Description: The chemical compositions (except for metals and sulfides in chondrules) of more than 500 chondrules from unequilibrated E, H, L, LL, and C chondrites were measured using a broad beam of an electron-probe microanalyzer. The compositions of chondrules can be represented by various mixtures of normative compositions of olivine, low-Ca pyroxene, plagioclase, and high-Ca pyroxene with minor amounts of spinel, feldspathoid, SiO2-minerals, etc., indicating that the chondrule precursor materials consisted of aggregates of these minerals. The Al, Na, and K contents of most chondrules reflect the compositions of the ternary feldspar (An-Ab-Kf) of the chondrule precursor materials, and chemical types of chondrules (KF, SP, IP, and CP) are defined on the basis of the atomic proportion of Al, Na, and K.

Description: The ferromagnesian chondrules in Allende follow a trend in the oxygen three-isotope plot that diverges significantly from the 16-O mixing line defined by light and dark inclusions and the matrix of the meteorite. The trend probably results from isotopic exchange with an external gaseous reservoir during the process of chondrule formation sometime after the establishment of the isotopic compositions of the inclusions and matrix. The Allende chondrules approach, but do not reach, the isotopic compositions of chondrules in unequilibrated ordinary chondrites, implying exchange with a similar ambient gas, but isotopically different solid precursors for the two types of meteorite.

Description: The genetic relationships between the petrology, hydration reactions, and isotopic oxygen composition in the Belgica 7904 (B7904) carbonaceous chondrite, and the relationship between B7904 and the CM and CI chondrites were investigated by characterizing seven components separated from B7904. The seven specimens included two partially altered chondrules, two phylosilicate clasts, two olivine fragments, and one matrix sample. The results of the analyses and thermodynamic calculations suggest that CI chondrites may have been produced in a two-stage alteration process from materials similar to that of the B7904 matrix, by reactions with liquid water in their parent body. The common CM chondrites may have undergone aqueous alteration in the parent body, in addition to hydration in the nebula, resulting in two-stage alterations; the parent body may have been different from that of B7904.

Description: A large capacity nickel electrode is provided in which the charging efficiency and discharge utilization coefficient are improved in comparison to nickel electrodes which are produced by the conventional method. Nickel electrodes retaining nickel active material or nickel active material and cobalt compounds on a porous nickel substrate are immersed in a cobalt sulfate aqueous solution whose pH is adjusted in the range of 3.5 to 6.0, followed by crystallization of the hydroxide or oxide by pyrolysis or immersion in alkali, thereby coating the surface of the nickel active material with cobalt crystals and simultaneously promoting alloying of the nickel-cobalt.

Description: Dhofar 378 (hereafter Dho 378) is one of the most ferroan lithologies among martian meteorites, resembling the Los Angeles basaltic shergottite in lithology and mineral chemistry, although it is more highly shocked than Los Angeles. All plagioclase (Pl) grains in the original lithology were melted by an intense shock in the range 55-75 GPa. Clinopyroxenes (Cpx) sometimes show mosaic extinction under a microscope showing that they, too, experienced intense shock. Nevertheless, they zone from magnesian cores to ferroan rims, reflecting the original lithology. Cpx grains also often contain exsolution lamellae, showing that the original lithology cooled slowly enough for the lamellae to form. Because all plagioclase grains were melted by the intense shock and subsequently quenched, the main plagioclase component is glass (Pl-glass) rather than maskelynite. Like Los Angeles, but unlike most basaltic shergottites, Dho 378 contains approximately equal modal abundances of Cpx and Pl-glass. The grain sizes of the original minerals were comparatively large (approximately 1 mm). The original plagioclase zoning has been severely modified. Following shock melting, the plagioclase melts crystallized from the outside inward, first forming outer rims of Cpx-Pl intergrowths (approximately 10 micrometers) followed by inner rims (10's to 100 micrometers) of An(sub 40-50) feldspar, and finally Pl-gl cores of compositions An(sub 33-50) with orthoclase compositions up to Or(sub 12).

Description: Development of female reproductive organs during sexual maturation was studied for Japanese common squid caught from feeding and spawning grounds. The female maturity was divided into six stages based on the histological observation of ovary. The maturity was compared with the ovary somatic index (OSI: ovary weight as a percentage of body weight), oviduct somatic index (ODSI: oviduct weight as a percentage of body weight), gonad somatic index (ovary and oviduct weight as a percentage of body weight) and nidamental gland index (m: a ratio of nidamental gland length to mantle length). Results showed that the female maturational process consists of two phases and ovary and oviducts development are correlative with the nidamental gland development. In the first phase, ripe eggs are produced in the ovary with the rapid development of the nidamental gland and in the next phase, ripe eggs are transferred into the oviducts and stored there until spawning. The nidamental gland development is slower in the next phase, wich suggests that the production of jelly material is started in this organ. It is possible to express the female maturity condition by GSI and m. These numerical values are GSI〉1.0 and m〉0.208 in yolk formation stage; GSI〉2.6and m〉0.290 in the mature stage.

Description: Development of male reproductive organs during sexual maturation was studied for Japanese common squid caught from feeding and spawning grounds. The male maturity was divided into five stages based on the histological observation of the testis. The maturity was compared with testis somatic index (TSI: testis weight as a percentage of body weight) and accessory gland somatic index (AGSI: accessory gland weight as a percentage of body weight). Results showed that sperm have already been produced in the testis even when the testis is a relatively small size, and that the male maturational process consists of two phases. In the first phase, sperm are produced in the testis and in the next phase sperm are transferred into the accessory gland, stored there in the form of spermatophore until copulation with the female. In the maturation stage, sperm are still produced, which means that copulating behavior is repeated by same male during this final sexual stage. It is possible to express the male maturity condition by TSI and AGSI. These numerical values are TSI〉0.5 and AGSI〉0.1 in the maturing stage; TSI〉2.0 and AGSI〉l.0 in the mature stage.

Description: Current measurements from three moored arrays on the Brazilian continental slope between 20 degrees S and 28 degrees S are investigated for the existence and strength of western boundary currents from near the surface down to the North Atlantic Deep Water. The Brazil Current is found to deepen southward from 100 m to more than 670 m and to strengthen its volume transport to 16.2 x 10(6) m(3)/s. Antarctic Intermediate Water is transported in a well-developed boundary current southward at 28 degrees S and northward north of Cabo Frio (24 degrees S). This result supports earlier suggestions derived from the analysis of hydrographic data that Antarctic Intermediate Water enters the Brazil Basin from the east and bifurcates as it meets the continental break off Brazil. North Atlantic Deep Water is transported southward in a weakly developed boundary current that leads to lower estimates of volume transport than expected from earlier hydrographic data analysis.
