The polymerization of butadiene with the catalyst-system cobalt compound/ethyl-aluminum-sesquichloride in the solvent benzene was investigated. The active catalyst is a π-complex of cobalt with butadiene, the formation of which is only effected by a small amount of a certain LEWIS-base, e.g., water, ether, phosphine etc. In the active catalyst complex the cobalt has the valence +1, which is stabilised by the LEWIS-base.The polymerization of butadiene by the catalyst system cobalt-III-acetylacetonate/ethylaluminum-sesquichloride was kinetically investigated by means of adiabatic calorimetry. The overall rate of the polymerization follows the equation: The concentration of ethyl-aluminum-sesquichloride does not enter the rate equation. The fraction on the right side of the equation takes into account a partial reversible inactivation of the catalyst by the solvent benzene or other additives. The donator-strength KD is a numerical expression for the tendency of benzene and other additives to form a complex with the cobalt. By adding small amounts of substituted aromates to the polymerization mixture the donator-strength of these compounds could be determined from the decrease of the rate of polymerization. The rate of catalyst formation depends in a first order on the concentrations of cobalt not yet complexed and on ethyl-aluminum-sesquichloride, in zero order on the concentration of butadiene. The rate-determining step is the reduction of the cobalt from the valence +2 to +1.
Notes:
