    Notes: Velocity distributions, pressure gradients, and overall pressure drops are presented. A definite concavity was found in the velocity profile near the entrance for case I. In case II, which is more realistic physically, very definite effects are transmitted upstream, and the velocity distributions downstream show little concavity.

    Notes: Catalytic decomposition of nitric oxide at a concentration of 0.404 and 0.432% by volume in nitrogen was studied in a tubular flow reactor. The packing consisted of alumina pellets impregnated with 0.1% by weight of platinum oxide and 3.0% by weight of nickel oxide. Tests were conducted at pressures of 1 to 15 atm. and temperatures from 800° to 1,000°F. A rate equation correlating the data as a function of temperature, pressure, and compositions was developed. A reaction mechanism compatible with the rate equation is proposed.

    Notes: An experimental study has been carried out to prepare and characterize high density polyethylene-based composites filled with exfoliated graphite particles of varied aspect ratios. It has been demonstrated that the dielectric constant of the composite correlates with the in situ volumetric fraction of the compressible exfoliated filler particles. The dielectric constant has been found to range from 2.23 to 125. The minimum electrical resistivity of the composites obtained was 0.1 Ω.cm at a graphite content of 40 percent by volume. The use of these composites is intended in electromagnetic radiation interference (EMI) shielding.

    Notes: Poly(ethylene 2,6, naphthalene dicarboxilate), PEN, is very similar to poly(ethylene terephthalate), PET, in its chemical structure and was, therefore, expected to exhibit similar processing characteristics. We, however, observed a few problems during stretching of PEN, the most important of which was necking behavior at 145°C, which is between Tg (117°C) and Tcc (195°C). This is usually observed in PET only when it is stretched close to or below Tg. At temperatures between Tg and Tcc (cold crystallization temperature) PET stretches rather uniformly. The temperature window for film stretching appears to be rather wide, but our results indicate that this is not the case. Films stretched to high stretch ratios become uniform due to propagation and final disappearance of necks as a result of stress hardening. Our attempts at stretching these films at higher temperatures indicated that necking is eliminated, but so is stress induced crystallization, which causes stress hardening (unless high stretching rates are employed). The presence of stress hardening is essential for obtaining high quality, uniform films of these polymers. In addition, at high temperatures thermally activated crystallization which starts dominating the structure development, detrimentally affects the general appearance of the films. In brief, the PEN films we investigated have a narrower processing window than was anticipated based on their thermal behavior alone. At elevated temperatures the films are sensitive to the rate of stretching even more than typical PET processed at comparable conditions. The uniformity of the films depends on the stretch ratio, stretching mode, ratio(s) and rates and temperature. WAXS studies on the films indicate that the macromolecules packed into the low temperature crystal modification. In addition, WAXS pole figure studies suggest that naphthalene planes preferentially orient parallel to the film surface during biaxial stretching. The biaxially stretched films were observed to exhibit a bimodal chain orientation as evidenced by pole figure analysis of the (010) planes.

    Notes: The heat capacities of isotactic polypropylene and its composite with glass fiber have been measured at high pressure, up to 7 MPa, in the melt state by high pressure differential scanning calorimetry (HPDSC). The values also have been calculated from the data of specific volume (V) measured by dilatometry and thermal conductivity (κ) and thermal diffusivity (α) measured by a compensating hot wire method. The values of the heat capacity measured from HPDSC are consistent with those from the calculation method. The heat capacities of molten polypropylene and its composite increase linearly with temperature at a constant pressure and decrease with pressure at a constant temperature. It was found that the heat capacity of polypropylene is insensitive to molecular weight. The heat capacities of molten polypropylene composites are found to be predicted by an additive rule from the weight fractions of heat capacities of polypropylene and glass fiber.

    Description: We present speed observations from the Ulysses solar wind plasma experiment through 50 deg south latitude. The pronounced speed modulation arising from solar rotation and the tilt of the heliomagnetic current sheet has nearly disappeared. Ulysses is now observing wind speeds in the 700 to 800 km/s range, with a magnetic polarity indicating an origin in the large south polar coronal hole. The strong compressions, rarefractions, and shock waves previously seen have weakened or disappeared. Occasional coronal mass ejections characterized by low plasma density caused by radial expansion have been observed. The coronal configuration was simple and stable in 1993, indicating that the observed solar wind changes were caused by increasing spacecraft latitude. Trends in prevailing speed with increasing latitude support previous findings. A decrease in peak speed southward of 40 deg latitude may indicate that the fastest solar wind comes from the equatorial extensions of the polar coronal holes.

    Description: Empirical studies suggest a close relationship between the solar-wind speed near the earth and the magnetic structure of the solar corona. The correlation can be used to infer the latitudinal distribution of wind speed at different phases of the sunspot cycle, and to identify the sources of fast, high-latitude wind streams such as those that might be encountered by the Ulysses spacecraft on its journey toward the solar poles during 1992-1995.

    Description: The rotation of coronal holes is modeled in terms of a current-free coronal magnetic field in which holes are the footpoint locations of open field lines. It is shown that ongoing field-line reconnection allows the holes to rotate quasi-rigidly with their outer-coronal extensions. The results suggest that a strong axisymmetric field component may be responsible for the prolonged rigid rotation of large meridional holes during the declining phase of the sunspot cycle.

    Description: Chromospheric network enhancements that occur along the edges of the polar coronal holes immediately after sunspot minimum are studied. It is shown that these enhancements accompany the eruption of the first large high-latitude bipolar magnetic regions of the new sunspot cycle, and that these eruptions must have encountered relatively concentrated polar fields whose strengths decrease rapidly equatorward of about 60 deg latitude. The helium observations are compared with current-free magnetic field calculations, and it is found that the enhanced helium network occurs where relatively strong fields at high latitude become connected to newly erupted bipolar magnetic regions.
