Description: The development of turbine blade analysis tools as they moved from research contracts under the NASA HOST (Hot Section Technology) program to a PC-based system for preliminary design and to use in evaluating the SSME HPFTP (Space Shuttle Main Engine High Pressure Fuel Turbo Pump) blade is discussed. The heat transfer and structural analysis of the blade, the development of a data base for constitutive modeling of the blade materials, including coatings, and the use of advanced nonlinear finite element methods are addressed.

Description: Accomplishments are described for the 2-year program, to develop advanced 3-D inelastic structural stress analysis methods and solution strategies for more accurate and cost effective analysis of combustors, turbine blades and vanes. The approach was to develop a matrix of formulation elements and constitutive models. Three constitutive models were developed in conjunction with optimized iterating techniques, accelerators, and convergence criteria within a framework of dynamic time incrementing. Three formulations models were developed; an eight-noded mid-surface shell element, a nine-noded mid-surface shell element and a twenty-noded isoparametric solid element. A separate computer program was developed for each combination of constitutive model-formulation model. Each program provides a functional stand alone capability for performing cyclic nonlinear structural analysis. In addition, the analysis capabilities incorporated into each program can be abstracted in subroutine form for incorporation into other codes or to form new combinations.

Description: An attempt is made to relate the circulation features of the South Pacific Convergence Zone (SPCZ) to those of the Southern Hemisphere (SH) for the whole area and for three subsections. It is established that during the period of Jan. 10-24, 1979, when the SPCZ was convectively active, it played a significant role in the baroclinic energy conversion (CE) within the tropical SH. When the SPCZ dissipated the CE did likewise. A zonal wavenumber analysis shows that wavenumber four was dominant in the CE process in the SH topics when the SPCZ was active, but that it did not dominate when the SPCZ dissipated. It is shown that the most intense convective activity in the tropics occurred in the SPCZ and that its location corresponded favorably to maximum values of CE greater than zero.

Description: The objective is to develop analytical tools capable of economically evaluating the cyclic time dependent plasticity which occurs in hot section engine components in areas of strain concentration resulting from the combination of both mechanical and thermal stresses. Three models were developed. A simple model performs time dependent inelastic analysis using the power law creep equation. The second model is the classical model of Professors Walter Haisler and David Allen of Texas A and M University. The third model is the unified model of Bodner, Partom, et al. All models were customized for linear variation of loads and temperatures with all material properties and constitutive models being temperature dependent.

Description: This paper describes the High-Resolution Interferometer Sounder (HIS), which is the first of a new generation of passive remote sensors for achieving high vertical resolution sounding information, with special attention given to the sounding retrieval procedure. Examples of mesoscale temperature and moisture profiles obtained with airborne HIS during field programs held in 1986 are presented. A spacecraft version of the instrument, to be used in advanced global weather analysis and forecasting, is under development.

Description: The AiResearch Casting Company baseline silicon nitride (92 percent GTE SN-502 Si sub 3 N sub 4 plus 6 percent Y sub 2 O sub 3 plus 2 percent Al sub 2 O sub 3) was characterized with methods that included chemical analysis, oxygen content determination, electrophoresis, particle size distribution analysis, surface area determination, and analysis of the degree of agglomeration and maximum particle size of elutriated powder. Test bars were injection molded and processed through sintering at 0.68 MPa (100 psi) of nitrogen. The as-sintered test bars were evaluated by X-ray phase analysis, room and elevated temperature modulus of rupture strength, Weibull modulus, stress rupture, strength after oxidation, fracture origins, microstructure, and density from quantities of samples sufficiently large to generate statistically valid results. A series of small test matrices were conducted to study the effects and interactions of processing parameters which included raw materials, binder systems, binder removal cycles, injection molding temperatures, particle size distribution, sintering additives, and sintering cycle parameters.

Description: A set of FGGE Level III-b analyses produced at the NASA Goddard Laboratory for Atmospheres (GLA) is used to examine changes that occur in the global-scale circulation features during the period, January 10 - February 13,1979. In the first two weeks of this period, the South Pacific Convergence Zone (SPCZ) and its convective cloud band were observed to be dominant features of the circulation. Subsequent to January 24, there were marked changes in the global-scale circulation, particularly in the Southern Hemisphere tropics. Concomitant with these changes was the disappearance of the SPCZ and its cloud band. The primary purpose of this study is to compare some general circulation parameters, which frequently correspond to deep convection, for two 15-day periods: January 10-24, when the SPCZ was very convectively active, and January 28 - February 11 when it was inactive. Daily variations of some parameters are also shown. It is seen that distinct changes occur in each parameter by the end of the first period, particularly in the vicinity of the SPCZ. Suggestions are offered regarding mechanisms which might be responsible for the observed changes.
