    Description: This paper presents the results obtained in a continuing investigation of fault-tolerant computing which is being conducted at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Initial studies led to the decision to design and construct an experimental computer with dynamic (standby) redundancy, including replaceable subsystems and a program rollback provision to eliminate transient errors. This system, called the STAR computer, began operation in 1969. The following aspects of the STAR system are described: architecture, reliability analysis, software, automatic maintenance of peripheral systems, and adaptation to serve as the central computer of an outer-planet exploration spacecraft.

    Description: A biomathematical analysis of component interaction in biological systems is given. Two primary types of systems are discussed - open systems and closed systems. The applicability of these systems to life support equipment in spacecraft is analyzed and formulae are provided to demonstrate the effect (theoretical) of closed and open systems in life support systems.

    Description: The identification of feasible and practical applications of space teleoperator technology for the problems of the handicapped were studied. A teleoperator system is defined by NASA as a remotely controlled, cybernetic, man-machine system designed to extend and augment man's sensory, manipulative, and locomotive capabilities. Based on a consideration of teleoperator systems, the scope of the study was limited to an investigation of these handicapped persons limited in sensory, manipulative, and locomotive capabilities. If the technology being developed for teleoperators has any direct application, it must be in these functional areas. Feasible and practical applications of teleoperator technology for the problems of the handicapped are described, and design criteria are presented with each application. A development plan is established to bring the application to the point of use.

    Description: Preliminary studies for pogo prevention on the shuttle vehicle are reported. The importance of the effect of oscillatory outflow from a hydroelastic tank is displayed in terms of excitation of normal modes for a structure containing that tank assuming its outlet is closed. Evaluation of an approximate propulsion frequency response at undamped feedline resonance reveals the conditions for which the contribution of tank outflow is destabilizing and also provides a criterion for identifying those structural modes which are of potential significance for system stability. Various finite-element and normal-mode models for hydraulic feedlines are evaluated relative to accuracy of admittances of a long line. A procedure is recommended for modeling a feed system to minimize the required number of second-order equations. Specific recommendations are made for the analytical estimation of pump cavitation compliance and a first estimate for the shuttle pumps is given. Weakness in past practices of pump testing are identified and a new three-phase program is proposed. Finally results of numerical studies on the early vehicle configuration are presented. It is concluded that an accumulator between the boost and main pump offers promise of higher effectiveness than one at the engine inlet.

    Description: The use of active pogo suppressors on the space shuttle was qualitatively investigated. Suppressor design concepts and the effectiveness of these designs in maintaining the stability of the shuttle vehicle were the primary concerns. Suppressor design concepts were developed by means of a series of parametric stability analyses. These two designs together with two designs provided by NASA were evaluated in detail for control effectiveness, performance relative to a passive suppression device, sensitivity of performance to feedback error, suppressor volume flow requirements, and suppressor development requirements. An active device at the high pressure oxidizer pump inlet was shown to provide a simple and effective design that is insensitive to error in the feedback signal. The sizing of an active suppressor was demonstrated to be dependent upon knowledge of the dynamic characteristics of the system.
