Description / Table of Contents:
A transformation of chemical into mechanical energy is shown to occur with the help of a filament, containing equal parts of polyvinylalcohol and polyacrylic acid by stretching the filament through addition of alcali to the embedding medium, attaching its lower end to a weight and consequently producing a contraction of the filament through the addition of acid to the embedding liquid. The demonstration of the details of this energy trailsformation and the proof of an up to 100% efficiency is facilitated by the use of a cross-striated system in which soft contriictilc and thin hard non contractilc layers are alternating and which contracts and dilates through the action of chemical or mechanical means at constant cross-section.A mechanical dilation of the cross-striated rod produces an increase of the hydrogen ion activity in the embedding medium which is fundamental for the energy transformation. If the mechanically unloaded croes-striated rod is dilated from L1 to L2 by increasing the degree of neutralisation from α1 to α2 through addition of NaOH and if the degree of neutralisation is consequently reduced from α2 to α1 at constant length L2 of the rod, the free energy of neutralisation of the a1cali used for the stretching with the acid used for the reestahlishment of α1 is exactly equal to the mechanical energy delivered during the mcchanical contraction from L2 to L1 (at constant α1).A similar result is also obtained for the homogeneous pH sensitive system; it may be generalized to hold principally for contractile redox-systems and presumably also for further contractile high polymer systems. The production of mechanical from chemical energy through high polymer corktractile systems is obviously therefore a general principle fully equivalent to other known ways of energy production.
Notes:
