Notes: Summary The influence of column temperature and pressure on the planarity selectivity of encapsulated and polymeric octadecylsilane-modified silicas was examined using carbon dioxide mobile phase in supercritical fluid and liquid chromatography. The use of liquid carbon dioxide was found to enhance remarkably the molecular planarity recognition capability of the polymeric stationary phase compared with supercritical conditions. The influence of pressure and temperature on selectivity was seen to be significant with the polymeric phase but less with the encapsulated. It seems that pressure and temperature change the morphology of the polymeric phase to a greater extent than the encapsulated one.

Notes: Summary An existing commercial refractive index detector was modified for use with microbore column LC systems. The detector utilizes the Fresnel method. The effect of band dispersion and dilution at the detector side is of extreme importance in connection with the miniaturized LC system. In the modified model the original heat-exchanger tube was removed and a stainless steel capillary was used for heat-exchanging. Gaskets having different cell volumes were also examined with respect to band broadening and sensitivity. The detection limit was 10ng for di-n-pentyl phthalate. The examples include the detection of phthalates, alcohols, n-paraffins, and kerosine.

Notes: The chromatographic performance of the deuterated solvents, CD3OD and D2O, has been investigated in reversed-phase micro high performance liquid chromatography. The chromatographic performance of CD3OD is only slightly superior to that of CH3OH. However, the performance of D2 is significantly superior to that of H2O, separation of aromatics being improved by about 30%. D2 is a particularly powerful solvent for the separation iof deuterated and non-deuterated compounds.
