    Description: We investigate induced seismicity associated with a hydraulic stimulation campaign performed in 2020 in the 5.8 km deep geothermal OTN‐2 well near Helsinki, Finland as part of the St1 Deep Heat project. A total of 2,875 m3 of fresh water was injected during 16 days at well‐head pressures 〈70 MPa and with flow rates between 400 and 1,000 L/min. The seismicity was monitored using a high‐resolution seismic network composed of 10 borehole geophones surrounding the project site and a borehole array of 10 geophones located in adjacent OTN‐3 well. A total of 6,121 induced earthquakes with local magnitudes MLHel〉−1.9 ${M}_{\mathrm{L}}^{\mathrm{H}\mathrm{e}\mathrm{l}} 〉 -1.9$ were recorded during and after the stimulation campaign. The analyzed statistical parameters include magnitude‐frequency b‐value, interevent time and interevent time ratio, as well as magnitude correlations. We find that the b‐value remained stationary for the entire injection period suggesting limited stress build‐up or limited fracture network coalescence in the reservoir. The seismicity during the stimulation neither shows signatures of magnitude correlations, nor temporal clustering or anticlustering beyond those arising from varying injection rates. The interevent time statistics are characterized by a Poissonian time‐varying distribution. The calculated parameters indicate no earthquake interaction. Focal mechanisms suggest that the injection activated a spatially distributed network of similarly oriented fractures. The seismicity displays stable behavior with no signatures pointing toward a runaway event. The cumulative seismic moment is proportional to the cumulative hydraulic energy and the maximum magnitude is controlled by injection rate. The performed study provides a base for implementation of time‐dependent probabilistic seismic hazard assessment for the project site.

The seismicity was monitored using a seismic network composed of 20 borehole geophones located in Helsinki area and in the OTN‐3 well located close by the injection site. A total of 6,121 earthquakes indicating fractures of 1–30 m size were recorded during and after stimulation campaign. Using a handful of statistical properties derived from earthquake catalog we found no indication for earthquakes being triggered by other earthquakes. Instead, the earthquake activity rates, as well as the maximum earthquake size stayed proportional to the fluid injection rate. The spatio‐temporal behavior of seismicity and its properties suggest earthquakes occurred not on a single fault, but in a distributed network of similarly oriented fractures, limiting the possibility for occurrence of violent earthquakes. The performed study provides evidence that the induced seismicity due to injection performed within St1 Deep Heat project is stable and allow to constrain seismic hazard.

    Description: Weak 0.28-keV radiation was observed from Her X-1 5 days before turn-on in the 35 day cycle. The observations were made from an Aerobee rocket. The 0.28-keV intensity is about 1/25 that observed during the on phase. Some evidence for X-rays above 1 keV is also present, and it is possible that the spectrum is different only in intensity from the spectrum in the on phase. The radiation may be X-rays from the vicinity of the neutron star, scattered by ionized material in the inner accretion disk, or may be thermal radiation from the inner accretion disk, or both.

    Description: The spectrum of the object suggested as a possible optical counterpart of GX 2+5, was studied, using the image tube scanner attached to the 3-m telescope of Lick Observatory. An improved X-ray error box obtained with Copernicus strongly supports this proposed identification. The candidate displays all the characteristics of the symbiotic stars and the related recurrent novae. The spectrum reveals the presence of an M star together with a blue component and a large number of emission lines displaying a wide range of ionization. There is evidence of variability of both the continuum and the line intensities. This object provides strong support for the often proposed association of some X-ray sources with nova-like systems.

    Description: An observation of Cygnus X-3 was made with soft X-ray detectors launched on an Aerobee rocket. The iron line emission observed one month later and in May 1975 was not found. A 3 sigma upper limit for this feature is 0.006 ph/2 cm/s.

    Description: The expected intensities of various possible components of the far ultraviolet background are discussed. It is concluded that existing results do not place interesting constraints on the density of the intergalactic medium (IGM). Current techniques and instrumentation for far ultraviolet astronomy are, however, sufficient to achieve vastly improved limits. New observations are required to determine whether the IGM can be detected in the far ultraviolet or whether the extragalactic component of the background is masked by radiation with a more local origin.

    Description: Sciama's hypothesis that the dark matter associated with galaxies, galaxy clusters, and the intergalactic medium consists of tau neutrinos of rest mass 28-30 eV whose decay generates ultraviolet photons of energy roughly 14-15 eV, has been tested using the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope flows aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia. A straightforward application of Sciama's model predicts that a spectral line from neutrino decay photons should be observed from the rich galaxy cluster Abell 665 with an SNR of about 30. No such emission was detected. For neutrinos in the mass range 27.2-32.1 eV, the observations set a lower lifetime limit significantly greater than Sciama's model requires.

    Description: We consider two possibilities which can change the spectral shape of the Lyman-limit region in the radiation emitted by the accretion disks of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) and quasars. One is the effect produced by the strong gravitational field of the black hole, and the other is Comptonization of the emitted disk spectrum by a surrounding hot corona. We present synthesized spectra in the region of the Lyman limit for optically thick, geometrically thin accretion disk models incorporating the above two effects.

    Description: The Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope (HUT) is a general purpose moderate resolution spectrograph which is now being constructed for launch on the Space Shuttle. The instrument contains a Rowland spectrograph, which is located at the prime focus of a 0.9-m f/2 parabola. A description is given of the progress which has been made in the development of a flight detector for HUT. The detector developed is an intensified photodiode array. The image intensifier part of the detector contains two 25-mm 80:1, 12-micron pore microchannel plates (PCPs). A thin layer of CsI deposited on the front surface of the first microchannel plate has the objective to increase the quantum efficiency of the detector below 1850 A. The detector system utilizes a spectrometer processor (SP) which is based upon a bit-sliced microprocessor. The current status of the HUT detector system is discussed, and aspects of performance are evaluated. It is felt that the developed system will meet or exceed the design requirements.

    Description: The Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope (HUT), flown aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia in the Astro-1 mission, provided the first spectrophotometry in the sub Kyman alpha region for many astronomical sources. Observations of 77 sources were made throughout the far ultraviolet (912 to 1850 A, delta lambda approximately 3 A), and for a few objects in the extreme ultraviolet (415 to 912 A, delta lambda approximately 1.5 A). Among the objects observed were quasars, galaxy clusters, active and normal galaxies, cataclysmic variables, globular clusters, supernova remnants, planetary nebulae, and white dwarfs.
