Notes: A model epoxy matrix resin was analyzed using differential scanning calorimetric and rheological techniques. The data was used to construct a time-temperature-phase transformation diagram to investigate the thermoset curing phenomena. Experimental techniques were developed to generate similar data on a carbon/epoxy prepreg material. The data were then compared to study the effects of the presence of the reinforcement on the processing characteristics of the epoxy matrix resin.

Notes: An atmospheric-pressure, vapor-phase polymerization technique was used to deposit thin(1-10 μm) poly(p-phenyleneterephthalamide) coatings onto polyester film and other sheet substrates. A minimum deposition temperature of 170°C, was found to be critical. When substrate temperatures were below 170°C, coatings were loosely adhered, powdery, and of low molecular weight; above 170°C, coherent, well-adhered, high molecular weight coatings were obtained. These vapor-deposited coatings exhibited exceptionally good oxygen barrier properties and were found to consist of fused 0.1-μm particulates. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the top surfaces of these coatings clearly revealed their particulate origin. Similar evidence was also obtained from SEM examination of fracture surfaces and transmission electron microscopy of microtomed sections. The coalescence of these coatings was demonstrated by SEM of plasma-etched surfaces and oxygen permeability information. The uniplanar orientation of the polymer crystals in these multiparticulate coatings was strong evidence for the epitaxial growth of the crystals.

Notes: Studies have been carried out with the tosylate of the monomethyl ether of polyethylene glycol (MeO-PEG-OTs) and with low molecular weight models to assess whether the neighboring oxygen at position 3 or 6 provides the driving force for hydrolytic cleavage of these activated derivatives. Our results reveal that MeO-PEG-OTs undergoes hydrolysis by competitive pathways. Water directly displaces the tosylate group to give the original PEG alcohol and the oxygen at position 6 nucleophilically displaces the tosylate group to give a cyclic oxonium ion as an intermediate. This intermediate can react by three pathways. First, it can lead to the production of the original PEG alcohol by attack of water on a ring carbon; second, dioxane and a lower molecular weight PEG alcohol is produced by water attack at the nonring carbon next to the charged oxygen; and third dioxane can be displaced by the oxygen atom at position 6 in the chain.

Notes: A copolymer of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) with 2-ethoxy ethyl methacrylate (EEMA) was synthesized and the molecular mobility, free volume, and density properties examined as a function of composition. These properties were correlated with the equilibrium water uptake in order to determine which of the properties were most influential in causing high water sorption, as these materials are suitable candidates for hydrogel systems. It was found that the polar HEMA repeat unit results in a rigid, glassy sample at room temperature due to the high degree of hydrogen bonding between chains whereas high EEMA content leads to rubbery samples with subambient glass transition temperatures. The free volume properties on the molecular scale measured by positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) showed that higher HEMA content led to smaller, fewer holes and a lower free volume fraction than EEMA. Therefore the high water uptake of HEEMA-containing copolymers is largely related to the high polarity of the HEMA unit compared to EEMA, despite the low content of free volume into which the water can initially diffuse. Trends in density with copolymer composition, as measured on a macroscopic level, differs to that seen by PALS and indicates that the two techniques are measuring different scales of packing. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notes: Some polyketones were prepared from p-xylene, chloroacetylchloride, 1,2-dichloroethane and dichloromethane using anhydrous aluminiumtrichloride and carbon disulfide as solvent. The resins thus obtained have been characterized by IR spectra and number average molecular weight. The thermal properties have been studied by thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry. All the resins were tested for their biological activity against Pseudomonas fluorescens, Bacillus subtilis and Aspergillus niger. The results show that the growth of the tested organisms can be controlled by the polyketone resins.

Notes: The intrinsic viscosity of cellulose triacetate (CTA) in chloroform-methanol, chloroform-butanol, chloroform-propanol, tetrachloroethane-butanol, dimethyl formamide-methanol, and nitromethane-methanol mixtures is found to increase initially with the amounts of alcohols in the mixture, then decreases in each studied system after attaining a maximum value, while in chloroform-cyclohexane and dioxane-benzene systems values are found to decrease with the decreasing solvent power. The type of the polymer conformation in the binary solvents is found to be dependent on the acetic acid content of the polymer. Studies on the temperature dependence of viscosity in pure and mixed solvent systems indicate that CTA behaves as a stiff chain molecule in the solution.

Notes: An electroanalytical study of three aminohalogenbenzophenones: 2-amino-5-chlorobenzophenone (MCB), 2-amino-2′,5-dichlorobenzo-phenone (DCB), and 2-amino-5-bromo-2′-fluorobenzophenone (BrFB); metabolites of the psychotropic drugs benzodiazepinooxazoles and benzodiazepines, has been carried out at a glassy carbon electrode using different voltammetric techniques. The compounds studied are electrooxidizable in a hydroalcoholic medium (MeOH:H2O, 10 : 90), 0.5 M KC1, and a pH range of 1-13. The oxidation processes are irreversible and predominantly diffusion controlled. On the basis of the oxidation process, voltammetric methods have been developed that allow the determination of aminohalogenbenzophenones from 0.2 to 15ppm for MCB and BrFB, and 0.2 to 14ppm for DCB; with a reproducibility in terms of relative standard deviation (RSD) lower than 5.2% for 10 determinations of 10 ppm solutions of MCB, DCB, and BrFB. Detection limits of 200ppb (μg/L) for MCB and DCB, and 100ppb for BrFB were obtained. The voltammetric method developed for DCB has been applied to the indirect determination of Cloxazolam in tablets.

Notes: Five organic crosslinked materials have been studied for compression properties at room temperature. Their static behavior (0.02 in./min.) and dynamic behavior (up to 1300 in./min.) have been measured as a function of the nature of the material or of its apparent density. The materials with- stand a higher stress, 30 to 40%, and show a higher modulus of elasticity, about 100%, when subjected to rapid loading. Resistance to fracture is a linear function of the apparent density at two speeds. Equipment as well as methods are described.
