    Description / Table of Contents: A survey of the determinations of Rayleigh's constant for liquids shows that a number of different investigators using photographic methods arrive at self-consistent results which are considerably lower than those of Carr and Zimm and that expected from some theoretical views. The former set of results agree with modified theoretical views but neither this nor the determination of molecular weights allows a confirmation of the absolute value of the Rayleigh's constant. The authors recommend the adoption of the values determined photographically.
    Notes: Une revue des déterrninations des constantes de Rayleigh pour les liquides montre qu'un nombre appréciable de chercheurs différents arrivent è des réultats concordants en utilisant des m6thodes photographiques; ces rèultats sont considCablement plus bas que ceux de Carr et Zimm et que ceux prévus par la thérie. Le premier groupe de rbultats confirme des considérations thériques modifiées, mais ni ces réultats ni la dbtermination des poi& moléculahes n'apportent de confirmation de la valeur absolue de la constante de Rayleigh. Les auteurs recommandent l'adoption des valeurs déterminks photographiquement.

    Notes: The cationic polymerization of 3,3-bis(azidomethyl)oxetane (BAMO) was compared with the polymerization of 3,3-bis(chloromethyl)oxetane (BCMO). The initiating system, boron trifluoride diethyl etherate/diethylene glycol (system. name: 2,2′-oxydiethanol) was used and it was shown that unusually high concentrations were necessary to observe polymerization. NMR analysis of poly(BAMO), produced by this initiating system, suggested that BAMO polymerization proceeds through the activated-monomer mechanism. The oligomer functionality, which was found close to 2, supports this suggestion. It was also shown that by copolymerization of BAMO with 3-chloromethyl-3-(2,5,8-trioxadecyl)oxetane the crystallization tendancy and the glass transition temperature of poly(BAMO) decreased.

    Notes: The cationic polymerization or copolymerization of various alkenyl monomers was investigated in the presence of azide groups. The monomers were either of the n-π-donor type, such as vinyl ethers, or π-donors, such as isobutene (2-methylpropene) or styrene. The azide groups were introduced by a suitable comonomer, such as 2-azidoethyl vinyl ether (AEVE) or 4-azidomethyl-styrene (AMS). The initiator was TiCl4. 3-Azido-2-methyl-1-propene (AMP) (methallyl azide) revealed to be not polymerizable. In the case of vinyl ethers, their cationic polymerization in the presence of azide groups requires high Lewis acid concentrations, according to the work previously carried out on oxetanes. In the case of the less nucleophilic monomers styrene and isobutene it was shown that cationic polymerization takes place provided that the initiator concentration is equal or higher than that of the azide group. This effect was assigned to a complexation between the Lewis acid and the azide group, and consequently the more nucleophilic the monomers (heterocyclics or vinyl ethers) are the lower the required Lewis acid concentration to observe cationic polymerization. Some evidence was found showing that the isobutene polymerization carried out in the presence of a molecular containing an azide group results in an azido-endcapped polyisobutene while in the case of styrene and vinyl ethers cationic copolymerization with comonomers containing azide groups was observed.

    Description: Arising from M. A. Nowak, C. E. Tarnita & E. O. Wilson 466, 1057-1062 (2010); Nowak et al. reply. Nowak et al. argue that inclusive fitness theory has been of little value in explaining the natural world, and that it has led to negligible progress in explaining the evolution of eusociality. However, we believe that their arguments are based upon a misunderstanding of evolutionary theory and a misrepresentation of the empirical literature.     Description: The Tax transactivator of the human T cell leukemia virus type I (HTLV-I) exhibits oncogenic properties. A screen for proteins interacting with Tax yielded a complementary DNA (cDNA) encoding the human Int-6 protein. In mice, the Int-6 gene can be converted into a putative dominant negative oncogene after retroviral insertion. Here, Int-6 was localized in the cell nucleus to give a speckled staining pattern superposed to that of the promyelocytic leukemia (PML) protein. The binding of Tax to Int-6 caused its redistribution from the nuclear domains to the cytoplasm.
