Description / Table of Contents: Corrosion and erosion protection of metals and alkaline surfacesWith the aid of numerous examples, it is shown that a suitable construction has an important bearing on the durability of coatings. In recent years, zinc-rich primers on metal sheeting have assumed increasing importance as they preserve the weldability of the metal. A simple apparatus has been designed for the determination of the Zn vapours released during welding. Increasingly important, too, are thick coating systems, especially because of the saving in labour. Paints for non-derusted bases should be regarded with scepticism. Alkaline bases (concrete, mortar) call for alkaline-resistant coatings (e.g. facade paints or sealing compounds for plaster cracks) or, additionally, for resistance to heating oil (heating oil troughs). Among recent developments are paints with multi-colour effect and paints etc. for road markings.

Description / Table of Contents: Poly-∊-caprolactam had been pyrolyzed directly in the ion source of a mass spectrometer. Already at temperatures below 100°C cyclic oligomers present in the polymer begin to evaporate in the high vacuum and can be identified mass spectrometrically without previous isolation. At temperatures above 390°C the start of an intensive thermal degradation is observed under the described conditions, and it can be shown that mainly cyclic oligomers of caprolactam are produced.

Description / Table of Contents: Several aliphatic polyamides (nylon-7, nylon-12, nylon-4, nylon-6,6, nylon-6,10, nylon-4,10, nylon-11,6, nylon-12,12) have been investigated in a mass spectrometer. Cyclic oligomers, which evaporate in the high vacuum of the ion source at temperatures below 200°C can be detected without previous isolation. The start of a thermal decomposition can be observed via the total ion current at temperatures above 350°C. Under those conditions polyactams are degraded by ring-chain equilibration into cyclic oligomers, whereas the favoured decomposition of polyamides of dicarboxylic acids and diamines is a cis elimination and the cleavage of the amide bond. With an increasing content of methylene groups these mechanisms also occur in polylactams. Mass spectra recorded of each polyamide at 170°C and ca. 400°C are characteristic and can be used for a fast identification and differentiation.

Notes: The rheological properties of polystyrene have been studied between 90 and 240°C. as a function of molecular weight. Three different methods have been used to obtain the data: rotational viscometer, extrusion-type capillary viscometer, and tensile creep measurements. It has been shown that the nonrecoverable (viscous) deformation is a function of molecular weight whereas the recoverable deformations are, within the investigated molecular weight range, practically independent of chain length. An explanation of this observation is suggested, based on the assumption of a labile network structure, which explains also the effect of “previous history” on the recoverable deformations. The temperature dependence of the recoverable and nonrecoverable deformations is shown to be very similar. Experimental evidence is presented to show that the dependence of the viscosity on shear stress (or rate of shear) is not a simple power relationship but is of the sigmoidal type. It is shown that the creep or compliance function a few degrees below the second-order transition point does not depend on the weight- or number average molecular weight.

Notes: A procedure is described for the measurement of number-average molecular weight M̄n on a specimen in bulk form, utilizing a dynamic torsion pendulum. For both atactic and isotactic polystyrenes it has been found that the minimum value of the damping logarithmic decrement, δm, (above the glass temperature) is related to an measured osmometrically in dilute solution by M̄n = δm-1.9 × 105. The M̄v/M̄n ratio can also be estimated directly from the δ vs. temperature curve. A four-element spring-and-dashpot model yields similar 6 vs. T curves when the Williams-Landel-Ferry temperataure dependence is assigned to the viscosity of the dashpots.
