    Notes: Theophylline administered orally and (1, 3-15N,2-13C)theophylline administered intravenously in tracer quantities were used to investigate under steady-state conditions the interaction of theophylline with cimetidine in a patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Both compounds were quantified simultaneously by mass spectral-analysis after solvent extraction and high pressure liquid chromatographic purification of plasma samples. The assay is reliable and accurate to a plasma level of 50 ng mI-1 for the stable isotope tracer with a practical lower limit of detection of 10 ng mI-1.

    Notes: The 70 e V-electron impact mass spectra of the C7-C10 n-alkynes have been determined as well as the metastable ion spectra of the molecular ions and the [CS2]+ and [N2O]+ charge exchange mass spectra of the C7-C9 n-alkynes. The metastable ion mass spectra provide only a limited opportunity to distinguish between isomers; however, the 70-eV EI mass spectra of isomeric compounds permit a ready distinction between isomers. The [CS2]+ charge exchange mass spectra of isomeric compounds also show substantial differences. The [N2O]+ charge exchange mass spectra do not show the enhancement of β-fission fragments observed in field ionization experiments, despite representing ions of similar internal energy, and it is concluded that field dissociation is responsible for the β-fission fragments in the field ionization experiments.

    Notes: The charge inversion mass spectra of C1 to C3 alkoxide ions have been obtained using He, N2 and O2 as collision gases. The three collision gases show similar efficiencies for collisional charge inversion and produce similar mass spectra, although fewer high-energy oxenium ions are formed when O2 and N2 are used as collision gases. Using two collision cells and an intermediate deflector electrode the alkoxide ions have been neutralized in the first collision cell and the fast neutrals ionized in the second cell. The neutralization-reionization mass spectra obtained are similar to the direct charge-inversion mass spectra indicating that mainly alkoxyl radicals are produced, although, depending on the neutralization collision gas and the alkoxide ion studied, other neutrals are formed in small yields. Deuterium isotopic labelling has been used to show that the main fragmentation reactions of the unstable oxenium ions formed involve 1,1-elimination of H2 or an alkane.

    Notes: Two unusual sulphur-containing amino acids have been isolated from urine of a baby who died with major physical malformations and failure of growth and development. Sensitive mass spectrometric methods were used to identify the nanomole quantities of the compounds available as S-(2-carboxypropyl)-cysteine and S-(2-carboxypropyl)-cysteamine. Incubation of fibroblasts in either [14C]valine or [35S]cysteine resulted in radioactive labelling of the compounds, suggesting their origin from conjugation of methacrylic acid with cysteine and subsequent decarboxylation of the cysteine conjugate. Specific assay of methacrylyl-CoA hydratase is needed for final proof that this is a new inborn error of that enzyme, but these findings and parental consanguinity make this very likely. It seems possible that methacrylic acid or one of its derivatives may have caused the malformations present in the baby.

    Notes: The influence of inclusion complex formation between cyclodextrins (chiefly the β-polymer) and a variety of chiral antihistaminic and analgesic agents on the 1H NMR features of both guest and host partners is reported. In many cases equivalent protons of antipodes give resonances which differ in chemical shift after inclusion, and the potential value of the data to chiral analysis and to elucidation of the structures of the inclusion complexes is demonstrated.

