Beschreibung: Further results from the Venus Orbiter radiometric temperature experiment (VORTEX) on the Pioneer Orbiter are presented. These are used to characterize the three-dimensional temperature field, the cloud structure, and the dynamics of the 60- to 130-kilometer altitude region of the Venus atmosphere. One of the new discoveries is a 'dipole' structure at high latitudes, with two hot spots rotating around the pole, surrounded by banks of cold cloud.

Beschreibung: Orbiter infrared measurements of the Venus atmosphere in the 60to 140-kilometer region show very small diurnal temperature differences near the cloud tops, increasing somewhat at higher levels. The seasonal (that is, equator to pole) contrasts are an order of magnitude larger, and the temperatures unexpectedly increase with increasing latitude below 80 kilometers. An isothermal layer at least two scale heights in vertical extent is found near the 100-kilometer altitude, where the temperature is about 175 K. Structure is present in the cloud temperature maps on a range of spatial scales. The most striking is at high latitude, where contrasts of nearly 50 K are observed between a cold circumpolar band and the region near the pole itself.

Beschreibung: Compositionally, lunar mare basalts are similar to some very young subalkaline basalts from terrestrial mid-ocean ridges and to very old pods of basaltic material incorporated into ancient metamorphic rocks. Basalt flows in Mare Imbrium are considered, taking into account the results of orbital gamma ray spectroscopic studies. The results of the analyses of lunar samples obtained from the Apollo missions are evaluated and various models are discussed in connection with an interpretation of the observed conditions.

Beschreibung: This paper describes the digital processing performed on the images of Mercury returned to earth from Mariner 10. Each image contains considerably more information than can be displayed in a single picture. Several specialized processing techniques and procedures are utilized to display the particular information desired for specific scientific analyses: radiometric decalibration for photometric investigations, high-pass filtering to characterize morphology, modulation transfer function restoration to provide the highest possible resolution, scene-dependent filtering of the terminator images to provide maximum feature discriminability in the regions of low illumination, and rectification to cartographic projections to provide known geometric relationships between features. A principal task was the construction of full disk mosaics as an aid to the understanding of surface structure on a global scale.

Beschreibung: The extensive Voyager 2 EUV spectral observations of the Jovian planetary system have produced a number of significant results. The positions of the auroral zones have been defined with the aid of support imaging to the extent that the aurora is now known to correspond to the location of the planetary magnetic field lines intersecting the Io plasma torus. The observations do not preclude the possibility of a simultaneous magnetotail aurora, but if present it must not be a dominant component. Emission in molecular hydrogen has been detected from the equatorial regions of Jupiter, which indicates planetwide electron precipitation. Hydrogen Lyman alpha from the dark side of the planet has been measured at an intensity of about 1 kilorayleigh. Occultation of Alpha Leonis by Jupiter has been observed, and the data are being analyzed in detail.

Beschreibung: The lunar surface gravimeter used the moon as an instrumented antenna to search for gravitational waves predicted by Einstein's general theory of relativity. Tidal deformation of the moon was measured. Gravitational radiation is a channel that is capable of giving information about the structure and evolution of the universe.

Beschreibung: Low frequency (below 1326 kHz) observations of Jupiter obtained from November, 1977 through June, 1978 by the radio astronomy receivers carried by the two Voyager spacecraft are reported and compared with a large body of higher-frequency ground-based observations. Although the morphology of hectometric wavelength (HOM) emissions strongly resembles that of decametric (DAM) wavelength radio noise, they display opposite polarization. DAM emissions are strongly modulated by Io, whereas HOM emissions exhibit little or no influence from any satellite and appear to be modulated by the rotation phase of the planet. Several single-source models could possibly account for these results, including a model assuming emission at two well-separated frequencies above and below the local electron plasma frequency and the model proposed by Barbosa (1976) in which electrostatic waves at twice the upper hybrid frequency couple to both the ordinary and extraordinary electromagnetic modes. However, neither of these is entirely satisfactory.

Beschreibung: The source of the lunar magnetic anomaly associated with the Rima Sirsalis linear rille has been modelled using the vector field intensities due to arbitrary uniform magnetization in a rectangular prism. It is shown that in order to match the Apollo 16 subsatellite data, the lunar surface near the rille must have a vertical magnetization of 6,000-9,000 G if the anomaly is due to flux leakage from a gap in the crust with the dimensions of the rille. An alternative explanation is that Rima Sirsalis and its surroundings are the site of a vertical magnetization contrast of 100,000-10,000 G which is at least as wide as the rille and extends to a depth of tens of kilometers in the crust. A wider magnetic source reduces the required magnetization (or depth) proportionately, since to first order the field at high altitude is proportional to the magnetic dipole moment per unit length.

Beschreibung: The Voyager 2 Planetary Radio Astronomy experiment to Jupiter has confirmed and extended to higher zenomagnetic latitudes results from the identical experiment carried by Voyager 1. The kilometric emissions discovered by Voyager 1 often extended to 1 megahertz or higher on Voyager 2 and often consisted of negatively, or less frequently, positively drifting narrowband bursts. On the basis of tentative identification of plasma wave emissions similar to those detected by Voyager 1, the plasma torus associated with Io appeared somewhat denser to Voyager 2 than it did to Voyager 1. The paper reports on quasi-periodic sinusoidal or impulsive bursts in the broadcast band range of wavelengths (800 to 1800 kHz). A Faraday effect appears at decametric frequencies, which probably results from propagation of the radiation near its sources on Jupiter. Finally, the occurrence of decametric emission in homologous arc families is discussed.

Beschreibung: Twenty-three samples covering a wide range of shock metamorphism from the Ries impact crater in southern Germany were analyzed for siderophile and volatile elements in order to determine the chemical nature of the impacting meteorite. Slight enrichments in the siderophile elements Ir and Os above the indigenous level of 0.015 ppb were observed in only eight samples, including a shocked, metal-bearing amphibolite and two weakly shocked biotite gneisses, whereas those samples expected to contain meteoritic material (heavily shocked glasses) do not exhibit a perceptible siderophile enrichment. The Ir, Os and Ni enrichments of the metal bearing amphibolite are found to be compatible with chondritic ratios, while in the other enriched samples, Ir, Ni and Se relationships suggest an achondritic meteoritic origin. An aubritic projectile is concluded to be most compatible with the data.
