Notes: Abstract  Roots of 40 taxa of higher plants (Pteridophyta, Spermatophyta) from two alpine study sites in Denali National Park and Preserve in central Alaska were examined for their mycorrhizal colonization. We observed ectomycorrhizae on six species: Betula nana, Salix reticulata, Salix polaris, Salix arctica, Polygonum viviparum, and Dryas octopetala. Seven taxa, Cassiope tetragona, Empetrum nigrum, Ledum palustre subsp. decumbens, Ledum palustre subsp. groenlandicum, Loiseleuria procumbens, Vaccinium uliginosum and Vaccinium vitis–idaea (all Ericales), had ericoid mycorrhizae. One species, Arctostaphylos alpina, formed a typical arbutoid mycorrhiza. Two species (Sibbaldia procumbens and Aconitum delphinifolium) showed well-developed VA mycorrhizae, whereas three species of plants (Lycopodium clavatum, Silene acaulis and Oxytropis scammaniana) had vesicles, but no arbuscules. The roots of 11 other plants (Lycopodium clavatum, Lycopodium selago, Silene acaulis, Gentiana algida, Lupinus arcticus, Oxytropis scammaniana, Pedicularis langsdorffii, Pedicularis capitata, Pedicularis verticillata, Artemisia sp. and Carex bigelowii) had a variety of intracellular colonizations which are referred to as dark septate fungi. No mycorrhizae were found on 12 other plants: Equisetum arvense, Equisetum variegatum, Lycopodium alpinum, Polygonum bistorta, Saxifraga hieracifolia, Saxifraga hirculus, Astragalus alpinus, Pedicularis kanei, Petasites frigidus, Carex podocarpa, Carex microchaeta and Poa arctica. A possible ecological role of dark septate fungi is discussed.

Notes: Abstract The development of one-dimensional Turing patterns characteristic of the chlorite-iodide-malonic acid/starch reaction as well as analogous Brussellator/immobilizer and Schnackenberg/immobilizer model systems is investigated by means of a weakly nonlinear stability analysis applied to the appropriately scaled governing equations. Then the theoretical predictions deduced from these pattern formation studies are compared with experimental evidence relevant to the Turing diffusive instabilities under examination in order to explain more fully the transition to such stationary symmetry-breaking spatial structures when the temperature or pool species concentrations vary.

Notes: : Conditions under which a given topological space does, or does not, possess a stronger maximal feebly compact topology are given. Procedures are developed which can be used, for certain feebly compact spaces, to obtain stronger maximal feebly compact spaces. Several examples are constructed.

Notes: Subpicosecond lasers measured the appearance rate of OH X(v=0) following 267 nm photolysis of the CH4⋅O3 van der Waals complex. The rise of the OH A←OH X laser-induced fluorescence with respect to the photolysis/probe delay time, tD, was LIF(tD)=1−exp(−tD/τ) with τ approximately 3 ps, indicating that the reaction CH4+O(1D2)→CH3+OH involves a CH3OH* intermediate with that lifetime. No prompt OH(v=0) from a direct or fast reaction was observed. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A scanning tunneling microscope in ultrahigh vacuum has been used to investigate the growth, morphology, and surface atomic structure of ultrathin titanium silicide films on Si(111) substrates. Microstructural considerations have been used to identify various stages of the silicide growth. Atomic resolution images of a titanium silicide crystallite facet, formed at 850 °C, have been identified as a 2×2 silicon termination of a C54-TiSi2(010) surface. Possible epitaxial silicide/silicon relationships are provided. Theoretical consideration has been given to the interatomic bonding in the C54-TiSi2 lattice and the dangling bond density of ideally terminated silicide planes has been calculated. The highly reconstructed atomically flat surface of a large crystallite, formed at 1200 °C, has been assigned as a C54-TiSi2(311) plane giving the epitaxial relation C54-TiSi2(311)(parallel)Si(111). The presence of pairs and linear chains of defects, with common orientations, is attributed to the decomposition of a diatomic gas on the facet, producing sites of preferential adsorption on the silicide surface. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Many interesting inverse problems in geophysics are non-linear and multimodal. Parametrization of these problems leads to an objective function, or measure of agreement between data and model predictions, that has a complex topography with many local minima. Optimization algorithms that rely on local gradients in the objective function or that search the model space locally may become trapped in these local minima. By combining simulated annealing with the downhill simplex method, a hybrid global search algorithm is presented in this paper for non-linear, multimodal, inverse problems. The hybrid algorithm shares the advantages of both local search methods that perform well if the local model is suitable, and global methods that are able to explore efficiently the full model space. The hybrid algorithm also utilizes a larger and more complex memory to store information on the objective function than simulated annealing algorithms. The effectiveness of this new scheme is evaluated in three problems: minimization of the multidimensional Rosenbrock function, non-linear, 1-D, acoustic waveform inversion, and residual statics. The performance of the hybrid algorithm is compared with simulated annealing and genetic algorithms and is shown to converge more rapidly and to have a higher success rate of locating the global minimum for the cases investigated.

Notes: Laboratory studies have shown that the amounts of glutathione (GSH) and cysteine are higher in grass species that are moderately tolerant, such as wheat (Triticum aestivum L., cv. Fredrick), and moderately susceptible, such as barley (Hor deum vitlgare L., cv. Legér) and triticale (cv. OAC Trillium), to fenoxaprop-ethyl (FE) than in species that are very susceptible to the her bicide, such as oat (Avena saliva L., cv. OAC Woodstock), wild oat (Avena fatua L.), yellow foxtail (Setaria glanca (L.) Bcauv.), large crab grass (Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scop.) and bar nyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) P.B.). The safener, fenchlorazole-ethyl (FCE) was found to increase and decrease, respectively, the amounts of GSH and cysteine in the moderately tolerant and moderately susceptible species but had no effect on the susceptible species. It is sug gested that in the moderately tolerant and moderately susceptible species, especially following FCE treatment, more GSH is available to detoxify the herbicide. Glutathione-S-tranferase activity (GST) for FE was found to be very low in all of the species tested. In vitro experiments at physio-logical pH. demonstrated that FE may conjugate with GSH nonenzymatically. Therefore, it is suggested that nonenzymatic conjugation of fenoxaprop-ethyl with glutathione may be an important mechanism for tolerance of some grasses to this herbicide.
