    Description: The synthesis of resins with terminal acetylene groups has provided a promising technology to yield high performance structural materials. Because these resins cure through an addition reaction, no volatile by-products are produced during the processing. The cured products have high thermal stability and good properties retention after exposure to humidity. Resins with a wide variety of different chemical structures between the terminal acetylene groups are synthesized and their mechanical properties studied. The ability of the acetylene cured polymers to give good mechanical properties is demonstrated by the resins with quinoxaline structures. Processibility of these resins can be manipulated by varying the chain length between the acetylene groups or by blending in different amounts of reactive deluents. Processing conditions similar to the state-of-the-art epoxy can be attained by using backbone structures like ether-sulfone or bis-phenol-A. The wide range of mechanical properties and processing conditions attainable by this class of resins should allow them to be used in a wide variety of applications.

    Description: After a hydrogen fuel bleed valve problem on the Discovery Space Shuttle was traced to the strong magnetization of Inconel 718 in the armature of the linear variable differential transformer near liquid hydrogen temperatures, the ac magnetic susceptibility of three samples of Inconel 718 of slightly different compositions, one sample of Inconel 625, and on sample of Inconel 600 were measured as a function of temperature. Inconel 718 alloys are found to exhibit a spin glass state below 16 K. Inconel 600 exhibits three different magnetic phases, the lowest-temperature state (below 6 K) being somewhat similar to that of Inconel 718. The magnetic states of the Inconel alloys and their magnetic susceptibilities appear to be strongly dependent on the exact composition of the alloy.

    Description: Major process steps of a dichlorosilane based chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process for the production of polycrystalline silicon have been evaluated. While an economic analysis of the process indicates that it is not capable of meeting JPL/DOE price objectives ($14.00/kg in 1980 dollars), product price in the $19.00/kg to $25.00/kg range may be achieved. Product quality has been evaluated and ascertained to be comparable to semiconductor-grade polycrystalline silicon. Solar cells fabricated from the material are also equivalent to those fabricated from semiconductor-grade polycrystalline silicon.

    Description: The computing system design of IPAD is described and the requirements which form the basis for the system design are discussed. The system is presented in terms of a functional design description and technical design specifications. The functional design specifications give the detailed description of the system design using top-down structured programming methodology. Human behavioral characteristics, which specify the system design at the user interface, security considerations, and standards for system design, implementation, and maintenance are also part of the technical design specifications. Detailed specifications of the two most common computing system types in use by the major aerospace companies which could support the IPAD system design are presented. The report of a study to investigate migration of IPAD software between the two candidate 3rd generation host computing systems and from these systems to a 4th generation system is included.

    Description: An investigation has been conducted on the effects of a dc bias field applied to Gd(1-x)Co(x) thin films during RF sputter deposition. Such films may possess uniaxial magnetic anisotropy with easy axis perpendicular to the plane of the film and may be used in magnetic bubble devices. Uniformity in composition, thickness and magnetic properties has been achieved and film composition has been controlled to within one percent. However, significant variations of magnetic properties were observed from film to film.

The microgripper serves effectively as a one degree-of-freedom prototype of a minimum surface effect micromanipulator design. Data is presented that characterizes the microgripper performance under both pure position and pure force control, followed by a discussion of the attributes and limitations of flexure-based design. The microgripper is interfaced with a force reflective macrogripper, and the pair is controlled with a hybrid position/force scheme. Data is presented that illustrates the effective operation of the telerobotic pair.

    Description: A piezoelectric (PZT) stack-based actuator was developed to provide a means of actuation with dynamic characteristics appropriate for small-scale manipulation. In particular, the design incorporates a highly nonlinear, large-ratio transmission that provides approximately two orders of magnitude motion amplification from the PZT stack. In addition to motion amplification, the nonlinear transmission was designed via optimization methods to distort the highly non-uniform properties of a piezoelectric actuator so that the achievable actuation force is nearly constant throughout the actuator workspace. The package also includes sensors that independently measure actuator output force and displacement, so that a manipulator structure need not incorporate sensors nor the associated wires. Specifically, the actuator was designed to output a maximum force of at least one Newton through a stroke of at least one millimeter. For purposes of small-scale precision position and/or force control, the actuator/sensor package was designed to eliminate stick-slip friction and backlash. The overall dimensions of the actuator/sensor package are approximately 40 x 65 x 25 mm.
