Notizen: A novel gas-flow method of measuring the diffusion, solubility, and permeability of gases and vapors in polymer films is described. The specific advantages of this system over the time-lag technique are discussed. Transport data, including activation energies and enthalpies of solutions, for hydrogen and deuterium in poly(vinyl fluoride) are presented, and the effects of the glass transition and of orientation on the observed transport rates are discussed.

Notizen: Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization (MALDI) Time of Flight (TOF) Mass Spectrometry (MS) was used to study the molecular weight distribution (MWD) and the number of α-methyl styrene (α-MeSty) repeat units in SRM 1487, a narrow MWD poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) standard reference material of about 6300 g/mol, which was initiated with α-MeSty. It was found that each PMMA polymer chain had from zero to seven α-MeStys per chain. The MWD of the polymer chains containing a fixed number of α-MeStys was obtained. The MWD, Mw, and the average number of α-MeSty at a given molecular weight from MALDI TOF MS compare well with those obtained from more traditional methods such as ultracentrifugation and Size Exclusion Chromatography (SEC). The implications of the number of α-MeStys per chain is discussed in terms of the chemistry of anionic polymerization. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys 35: 2409-2419, 1997

Notizen: Grignard reagent-initiated polymerization of thietane gave a soluble crystalline polymer melting at 59°C. Oxidation of the polymer with one or two equivalents of hydrogen peroxide gave the sulfoxide and sulfone, respectively. The sulfoxide was noncrystalline and insoluble in all common solvents at room temperature and softened at 185-200°C. The sulfone was partially crystalline and insoluble.

Notizen: Two vertebrate hypolipidemic agents, cholestyramine and niacin, affected the growth and development of Heliothis zea as well as the quantity of acylglyceride or sterol present in the larva. As the concentration of cholestyramine in the diet increased to 6.0%: the number of larval molts increased from 5 or 6 to as many as 7 or 8, the time required for the onset of pupation increased from 11 or 12 to 20 days, and the number of adults that emerged decreased from at least 70 to 0%. The growth and development of the insect may have slowed, at least in part, because this agent reduced the quantity of sterol and glyceride in the tissues of the larva. Niacin also affected the growth and development of the insect. As the concentration of niacin in the diet increased to 5.0%: the number of larval molts increased by 1, the time required for the onset of pupation increased to 21 days, pupal weight decreased significantly, but adult emergence was normal. The growth and development of the insect may have slowed, at least in part, because this agent caused sterol to accumulate in the hemolymph of the larva. A water-soluble component in the hemolymph also increased in the presence of niacin, but there was little or no change in the glyceride content. Further studies are warranted to determine the mode of action of these hypolipidemic agents in H. zea.
