Notes: The electroanalytical behavior of testosterone thiosemicarbazone (TT) has been investigated by linear sweep and differential pulse voltammetry with and without adsorptive preconcentration on a hanging mercury drop electrode (HMDE). The adsorptive stripping response has been evaluated with respect to preconcentration time and potential, drop size, scan rate, and other variables. Measurement of a selected reduction wave enables the determination of TT in the μg L-1 range, with a detection limit of 100 ng L-1 (10 min preconcentration time). The determination can also be carried out in a urine/aqueous NaClO4 (2/8) medium. The immunological interaction of TT with the testosterone specific antibody can be electrochemically monitored via the decrease in the reduction wave, as described previously. This property is discussed as a tool for the determination of testosterone and its specific antibody by competitive immunoassay with amperometric detection in real matrices such as urine.

Notes: Rheological properties of styrene-butadiene copolymer-reinforced asphalt were investigated. A percolation-like model was used to fit dynamical experimental data, and a comparison with the Kerner-Takayanagi model is presented. In addition, a frequency-composition-temperature correspondence principle is proposed. This correspondence principle allows the prediction of the rheological behavior of an asphalt-based composite within a wide range of compositions, provided a narrow composition range at different frequencies and temperatures is previously known. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Morphology and tensile properties of several styrene-butadiene copolymer reinforced asphalts have been investigated. In all cases, the raw materials were commercial samples; for the styrene-butadiene copolymer, a branching (nonlinear) block polymeric chain of high molecular weight was used. On the other hand, the asphalt was a nonoxydized commercial sample. The raw materials were characterized prior to making the composite. The morphology and mechanical properties of composites obtained at different chemical compositions were determined, and a comparison of these experimental results to different models, according to the composite morphology, is shown. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The formation of a charge-transfer complex (CTC) between maleic anhydride and tetrahydrofuran both in bulk and in chloroform solution is proved by electronic absorption spectroscopy, and its association constant at 35°C is determined by this technique and by 1H NMR. The effect of irradiation with monochromatic 350 nm light upon the fluorescence spectrum of the CTC excited with this same radiation is studied. Significant changes are noted in the bulk system, but the changes are much smaller in the presence of methyl methacrylate which is simultaneously polymerized. The effect of oxygen on the polymerization is discussed.

Notes: Several polypropylene-ethylene vinyl acetate (PP/EVA) copolymers with compositions ranging from 90/10 to 10/90 PP/EVA were prepared and characterized in terms of their morphology by transmission and scanning electron microscopy, and their mechanical properties were also studied. The results show a wide range of spatial structures which correlate well to the corresponding measurements of elastic modulus of the blends.
