    Description: Cyanobacteria-dominated biofilms in a CO2-degassing karst-water creek (Westerhöfer Bach, Germany) were investigated with regard to the effects of microbial activity on CaCO3 precipitation, water chemistry of micro- and macroenvironments, stable isotopic records, and tufa fabric formation. Ex situ microelectrode measurements of pH, O2, Ca2+ and CO32− revealed that annually laminated calcified biofilms composed mainly of filamentous cyanobacteria (tufa stromatolites) strongly induced CaCO3 precipitation by photosynthesis under illumination, but inhibited precipitation by respiration in the dark. In contrast, endolithic cyanobacterial biofilms and mosses did not cause photosynthesis-induced precipitation under experimental conditions. No spontaneous precipitation occurred on bare limestone substrates, despite high calcite supersaturation of the ambient water. Mass balance calculations suggest that biofilm photosynthesis was responsible for 10–20% of Ca2+ loss in the creek, while the remaining Ca2+ loss derived from physicochemical precipitation on branches, leaves and as fine-grained calcite particles. Neither analysis of bulk water chemistry nor oxygen nor carbon stable isotopic records of the tufa stromatolites confirmed photosynthetic effects, despite the evident photosynthesis-induced calcite precipitation. Oxygen stable isotopic values reflected seasonal changes in water temperature, and carbon stable isotope values probably recorded carbon isotopic composition of dissolved inorganic carbon in the creek water. Annual lamination and fabric formation of the tufa stromatolites is suggested to vary with photosynthesis-induced calcite precipitation rates that are affected by temperature dependency of diffusion coefficients. Photosynthesis-induced precipitation resulted in encrusted cyanobacterial sheaths, reflecting syntaxial overgrowth of microcrystalline cyanobacterial tubes by microspar, instead of microcrystalline sheath impregnation, which was previously suggested as an indicator of photosynthesis-induced precipitation. Therefore, sheath impregnation or encrustation by CaCO3 cannot be used to distinguish photosynthesis-induced from physicochemically-induced CaCO3 precipitation.

    Description: The Nördlinger Ries is a circular, flat depression of 22-24 km diameter separating the Jurassic limestone plateaus of the Franconian and Swabian Alb in Southwest-Germany. Its centre is located 110 km NW of Munich, 70 km SSW of Nuremberg and 110 km E of Stuttgart. The Ries basin was formed approximately 15 Million years ago (Gentner & Wagner, 1969; Staudacher et al., 1982) by an impact of a stony meteorite less than 1 km in size (Shoemaker & Chao, 1961; Stöffler, 1977). The Ries crater represents one of the best preserved and best investigated impact structures on Earth (Bayerisches Geologisches Landesamt 1969, 1974, 1977; Hüttner & Schmidt-Kaler 1999; Stöffler & Ostertag 1983). It gained wide public attention (e.g., Metz 1974, Steinert 1974, Lemcke 1981, Kavasch 1985, Pösges & Schieber 1994; Schieber 2004) and served as training site for Apollo 17 astronauts in August 1970 (e.g., Margolin 2000). However, apart from its impact nature, the Ries basin offers a great opportunity to study fossil lacustrine microbialites. Such lacustrine deposits within impact structures are of increasing interest for understanding the origin and evolution of early life on Earth, and possibly other planets (Cockell & Lee 2002, Osinski et al. 2005, Cabrol et al. 2001). Therefore, the focus on this field trip is on microbial and algal build-ups, their facies context, and the discussion of microbial effects and lake water chemistry.

    Description: Widefield deconvolution epifluorescence microscopy (WDEM) combined with fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) was performed to identify and characterize single bacterial cells within sections of the mediterranean sponge Chondrosia reniformis. Sponges were embedded in paraffin wax or plastic prior to the preparation of thin sections, in situ hybridization and microscopy. Serial digital images generated by widefield epifluorescence microscopy were visualized using an exhaustive photon reassignment deconvolution algorithm and three-dimensional rendering software. Computer processing of series of images taken at different focal planes with the deconvolution technique provided deblurred three-dimensional images with high optical resolution on a submicron scale. Results from the deconvolution enhanced widefield microscopy were compared with conventional epifluorescent microscopical images. By the application of the deconvolution algorithm on digital image data obtained with widefield epifluorescence microscopy after FISH, the occurrence and spatial arrangement of Desulfovibrionaceae closely associated with micropores of Chondrosia reniformis could be visualized.

    Description: Die Exkursion stellt repräsentative Aufschlüsse triassischer und jurassischer Sedimente aus der direkten Umgebung von Göttingen vor. Dabei werden deren stratigraphische Stellung, Ablagerungsmilieus und Fossilgemeinschaften diskutiert. Zunächst werden Aufschlüsse auf der östlichen Schulter des Leinetalgrabens (Muschelkalk- Plateau des Göttinger Waldes), danach auch im Leinetalgraben selbst (Keuper, Schwarzjura) besucht. Hinreichend gute Aufschlußbedingungen sind vor allem in Tongruben (Röt, Mittlerer Keuper, Schwarzjura) und Steinbrüchen (Unterer Muschelkalk) gegeben.

    Description: This field trip is devoted to the post-impact history of the Nördlinger Ries with focus on its carbonate lake sediments. We will explore major facies belts of the Ries crater lake, including basinal shales, littoral carbonate grainstones, dolomitic algal bioherms, sublacustrine spring mounds, carbonate floodplains, deltaic deposits and late freshwater limestones. Special emphasis is taken on fossil algae (green algae, charophytes, cyanobacteria), rhythms and cycles of bioherm growth, the genesis of microbialites in relation to climate and lake water chemistry, and paleosol formation in carbonate swamps.
