Notizen: The transformations of the polymorphic forms of polybutene-1 (I,II,III) were studied by infrared spectroscopy. Attenuated total reflectance spectra demonstrate that the II → I transformation occurs initially and most rapidly on the film surfaces. Electron irradiation experiments showed the II → I conversion can be suppressed by irradiation. The degree of suppression was dependent on the irradiation dose. Comparison of spectra on irradiation in air and vacuum indicate that radiation-produced radicals are scavenged by oxygen, preventing intermolecular crosslinking and allowing normal expansion of the helix during transformation. In addition, remolding an irradiated sample of II caused immediate conversion to I rather than its return to II as was noted when unirradiated samples are remolded. These observations are related to certain conformational changes in the molecular structure.

Notizen: The surface of thin polyethylene films (ca. 1 mil) nucleated on high- and low-energy surfaces was studied. It was found that the degree of crystallinity in the surface region, as determined by transmission and reflection infrared spectroscopy, was dependent on the nature of the substrate. Relatively small and randomly oriented spherulites were observed in the surface region of thin polyethylene films nucleated on gold, a high-energy surface. The surface region of a thin polythylene film nucleated on polytetrafluoroethylene, a low-energy substrate, was observed to have considerably fewer spherulites, but much larger in size, with orientation restricted, in general, to the plane of the film. The relative intensity of the 720 cm-1 to the 730 cm-1 band in the reflectance spectra (ATR) indicates that the surface region of a polyethylene film nucleated on a high surface energy substrate is more crystalline than the surface region of a film nucleated on a low surface energy substrate.

Notizen: Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVF2) is currently used to form piezoelectric films. The PVF2 molecule can exist in more than one stable conformation and it has electrically polar groups making the polymer amenable to the electrification processes involved in the formation of the piezoelectric film. The two crystalline forms of PVF2 are distinguishable by far-infrared spectroscopy. Polarized far-infrared spectra (1000-50 cm-1) of uniaxially oriented PVF2 show changes in the strong perpendicular dichroism in a number of absorptions before and after being made piezoelectric. The dichroism is attributed to a structural rearrangement from a staggered trans-gauche-trans-gauché conformation to a planar zig zag conformation. In the latter conformation the permanent dipoles are oriented approximately at right angles to the surfaces of the film and result in an electrically polarized film.

Notizen: Allyl free-radical intermediates are detected by ultraviolet absorption at 255 mu in poly(vinyl chloride) irradiated at -196°C and stored at 25°C. In vacuum at 25°C, allyl radicals are converted into polyenyl free radicals and polyenes. From the nature of allyl radical decay in vacuum, radical chain transfer between polyenyl radicals and poly(vinyl chloride) is inferred. Allyl and polyenyl free radicals are scavenged by oxygen on post-irradiation storage in air.

Notizen: A variety of techniques were used to follow the thermal degradation of a poly(parabanic acid) (PPA-M). The kinetic data associated with the weight loss as a function of time at elevated temperatures indicates a random initiation process followed by depolymerization. Infrared and mass spectral techniques further confirmed the kinetic data by showing the presence of isocyanate and amide groups in addition to CO, CO2, and nitric oxide gases being evolved. Incipient gelation occurs simultaneously with the formation of the amide. A reverse Hoffman rearrangement mechanism has been proposed which appears to be consistent with the available experimental data.

Notizen: Transcrystalline films of polyethylene were studied by polarized infrared spectroscopy with varying angles of incidence. The average orientation of the unit cells in the transcrystalline structure was shown to be such that the a axes were predominantly parallel to the surface of the films, and the b axes were predominantly perpendicular to the surface.

Notizen: Spectra of vinyl chloride - propylene copolymers irradiated at low temperature in vacuum have been obtained at selected temperatures in the range 130-335°K. Copolymers and PVC homopolymer pass through identical intermediate states of dehydrochlorination in which alkyl, allyl, and polyenyl radicals are observed. Substantial spectral differences between copolymers and PVC appearing in the final states of dehydrochlorination after warming above room temperature are consistent with shorter average polyene lengths in the copolymers. This probably results from termination of polyene growth by propylene comonomer. Spectral differences at long wavelength between copolymers with varying amounts of propylene are minor compared to the basic changes between copolymer and homopolymer.

Beschreibung: Germ-line mutations of the APC gene are responsible for familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), an autosomal dominantly inherited disease in humans. Patients with FAP develop multiple benign colorectal tumors. Recently, a mouse lineage that exhibits an autosomal dominantly inherited predisposition to multiple intestinal neoplasia (Min) was described. Linkage analysis showed that the murine homolog of the APC gene (mApc) was tightly linked to the Min locus. Sequence comparison of mApc between normal and Min-affected mice identified a nonsense mutation, which cosegregated with the Min phenotype. This mutation is analogous to those found in FAP kindreds and in sporadic colorectal cancers.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Su, L K -- Kinzler, K W -- Vogelstein, B -- Preisinger, A C -- Moser, A R -- Luongo, C -- Gould, K A -- Dove, W F -- CA-06973/CA/NCI NIH HHS/ -- CA-07175/CA/NCI NIH HHS/ -- CA-23076/CA/NCI NIH HHS/ -- etc. -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1992 May 1;256(5057):668-70.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Molecular Genetics Laboratory, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD 21231.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1350108" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉
