    Description: A radial heteropolar magnetic bearing capable of operating at a temperature as high as 1,000 F (=540 C) has been developed. This is a prototype of bearings for use in gas turbine engines operating at temperatures and speeds much higher than can be withstood by lubricated rolling-element bearings. It is possible to increase the maximum allowable operating temperatures and speeds of rolling-element bearings by use of cooling-air systems, sophisticated lubrication systems, and rotor-vibration- damping systems that are subsystems of the lubrication systems, but such systems and subsystems are troublesome. In contrast, a properly designed radial magnetic bearing can suspend a rotor without contact, and, hence, without need for lubrication or for cooling. Moreover, a magnetic bearing eliminates the need for a separate damping system, inasmuch as a damping function is typically an integral part of the design of the control system of a magnetic bearing. The present high-temperature radial heteropolar magnetic bearing has a unique combination of four features that contribute to its suitability for the intended application: 1. The wires in its electromagnet coils are covered with an insulating material that does not undergo dielectric breakdown at high temperature and is pliable enough to enable the winding of the wires to small radii. 2. The processes used in winding and potting of the coils yields a packing factor close to 0.7 . a relatively high value that helps in maximizing the magnetic fields generated by the coils for a given supplied current. These processes also make the coils structurally robust. 3. The electromagnets are of a modular C-core design that enables replacement of components and semiautomated winding of coils. 4. The stator is mounted in such a manner as to provide stable support under radial and axial thermal expansion and under a load as large as 1,000 lb (.4.4 kN).

    Description: Open loop, experimental force and power measurements of a three-axis, radial, heteropolar magnetic bearing at room temperature for rotor speeds up to 20,000 RPM are presented in this paper. The bearing, NASA Glenn Research Center's and Texas A&M's third generation high temperature magnetic bearing, was designed to operate in a 1000 F (540 C) environment and was primarily optimized for maximum load capacity. The experimentally measured force produced by one C-core of this bearing was 630 lb. (2.8 kN) at 16 A, while a load of 650 lbs (2.89 kN) was predicted at 16 A using 1D circuit analysis. The maximum predicted radial load for one of the three axes is 1,440 lbs (6.41 kN) at room temperature. The maximum measured load of an axis was 1050 lbs. (4.73 kN). Results of test under rotating conditions showed that rotor speed has a negligible effect on the bearing's load capacity. A single C-core required approximately 70 W of power to generate 300 lb (1.34 kN) of magnetic force. The room temperature data presented was measured after three thermal cycles up to 1000 F (540 C), totaling six hours at elevated temperatures.

    Description: Open loop, experimental force and power measurements of a radial, redundant-axis, magnetic bearing at temperatures to 1000 F (538 C) and rotor speeds to 15,000 RPM along with theoretical temperature and force models are presented in this paper. The experimentally measured force produced by a single C-core using 22A was 600 lb. (2.67 kN) at room temperature and 380 lb. (1.69 kN) at 1000 F (538 C). These values were compared with force predictions based on a 1D magnetic circuit analysis and a thermal analysis of gap growth as a function of temperature. Tests under rotating conditions showed that rotor speed has a negligible effect on the bearing s load capacity. One C-core required approximately 340 W of power to generate 190 lb. (8.45 kN) of magnetic force at 1000 F (538 C); however the magnetic air gap was much larger than at room temperature. The data presented is after the bearing had already operated six thermal cycles and eleven total (not consecutive) hours at 1000 F (538 C).

    Description: A Late Devonian to (?)Early Mississippian section at Hushoot Shiveetiin gol in the Baruunhuurai Terrane of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) exposes large parts of cyclic Famennian shallow-water siliciclastic shelf deposits composed of siltstones, sandstones, shales, volcaniclastics, and intercalated autochthonous carbonates. The youngest part of the section, possibly Early Mississippian, is represented by arkosic sandstones with large plant remains. The facies reflects a range from shallow-intertidal to outer ramp settings. In terms of conodont stratigraphy, the Hushoot Shiveetiin gol section ranges from the Palmatolepis minuta minuta Biozone to at least the Palmatolepis rugosa trachytera Biozone. Hiatuses of several conodont biozones occur due to the facies setting (erosion and reworked sediments which are recognized by reworked conodonts) rather than thrusting or folding. The environmental setting was characterized by coeval subaerial volcanism resulting in numerous pyroclastic deposits. The depositional environments and intense volcanic activity at the Hushoot Shiveetiin gol section limited the stratigraphic distribution, abundance, and diversity of many elements of the fauna such as brachiopods. Ostracods were very abundant and diverse through many parts of the section. Although limited in stratigraphic distribution, the crinoid fauna is the most diverse Palaeozoic fauna collected from Mongolia to date and supports the hypothesis that the CAOB was a biodiversity hotspot in the aftermath of the Frasnian–Famennian extinction event.

