Notes: Kinetics of radiation-induced grafting of acrylamide (Aam) and acrylic acid (Aa) to nylon 6 fabric were investigated employing a mutual radiation technique. Copper sulfate was used as the radical scavenger to reduce homopolymer formation. Formic acid was used for swelling, and its effect on grafting was studied. Maximum amount of grafting was doubled when formic acid was used for swelling nylon prior to, but not during, irradiation. The rate of grafting was not significantly affected if it was carried out in an atmosphere of air instead of nitrogen. The effect of monomer concentration, dose rate, and total dose on grafting has been studied. Rate of grafting was significantly higher when lower dose rates and monomer concentrations were used. Saturation grafting was proportional to monomer concentration up to 2.1M. Initial rate of grafting was proportional to monomer concentration. The rate of grafting of Aam was proportional to the dose rate to the power 0.25-1.0. A synergestic effect was noticed during grafting with mixtures of Aam and Aa (80:20; 20:80). Grafted fabrics showed considerable increase in moisture regain. Dyeability and tensile properties of the grafted fabrics were not significantly affected by grafting. Aa-grafted fabrics did not melt up to 320°C, whereas untreated nylon melts at 215°C.

Notes: The cation-exchange resins based on α-pinene and furfural were characterized systematically as to their polyfunctionality, rate of exchange and thermal stability. Equilibrium studies for univalent and bivalent ions were also conducted.

Notes: Ultrafiltration membranes were prepared from cellulose nitrate under different conditions and were characterized using a solution of 1.0% dextran-150 having a salinity of 1500 ppm. The role of various parameters such as polymer concentration, ratio of ether to alcohol, methanol as the solvent, and other additives is systematically studied and presented. Similarly, the effect of operational and hydraulic parameters on the membrane performance is evaluated and the minimum activation energy for the solvent permeability is experimentally deduced.

Notes: The processes of sorption and diffusion of water in anisotropic glass ribbon-reinforced composite films of controlled structural and physical characteristics were investigated in terms of the film properties, e.g., geometry, orientation, and volume fraction of the filler; molding characteristics of the composite film; and the adhesion between the glass ribbon and continuous cellulose acetate matrix. While the diffusion of water through unfilled cellulose acetate film was found to be a simple activated process with very little concentration dependence, the diffusion behavior of glass ribbon-reinforced cellulose acetate was found to be anomalous and concentration dependent.

Notes: A crosslinked polymer based on α-pinene and furfural suitable for processing into ion exchangers was prepared. The polymer has been processed chemically into different types of cation exchange resins. The role of various parameters such as catalyst concentration, proportion of crosslinking agent, etc., for preparing the polymer is systematically studied and presented. Similarly, the conditions for preparing the various cation exchange resins (sulfonic, phosphonic, and hydroxy phosphonic acid type from the polymer) are also described. A probable/possible composition for the repeating unit in the basic polymer is proposed and supported by experimental evidences.

Notes: The equilibrium melting temperature, volume, and enthalpy and entropy changes on melting of poly(ethylene terephthalate) have been analyzed and heats of fusion have been newly measured with an automated scanning calorimeter to yield the following data: 553°K, 16.9 cm3/mole, 2.69 kJ/mole, and 48.6 J/deg/mole, respectively. A more detailed discussion of annealed samples obtained from etched starting materials shows that the density of the noncrystalline regions may be variable.
