    Description: Low visibility due to warm fog has caused costly disruptions in the case of aircraft schedules, and fog-related difficulties can arise in connection with Space Shuttle flights. As current methods of fog elimination are not entirely satisfactory, Kelley (1983) has proposed a new brute force procedure for warm fog dispersal. This procedure makes use of recycled water sprays. Fog droplets are removed by coalescence/rainout. Details regarding the involved approaches are described, and a demonstration of the method is discussed. Attention is given to tests conducted in October 1984, visual range improvement in response of water spray fog dispersal, a systematic investigation concerning a selection of firefighting nozzles, and histograms of fog droplet number concentration measured in the spray curtain outflow with a forward scattering spectrometer probe.

    Description: A technique is presented for generating trend or convective tendency images using a combination of GOES satellite imagery and cloud-to-ground lightning observations. The convective tendency images can be used for short term forecasting of storm development. A conceptual model of cloud electrical development and an example of the methodology used to generate lightning/satellite convective tendency imagery are given. Successive convective tendency images can be looped or animated to show the previous growth or decay of thunderstorms and their associated lighting activity. It is suggested that the convective tendency image may also be used to indicate potential microburst producing storms.

    Description: The Earth Science and Applications Division of the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center has been chartered to conduct research, and to develop and use space technology to gain a basic understanding of the earth processes with emphasis on atmospheric processes. An integral part of the research and development efforts has been the Man computer Interactive Data Access System (McIDAS). The McIDAS computer system has permitted integration of data from satellites, aircraft remote sensors, ground based meteorological data sources, and modeled atmospheric radiances. The result has been an increase in knowlege of mesoscale atmospheric processes and has enabled researchers to recommend improvements and suggestions for planned future remote sensing instruments.

    Description: Mesoscale sounding data from a truth rawinsonde network and a VAS from March 6-7, 1982 are statistically studied. The parameters of temperature, geopotential height, and mixing ratio at 850, 700, 500, 300, and 200 mb levels, and thickness and precipitable water are examined. The VAS retrieval gradients derived from a physical algorithm and from a regression technique are analyzed; the analysis reveals that both techniques have similar error characteristics and capabilities for calculating gradients of mesoscale temperature and geopotential height. Ground-truth rawinsonde data and VAS retrievals are compared; it is observed that VAS data describes weaker gradients than rawinsonde data.

    Description: The feasibility of using lightning-rate data to aid in the early warning of microburst occurrence in moist environments is illustrated. Convective tendency images were generated for a small microburst-producing storm that developed in northern Alabama on July 20, 1986 during the Cooperative Huntsville Meteorological Experiment. Radar observations were obtained from the NCAR CP2 10-cm dual-polarization Doppler radar, while the measurements of total lightning activity were provided by the National Severe Storm Laboratory, a mobile laboratory that was located under the storm throughout its lifetime. The scenario for the evolution of wet microburst producing thunderstorms is described.
