 -/+ 30 % and 30 -/+ 20 % of the observed median values.

    Description: The equations of motion for structures with adaptive elements for vibration control are presented for parallel computations to be used as a software package for real-time control of flexible space structures. A brief introduction of the state-of-the-art parallel computational capability is also presented. Time marching strategies are developed for an effective use of massive parallel mapping, partitioning, and the necessary arithmetic operations. An example is offered for the simulation of control-structure interaction on a parallel computer and the impact of the approach presented for applications in other disciplines than aerospace industry is assessed.

    Description: Results of model calculations of the Venus ionosphere from 120 to 300 km are presented. The chemical scheme and reaction rates used are the same as given by Kumar and Hunten (1974) except that the electron temperature dependence of the dissociative recombination rates is taken into account. Calculations are made for low and high atomic oxygen models in which the O/CO2 ratios are 0.4% and 4% respectively at 140 km, and the results agree well in shape and magnitude with the Mariner 5 and 10 occultation results in the chemically controlled region. Reasonable agreement is obtained at higher altitudes if diffusive equilibrium and high vertical flow velocities (10 km/s) are assumed as upper boundaries for the Mariner 5 and 10 conditions respectively, although solar wind-ionosphere interactions are considered to be the controlling mechanism for the Mariner 10 results.

    Description: It is shown that rather tight constraints can be placed on the mixing ratio of atomic oxygen in the upper atmosphere of Venus, as well as that of CO and molecular oxygen, unless extraordinary processes which lead to a very large efflux of hydrogen from the planet are postulated. The analysis conducted is similar to the investigation carried out for the earth by Liu and Donahue (1974). If Jeans escape provides the main escape mode for hydrogen from Venus, the concentration ratio of atomic oxygen to carbon dioxide at 130 km is much less than 1% and some mechanism other than resonance scattering plus photoelectron excitation must account for the oxygen airglow.
