Beschreibung: Very long base interferometry measurements of time delay and fringe frequency at 2.29 GHz on baselines of 10,000 km between Deep Space Network stations were used to determine the positions of the milliarcsecond nuclei in 207 extragalactic radio sources. Estimated accuracies generally range from approximately 0.1 to approximately 1.0, in both right ascension and declination, with all sources having uncertainties 4" in both coordinates. The observed sources are part of an all-sky VLBI catalog of milliarcsecond radio sources. Arcsecond positions are now determined for 752 of these sources. Arcsecond positions serve as a useful starting point in the construction of high-precision VLBI reference frames and are also important for unambiguous determination of optical counterparts to compact radio sources.

Beschreibung: NGC 7027 was observed with a multichannel grating spectrometer from 5.2 to 7.5 microns at a spectral resolving power of 120-200. Two new dust emission features are resolved at 5.62 and 6.95 microns, and for the first time the Ni II fine-structure line at 6.64 microns is detected. It is shown that a single molecular dust constituent might account for six of the nine observed dust features between 2 and 14 microns. The strength of the Ni II line indicates either that Ni is not depleted in the neutral gas, or that the line is formed at high density.

Beschreibung: Searches were made for pulsed high energy (E greater than 35 MeV) gamma radiation from 43 pulsars using the SAS-2 data base and radio parameters. No positive results were found, and the upper limits are consistent with the concept that gamma ray production efficiency increases with increasing apparent age. Two limits suggest that efficiency cannot be a simple function of apparent age beyond 1,000,000 years. Previously announced in STAR as N83-24463

Beschreibung: The infrared spectrum of the Kleinmann-Low nebula in M42 has been measured from 80 to 350 kaysers (approximately 29 to 125 microns) with a Michelson interferometer aboard the NASA Kuiper Airborne Observatory. The frequency spectrum peaks at about 185 kaysers. A simple model of the emission implies that the temperature is in the range 70-95 K and that the optical depth is at least 0.2 at the peak frequency. A possible absorption is seen at about 176 kaysers. Thermal emission by dust at a temperature of 71 K, with the absorption cross section proportional to frequency, provides a good fit to the data. Other thermal-emission models can also fit the spectrum. The data are compared with previous broad-band measurements. Upper limits are placed on expected line emission from the surrounding H II region at the position of the nebula.

Beschreibung: Accretion models of planet formation and the early cratering history of the solar system suggest that planet formation is accompanied by a cloud of debris resulting from accumulation and fragmentation. A rough estimate of the infrared luminosities of debris clouds is presented for comparison with measured 10-micron luminosities of young stars. New measurements of 13 F, G, and K main-sequence stars of the Ursa Major Stream, which is thought to be about 270-million years old, place constraints on the amount of debris which could be present near these stars.

Beschreibung: The technical properties, operation, and expected sensitivity are discussed for an experiment intended to search for narrow lines in the spectra of gamma ray bursts during the ISEE-C mission. At the heart of the experiment is a radiatively cooled germanium solid state photon detector. The instrumentation is capable of storing the entire spectrum of all but the largest bursts in the energy range 0.05-6.5 MeV. In addition, it analyzes the signals from two CsI detectors in two other experiments on the spacecraft and records event time histories from these to a few millisecond accuracy. A background mode permits spectral analysis during quiet times and will allow the determination of physically interesting upper limits for narrow lines in the diffuse gamma ray background radiation.

Beschreibung: Measurements of the gamma-ray emission in the medium-energy range between 15 and 100 MeV, obtained during two balloon flights from Brazil, are presented. The importance of this energy region in determining whether neutral-pion decay or electron bremsstrahlung is the most likely dominant source mechanism is discussed, along with the implications of such observations. Specifically, the data from this experiment suggest that emission from the galactic plane is similar to the theoretical spectrum calculated by Fichtel et al. (1976), including both source mechanisms but with the bremsstrahlung component enhanced by a factor of about 2. A spectral distribution of gamma-rays produced in the residual atmosphere above the instrument is also presented and compared with other data. A rather smooth spectral variation from high to low energies is found for the atmospheric spectrum.

Beschreibung: Measurements of forbidden line Ar II 6.99 micron and Pf alpha 7.45 micron made from the Kuiper Airborne Observatory are presented for Sgr A, the H II region at the center of the Galaxy. These line strengths, when combined with ground-based measurements, suggest a factor of enhancement of two in the Ar/H ratio in the galactic center region relative to that in the sun and in the solar neighborhood. The accuracy of the determination is presently limited by the uncertainty in the collision strength for Ar(+).

Beschreibung: Infrared spectrophotometry of the R-type carbon star HD 19557 is presented. Two unusual spectroscopic features are seen: a 3.1 micron band is lacking and a 2.8 micron band is present. Identifications are proposed for three previously unreported stellar absorption bands with electronic sequences of C2, CN, and C2H. The latter is proposed to be responsible for the 2.8 micron feature. The atmospheric structure of the star is studied with synthetic spectra, and an effective temperature between 2600 K and 3000 K is suggested. No SiC emission is seen at 11.3 microns, indicating that grain formation is not a viable process around the star. The lack of dust in R stars may suggest a salient difference between R and N types.
