Notes: Abstract LaRCTM-IA, the polyimide prepared with 3,4′-oxydianiline (3,4′-ODA) and oxydiphthalic anhydride (ODPA), is useful as a film, coating, adhesive, and composite matrix. The high temperature capability and fire-resistance of polyimides also makes them attractive candidates for textile fibers for a variety of uses in the automotive, chemical, and aerospace industries. This research describes for the first time the melt-spinning of phthalic anhydride endcapped LaRCTM-IA and the effects of processing conditions on the mechanical properties of slightly-drawn fibers. Average draw ratios varied from 1 to 3.9. Tensile strengths ranged from 103 to 159 MPa; moduli ranged from 2.80 to 3.21 GPa; elongations at break ranged from 14 to 103%. For comparison, tensile properties of compression-molded films prepared at the same temperatures are also reported. Melt-extruded fibers and melt-pressed films of another thermoplastic, ULTEM®, were also fabricated. ULTEM® fibers exhibited tensile strengths ranging from 138 to 207 MPa for average draw ratios of 4.5 to 10.3. Moduli ranged from 2.70 to 3.22 GPa. Elongations at break ranged from 47 to 111%.

Notes: BDSDA/APB, a novel linear polyethersulfideimide, was synthesized using siloxane units as flexible linkages in the backbone in an attempt to improve use properties and processability. The effect of these flexible linkages on molecular weight buildup (Mn and Mw), GIc, flexural strength and modulus, glass transition temperature, and melt-flow properties was determined.

Notes: Two similar polyimide systems were synthesized and characterized. The only structural difference was a sulfide linkage in the anhydride-derived portion of the first system vs. a sulfone linkage in the second. Their physical, mechanical, melt-flow and thermal properties, and their resistance to some of the more common solvents were determined. The flow properties of these polyimides indicate a potential for melt processability.

Notes: A novel linear aromatic polyphenylene ethersulfideimide (BDSDA/APB) has been synthesized. Its physical, mechanical, thermal, and flow properties and its resistance to some of the more commonly used solvents were determined. The results of these property evaluations indicate this polymer system can be processed via conventional thermoplastic techniques. It has been molded, used as a resin, and cast into thin films and, accordingly, may have a wide variety of applications. Its molecular weight was varied by endcapping with phthalic anhydride. Over the M̄n range 14,000-45,000 the apparent viscosities and GIc values varied only slightly. However, a change in M̄n from 14,000 to 8700 resulted in a dramatic decrease in the apparent viscosity at both 250°C and 280°C. The GIc values for these same molecular weight materials decreased in a like manner as the M̄n decreased, indicating tradeoffs can be made between process optimization and final mechanical properties when polymer systems are developed.

Notes: Polyamic acids, prepared by reacting 3,3′,4,4′-benzophenone tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride with 3,3′-diaminobenzophenone and with 4,4′-diaminobenzophenone, were dissolved in tetrahydrofuran and in bis(2-methoxyethyl) ether at concentrations up to 40 wt %. Reversible phase separation was observed when these systems were heated. Evidence cited indicates that all observed phases are isotropic, notwithstanding the fact that a number of aromatic polyamides are mesogenic.

Notes: Addition polyirnide oligomers with nadimide end groups (I) have been synthesized from 4,4′-oxydiphthalic anhydride and 3,3′,4,4′-benzophenone tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride with several isomeric diamines and, nadic anhydride. The low molecular weight amic acid? and corresponding imides were isolated and characterized. Solubility and melt-flow properties of the imide prepolymers were studied to determine the applicability of the resins as adhesives and composite matrices. Thermomechanical transitions of the polymers were obtained by torsional braid analysis. Properties were compared with a similar addition polymer, P13N.
