Notes: Summary The distribution of polycationic and polyanionic binding sites in the electric organ of Torpedo marmorata was investigated by incubation of tissue with native (NF) and cationized (CF) ferritin. 1) Collagen fibrils from the electric organ carry rosettes of polyanionic sites on their surface with a periodicity of 60 nm, corresponding to the pattern of crossbanding in collagen fibrils. The CF-binding sites are about 30 nm in size and project 20 nm beyond the surface of the fibril. 2) As revealed by incubation of tissue homogenates, CF heavily stains the intraperiod line of the axonal myelin and also tubular structures in the axonal cytoplasm. 3) Neither the extracellular aspects of the prenor the postsynaptic membrane became labeled with either NF or CF. After incubation of tissue homogenates, labeling of the electron-dense material of the cytoplasmic aspect of the postsynaptic membrane was observed with NF and, in particular, with CF. The ventral basal lamina of the electroplaque cell revealed uniform labeling with NF. In contrast, CF-binding sites were distributed in the lamina densa of the basal lamina as a lattice of discrete binding sites, approximately 45 nm in diameter. The presence of polyanionic sites in the basal lamina, which also proceeds through the synaptic cleft, suggests the existence of a diffusion barrier for the released neurotransmitter acetylcholine. It is proposed that this facilitates hydrolysis of acetylcholine in the synaptic cleft and recirculation of the products of hydrolysis to the axon terminal.

Description / Table of Contents: In connection with investigations on the reaction kinetics in the synthesis of polybutylene terephthalate the composition of the destillates and volatile degradation products formed have been studied. The multicomponent mixtures were separated by gaschromatography and the structure was characterized by mass spectroscopy. Based on the compounds identified the possible side reactions occuring in the synthesis of polybutylene terephthalate are discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: The kinetics of thermal degradation of polyethylene terephthalate containing antimony and zinc derivatives as polycondensation catalysts was investigated in an open and a closed stirred system by the increase of carboxyl groups. Based on kinetic data the allowed residence times in the processing stages of PETP melts are derived. Further, the activation entropies are calculated and the mechanism of thermal splitting of ester bonds catalyzed by metal derivatives is discussed. The suggested reaction mechanism is supported by kinetic data obtained in model experiments with ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol and butane diol-1,4-dibenzoate as well as by thermal degradation of polybutyleneterephthalate.

Notes: Cells of mammalian origin as well as those of higher plants appear to be very sensitive to triethyllead ion (Et3Pb+). Neuroblastoma cells kept in the presence of 1 μM Et3Pb+ lost their viability within 6 h. Growth of suspension culture cells of soybean (G. max(L.)Merr.) was inhibited by 1 μM Et3Pb+, and finally the cells died. Morphologically, Et3Pb+ caused the complete breakdown of microtubular structures in neuroblastoma cells; thus microtubules appeared to be the main target for the toxin. While in a previous study the effect of Et3Pb+ on microtubules has been well documented at concentrations of 50-200 μM1, the present study demonstrates that the formation of microtubules from pig brain tubulin is disturbed at concentrations of Et3Pb+ as low as 0.5 to 1 μM. We conclude from these data that Et3Pb+ freely permeates the plasma membranes of mammalian as well as plant cells.

Description / Table of Contents: Electrochemical Syntheses. VIII. Preparation of π-Cyclopentadienyl Metal CompoundsThe electrochemical synthesis of π-cyclopentadienyl metal compounds M(π-Cp)2 (M = Fe, Co, Ni) and of cyclopentadienyl carbonyl derivatives (π-Cp)nM(CO)m(M = Fe, Co, Ni, Ti, V) has been investigated. Most of the complexes can be prepared directly from the corresponding metal anodes, monomeric cyclopentadiene (and CO) in moderate or good yields.

Description / Table of Contents: Solid state polycondensation of poly(ethylene terephthalate) was performed in flowing nitrogen, varying reaction temperature and flow rate of purge gas. The effect of concentration of end groups on the rate of reactions is be described by a kinetic model. Maximum of the rate of overall reaction is achieved at a ratio of end-groups OH/COOH = 2. The advantages of solid state polycondensation and melt polycondensation in producing high molecular weight poly(ethylene terephthalate) are compared.
