Notes:
Azulene was totally deuterated by treatment with bariumoxide in heavy water at high temperature. The exchange reaction of azulene-d8 in methanol with picric acid is shown to produce an azulene-d6 of definite structure, which is very likely to be azulene-d6-(2,4,5,6,7,8). Infrared spectra of the two hitherto unknown compounds in carbontetrachloride solution are given, together with those of azulene-d2-(1,3) and undeuterated azulene. The electronic absorption spectra of the deuterated compounds in cyclohexane show a systematic hypsochromic shift of frequencies.