    Description: 〈title xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"〉Abstract〈/title〉〈p xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xml:lang="en"〉The drag coefficient, Stanton number and Dalton number are of particular importance for estimating the surface turbulent fluxes of momentum, heat and water vapor using bulk parameterization. Although these bulk transfer coefficients have been extensively studied over the past several decades in marine and large‐lake environments, there are no studies analyzing their variability for smaller lakes. Here, we evaluated these coefficients through directly measured surface fluxes using the eddy‐covariance technique over more than 30 lakes and reservoirs of different sizes and depths. Our analysis showed that the transfer coefficients (adjusted to neutral atmospheric stability) were generally within the range reported in previous studies for large lakes and oceans. All transfer coefficients exhibit a substantial increase at low wind speeds (〈3 m s〈sup〉−1〈/sup〉), which was found to be associated with the presence of gusts and capillary waves (except Dalton number). Stanton number was found to be on average a factor of 1.3 higher than Dalton number, likely affecting the Bowen ratio method. At high wind speeds, the transfer coefficients remained relatively constant at values of 1.6·10〈sup〉−3〈/sup〉, 1.4·10〈sup〉−3〈/sup〉, 1.0·10〈sup〉−3〈/sup〉, respectively. We found that the variability of the transfer coefficients among the lakes could be associated with lake surface area. In flux parameterizations at lake surfaces, it is recommended to consider variations in the drag coefficient and Stanton number due to wind gustiness and capillary wave roughness while Dalton number could be considered as constant at all wind speeds.〈/p〉
    Description: Plain Language Summary: In our study, we investigate the bulk transfer coefficients, which are of particular importance for estimation the turbulent fluxes of momentum, heat and water vapor in the atmospheric surface layer, above lakes and reservoirs. The incorrect representation of the surface fluxes above inland waters can potentially lead to errors in weather and climate prediction models. For the first time we made this synthesis using a compiled data set consisting of existing eddy‐covariance flux measurements over 23 lakes and 8 reservoirs. Our results revealed substantial increase of the transfer coefficients at low wind speeds, which is often not taken into account in models. The observed increase in the drag coefficient (momentum transfer coefficient) and Stanton number (heat transfer coefficient) could be associated with the presence of wind gusts and capillary waves. In flux parameterizations at lake surface, it is recommended to consider them for accurate flux representation. Although the bulk transfer coefficients were relatively constant at high wind speeds, we found that the Stanton number systematically exceeds the Dalton number (water vapor transfer coefficient), despite the fact they are typically considered to be equal. This difference may affect the Bowen ratio method and result in biased estimates of lake evaporation.〈/p〉

    Description: On July 15, 2021, a huge fireball was visible over Poland. After the possible strewn field was calculated, the first and so far only sample, with a mass of 350 g, was discovered 18 days after the fireball event. The Antonin meteorite was found August 3, 2021, on the edge of a forest close to a dirt road near Helenow, a small suburb of the city of Mikstat. The rock is an ordinary chondrite breccia and consists of equilibrated and recrystallized lithologies. The boundaries between different fragments are difficult to detect, and the lithologies are of petrologic type 5 and type 4. The rock is moderately shocked (S4) and contains local impact melt areas and thin shock veins. The low‐Ca pyroxene and olivine are equilibrated (Fs20.6 and Fa24.0, respectively), typical of L chondrites. The L chondrite classification is also supported by O isotope data and the results of bulk chemical analysis. The Ti isotope characteristics confirm that Antonin is related to the noncarbonaceous (NC) meteorites. One of the studied thin sections shows an unusual metal–chondrule assemblage, perhaps indicating that the metal in the chondrite is heterogeneously distributed, which is, however, not clearly visible in the element abundances.

    Description: This paper examines the generation of sound produced by high temperature supersonic jets. In particular, the question of the importance of supersonic instability waves to noise emission is considered relative to the role of Kelvin-Helmholtz (K-H) instability waves. Here, these waves are taken to be synonymous with the Mach emission process. Jet total temperatures from 313 to 1534 K are investigated using an axisymmetric water cooled supersonic nozzle designed for Mach 2. The aerodynamic and acoustic results of this study indicate that the dominant noise contributors are the K-H waves over the entire temperature range. Good agreement between measured and numerically predicted plume properties are obtained and an elliptic nozzle is used to demonstrate reduction of the K-H waves.

    Description: Optus launched its mobile satellite telephone service MobileSat in August 1994. This provided Australia and its neighboring waters with nation-wide mobile telephone coverage and still is the world's only domestic mobile satellite telephone system. This paper provides details of Optus' experience in developing and launching the MobileSat service, including (1) a retrospective of the issues that have waxed and waned in importance during the development and implementation phases, and (2) the strategy for future activities based on the experience gained in the development phase.
