Notes: Applications of x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy imaging in the analysis of heterogeneous polymer surfaces are evaluated using a sample containing tetrafluoroethylene plasma-deposited onto polyethylene. The C 1s and F 1s images acquired using non-monochromatic Mg Kα and monochromatic Al Kα x-ray sources are used to demonstrate good charge stabilization, as confirmed by small-area spectra. The use of non-monochromatic flood sources vs. monochromatic focused x-ray ray sources for image acquisition is discussed. The use of the valence band region for imaging is also demonstrated.

Notes: The process of determining the overlapping peaks in complex X-ray photoelectron spectra of polymer surfaces is posed mathematically as an inverse problem whose solution can be reduced to a standard least-squares procedure. Various models can be generated by assuming specific forms for the distribution of effective binding energies corresponding to photoelectron kinetic energies and for the spreading kernel characteristic of the spectrometer. A particular generalized asymmetric model is developed for monochromatic X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of polymer surfaces based on physically meaningful electron energy loss characteristics and assuming the spreading kernel to possess both Gaussian and Lorentzian forms. Computer fits to experimental X-ray photoelectron spectra indicate that the asymmetric model and curve-fitting procedures employed offer an effective and flexible means for analyzing X-ray photoelectron spectra.

Notes: High-impact strength polystyrenes have been prepared which contain an included phase of polystyrene-grafted chlorobutyl rubber microgel. By use of a technique which involved precrosslinking the elastomer, monomer imbibement, a gel dispersal step, and a final suspension polymerization of the styrene monomer, products are produced having a high elastomer phase-to-elastomer ratio and suitable microgel particle size. These products have properties equivalent, in most respects, to commercial polybutadiene-based high-impact polystyrenes and have much improved resistance to outdoor aging.

Notes: Several N-(phosphonomethyl) amides have previously been reported to act as particularly effective flame retardants for cellulose. It has also been demonstrated previously that the efficiency of a flame retardant on cellulose frequently parallels its ability to phosphorylate cellulosic hydroxyls at elevated temperatures. This study of the hydrolysis and alcoholysis reactions of N-(phosphonomethyl) amides establishes their unique reactivity. An explanation for this high reactivity is proposed on the basis of intramolecular assistance of the attack of water or alcohols at phosphorus by the carbonyl oxygen of the amide moiety.

Notes: BDSDA/APB, a novel linear polyethersulfideimide, was synthesized using siloxane units as flexible linkages in the backbone in an attempt to improve use properties and processability. The effect of these flexible linkages on molecular weight buildup (Mn and Mw), GIc, flexural strength and modulus, glass transition temperature, and melt-flow properties was determined.

Notes: The state of dispersion of poly(ethylene-co-propylene) (PEP) rubber and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) in polypropylene (PP) blends was investigated using scanning electron microscopy to examine solvent-etched microtomed surfaces cut at low temperatures. The validity of the method was established by comparing the areal fraction of dispersed particles in micrographs with the volume fraction of PEP and HDPE in PP-rich blends. When small amounts of PEP and HDPE were added to PP, they combined to form composite PEP-HDPE particles with characteristic internal structures in a PP matrix. Changes in impact strength and flexural modulus with changes in mixing conditions and blend composition were determined and interpreted in terms of the size, composition, and internal structure of the dispersed particles. Particle growth in the melt limited the impact strength level achieved in molded articles. A simple model proposed for screening rubbers for toughening of brittle plastics successfully predicts that PEP rubber should be an excellent impact modifier for PP.

Notes: Two similar polyimide systems were synthesized and characterized. The only structural difference was a sulfide linkage in the anhydride-derived portion of the first system vs. a sulfone linkage in the second. Their physical, mechanical, melt-flow and thermal properties, and their resistance to some of the more common solvents were determined. The flow properties of these polyimides indicate a potential for melt processability.
