Polyhalogenated Bicyclo[4.2.0]octa-1,5,7-trienes, VIII. Synthesis and Cyclodimerization of Polyhalogenated 2-Phenyl- and 2-Pentachlorophenyl Substituted ButenynesStarting material for the synthesis of the butenynes 1c - e is the aldehyde 4 which can be converted into 1c via 9 or 5 and 10 as well as into 1d via 8. In the four-step synthesis of 1e the decisive reaction is the perchlorination of the phenyl group in 6 to 7 with the Ballester reagent. The preparation of 1c starting with 11 is less suitable because the benzofulvene 15 is formed as byproduct in the reaction 12 → 13 with phosphorus pentachloride. Cyclodimerization of 1c, d and e yields 2c, d and e. Prolonged heating leads to 3c and d. 2e is less stable than 2c and d. It rearranges into 3e even in solid state within a few days. For characterization of the dimers, 3c - e are hydrolized to the benzocyclobutenediones 17b and c. 17b is oxidized to 18 and reacts with phenyl-hydrazine to form 19. Ring opening of 17b by bases tends to the same direction as that of 17a with formation of phenylglyoxylic acid 20a and its derivatives 20b - d.
Notes:
