    Notes: Segmented polyurethanes with N-alkylated amides as soft blocks as prepared. Comparisons are made with both a poly(ester urethane) and a poly(ether urethane) with the same hard block; the poly(amide urethane) is more hydrolytically stable than the polyester containing material and demonstrates greater thermooxidative stability than that with the polyether moiety. The aliphatic poly(amide urethane)s remain transparent upon exposure to uv light.

    Notes: Block copolyurethanes with N-alkylated polyurethanes as nonself-associating soft segments are prepared. The polymers compare well in hydrolytic stability with block copoly(N-alkylamide urethane)s prepared in an earlier study but have better dimensional stability on exposure to moist heat. They show comparable hydrolytic stability and better oxidative stability than a poly(ether urethane) from the earlier study. The effect of different alkyl substituents on tensile properties and thermostability is studied. The tensile properties are also examined as a function of soft-segment molecular weight at constant weight-percent of hard-block. It is shown that yield stress and ultimate stress increase and elongations decrease as the soft-block M̄n increases. DSC measurements do not generally show well defined endotherms with few exceptions but dynamic mechanical testing of some samples does show transitions between 14 and 23°C.

    Notes: A new method for recording multiple dark-field transmission electron micrographs using a scanning transmission electron microscope fitted with a quadrant detector is described. Simultaneous multiple recording is particularly advantageous when studying electron beamsensitive polymers and images of crystals of poly(butylene terephthalate) are presented by way of example. Resolution levels of ca. 10 nm are demonstrated.

    Notes: The kinetic deuterium isotope effect was used to investigate the rate-limiting process in the combustion of formulated nitramine propellants. Model propellant formulations containing either octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine (HMX), hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX), or their deuteriated analogues were pressed into pellets and burned under nitrogen pressure in a window bomb. The magnitudes of the observed deuterium isotope effects indicate that the HMX and RDX exert significant control over the combustion phenomenon of the propellants studied. Furthermore, assuming a consistent mechanism between decomposition and combustion, the observed isotope effects suggest that a carbon-hydrogen bond rupture in HMX or RDX is the rate-controlling step in the combustion of the model nitramine propellants. Observed isotope effect values for HMX-CW5 and RDX-CW5 formulated propellants at 1000 psig (6.99 MPa) pressure were 1.29 ± 0.09 and 1.24 ± 0.07, respectively, compared to a theoretical estimate of 1.29 for a primary effect due to C—H bond rupture at 673 K.