    Description: The Martian basaltic meteorites Y980459 and QUE94201 (henceforth referred to as Y98 and QUE respectively) are thought to represent magmatic liquid compositions, rather than being products of protracted crystallization and accumulation like the majority of other martian meteorites. Both meteorite compositions have been experimentally crystallized at 1 bar, and liquidus phases were found to match corresponding mineral core compositions in the meteorites, consistent with the notion that these meteorites represent bona fide melts. They also represent the most primitive and most evolved basaltic martian samples, respectively. Y98 has Mg# (molar Mg/Mg+Fe) approximates 65, and lacks plagioclase; whereas QUE has Mg# approximates 40, and lacks olivine. However they share important geochemical characteristics (e.g. superchondritic CaO/Al2O3, very high epsilon(sub Nd) and low Sr-87/Sr-87) that suggest they sample a similar highly depleted mantle reservoir. As such, they represent likely endmembers of martian magmatic liquid compositions, and it is natural to seek petrogenetic linkages between the two. We make no claim that the actual meteorites themselves share a genetic link (the respective ages rule that out); we are exploring only in general whether primitive martian liquids like Y98 could evolve to liquids resembling QUE. Both experimental and computational efforts have been made to determine if there is indeed such a link. Recent petrological models at 1 bar generated using MELTS suggest that a QUE-like melt can be derived from a parental melt with a Y98 composition. However, experimental studies at 1 bar have been less successful at replicating this progression. Previous experimental crystallization studies of Y98 by our group at 0.5 GPa have produced melt compositions approaching that of QUE, although these results were complicated by the presence of small, variable amounts of H2O in some of the runs owing to the use of talc/pyrex experimental assemblies. Therefore we have repeated the four experiments, augmented with additional runs, all using BaCO3 cell assemblies, which are devoid of water, and these new experiments supersede those reported earlier. Here we report results of experiments simulating equilibrium crystallization; fractional crystallization experiments are currently underway.

    Description: The Energy Storage Project of NASA s Exploration Technology Development Program is developing advanced lithium-ion batteries to meet the requirements for specific Constellation missions. NASA GRC, in conjunction with JPL and JSC, is leading efforts to develop High Energy and Ultra High Energy cells for three primary Constellation customers: Altair, Extravehicular Activities (EVA), and Lunar Surface Systems. The objective of the High Energy cell development is to enable a battery system that can operationally deliver approximately 150 Wh/kg for 2000 cycles. The Ultra High Energy cell development will enable a battery system that can operationally deliver 220 Wh/kg for 200 cycles. To accomplish these goals, cathode, electrolyte, separator, and safety components are being developed for High Energy Cells. The Ultra High Energy cell development adds lithium alloy anodes to the component development portfolio to enable much higher cell-level specific energy. The Ultra High Energy cell development is targeted for the ascent stage of Altair, which is the Lunar Lander, and for power for the Portable Life support System of the EVA Lunar spacesuit. For these missions, mass is highly critical, but only a limited number of cycles are required. The High Energy cell development is primarily targeted for Mobility Systems (rovers) for Lunar Surface Systems, however, due to the high risk nature of the Ultra High Energy cell development, the High Energy cell will also serve as a backup technology for Altair and EVA. This paper will discuss mission requirements and the goals of the material, component, and cell development efforts in further detail.

    Description: The Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity has spent over six years exploring the Martian surface near its landing site at Meridiani Planum. Meridiani bedrock observed by the rover is largely characterized by sulfate-rich sandstones and hematite spherules, recording evidence of ancient aqueous environments [1]. The region is a deflationary surface, allowing hematite spherules, fragments of bedrock, and "cobbles" of foreign origin to collect loosely on the surface. These cobbles may be meteorites (e.g., Barberton, Heat Shield Rock, Santa Catarina) [2], or rock fragments of exotic composition derived from adjacent terranes or from the subsurface and delivered to Meridiani Planum as impact ejecta [3]. The cobbles provide a way to better understand Martian meteorites and the lithologic diversity of Meridiani Planum by examining the various rock types located there. In the summer of 2007, a global dust storm on Mars effectively disabled Opportunity's Miniature Thermal Emission Spectrometer (Mini-TES), which served as the Athena Science Team s primary tool for remotely identifying rocks of interest on a tactical timescale for efficient rover planning. While efforts are ongoing to recover use of the Mini-TES, the team is currently limited to identifying rocks of interest by visual inspection of images returned from Opportunity's Panoramic Camera (Pancam). This study builds off of previous efforts to characterize cobbles at Meridiani Planum using a database of reflectance spectra extracted from Pancam 13-Filter (13F) images [3]. We analyzed the variability of rock spectra in this database and identified physical characteristics of Martian rocks that could potentially account for the observed variance. By understanding such trends, we may be able to distinguish between rock types at Meridiani Planum and regain the capability to remotely identify locally unique rocks.
