    Notes: The paper examines fourteen post war innovations; five in the flour milling industry, four in the malting industry, and five in the dairy industry. The major work has been carried out in the flour milling industry, with supportive studies in the malting and dairy industries. Examination is made of the characteristics of the innovations as perceived by technical managers who are in a position to influence adoption or non-adoption. The research sets out to study the relationship between the perceived characteristics of the innovations and their diffusion times. It is hoped that the results will be of value to engineering designers and marketing managers in the capital equipment manufacturing industries by enabling them to develop a clearer understanding of adoptors and non-adoptors of innovations and also to study the inter-relationships between different sectors of the industries which they serve. Two forms of profiles of the characteristics of innovations are presented.

    Notes: The thermomechanical response of a uniaxial bar with thermoviscoplastic constitution is predicted herein using the finite element method. After a brief review of the governing field equations, variational principles are constructed for the one-dimensional conservation of momentum and energy equations. These equations are coupled in that the temperature field affects the displacements and vice versa. Due to the differing physical nature of the temperature and displacements, first-order and second-order elements are utilized for these variables, respectively. The resulting semi-discretized equations are then discretized in time using finite differencing. This is accomplished by Euler's method, which is utilized due to the stiff nature of the constitutive equations. The model is utilized in conjunction with stress-strain relations developed by Bodner and Partom to predict the axial temperature field in a bar subjected to cyclic mechanical end displacements and temperature boundary conditions. It is found that spacial and time variation of the temperature field is significantly affected by the boundary conditions. The nomenclature used is given in an Appendix.

    Notes: This paper is concerned with the development of a numerical algorithm for the solution of the uncoupled, quasistatic initial/boundary value problem involving orthotropic linear viscoelastic media undergoing thermal and/or mechanical deformation. The constitutive equations, expressed in integral form involving the relaxation moduli, are transformed into an incremental algebraic form prior to development of the finite element formulation. This incrementalization is accomplished in closed form and results in a recursive relationship which leads to the need of solving a simple set of linear algebraic equations only for the extraction of the finite element solution. Use is made of a Dirichlet-Prony series representation of the relaxation moduli in order to derive the recursive relationship and thereby eliminate the storage problem that arises when dealing with materials possessing memory. Three illustrative example problems are included to demonstrate the method. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: Abstract The development of damage in cross-ply Hercules AS4/3502 graphite/epoxy laminates has been investigated. Specific endeavors were to identify the mechanisms for initiation and growth of matrix cracks and to determine the effect of matrix cracking on the stiffness loss in cross-ply laminates. Two types of matrix cracks were identified. These include both straight and curved cracks. The experimental study of matrix crack damage revealed that the curved cracks formed after the straight cracks and followed a repeatable pattern of location and orientation relative to the straight cracks. Therefore, it was postulated that the growth mechanism for curved cracks is driven by the stress state resulting from the formation of the straight cracks. This phenomenon was analytically investigated by a finite-element model of straight cracks in a cross-ply laminate. The finite-element results provide supporting evidence for the postulated growth mechanism. The experimental study also revealed that the number of curved cracks increased with the number of consecutive 90-deg plies. Finally, experimental results show as much as 10-percent degradation in axial stiffness due to matrix cracking in cross-ply graphite/epoxy laminates.

    Description: The present study proposes a mathematical model utilizing the internal state variable concept for predicting the upper bounds of the reduced axial and shear stiffnesses in cross-ply laminates with matrix cracks. The displacement components at the matrix crack surfaces are explicitly expressed in terms of the observable axial and shear strains and the undamaged material properties. The reduced axial and shear stiffnesses are predicted for glass/epoxy and graphite/epoxy laminates. Comparison of the model with other theoretical and experimental studies is also presented to confirm direct applicability of the model to angle-ply laminates with matrix cracks subjected to general in-plane loading.

    Description: The objective of this experiment is to assess the effects of long-term exposure of candidate balloon films, tapes, and lines to the hostile environment above the Earth's atmosphere. Degradation of mechanical and radiometric properties will be observed by a series of tests on exposed materials. The experiment is passive and will test candidate balloon films, tapes, and lines. The experiment will occupy one-third of a 3-in.-deep peripheral tray. Two additional identical sets of material will be prepared. The first set will be tested immediately and the second will be held in a controlled environment until the recovery of the samples placed on orbit. Tests will then be performed on this second set to determine any effects of aging. The specimens that are recovered from the Long Duration Exposure Facility will also be tested and the effects of long-duration exposure noted. In addition to these specimens, another set of specimens will be exposed at an accelerated exposure facility and the results will be compared with those of specimens exposed in situ.

A crack parameter representing the effect of matrix cracks on the observable axial Young's modulus is calculated for glass/epoxy and graphite/epoxy material systems. The results show that the matrix crack opening displacement and the effective Young's modulus depend not on the crack length, but on its ratio to the crack spacing.
