    Notes: We have designed and constructed a vacuum heat treatment facility, with hot zone dimensions of 12×19×19 cm, at a cost substantially below that of a commercial unit. The design incorporates efficient water cooling and a resistive heating element. A vacuum pressure of 1.5×10−8 Torr at room temperature has been obtained after baking. The temperature limit is approximately 1900 °C. This limit results from our choice of niobium as the hot zone material.

    Notes: The instrumentation of a low-temperature three-mode gravitationa1 radiation antenna incorporating a low-noise dc SQUID provided by IBM is described. The feedback circuitry necessary to maintain the linearity and dynamic range of the SQUID was found to drive the resonant system due to high coupling between the input coil and the feedback coil of the SQUID. In order for this type of planar thin-film dc SQUID to be useful for gravitational radiation detectors and other applications requiring high Q input circuits, a solution to this feedback problem is needed. To this end, the nonlinear equations describing the dc SQUID with linear feedback are solved in terms of an isolated SQUID. The important feedback parameters for a high Q resonant system are found to be the slew rate of the electronics and the coupling constant ratio α2if/α2f, where α2if is the energy coupling efficiency between the feedback coil and input coil and α2f is the energy coupling efficiency between the feedback coil and the SQUID loop. Methods to reduce the effect of the feedback on the input circuit are also discussed.

    Notes: A 1400-kg five-mode bar detector has been constructed and tested at room temperature. Detailed calculations and computer simulations have been performed to optimize the design and study the dynamics of the system. The tests have confirmed the analytical prediction that a large fraction (67% in this experiment) of the energy deposited into the bar is transferred to the last resonator. The rise time of the energy at the last resonator is short ((approximately-equal-to)2 ms), and corresponds to an effective detector bandwidth of (approximately-equal-to)500 Hz.

    Notes: A 1.6 kg silicon monocrystal was used to make a Fabry–Perot optical cavity operated at cryogenic temperatures. High-resolution thermal expansion measurements were made as the silicon cooled to 4.2 K in order to characterize the cavity as a length reference standard. A helium–neon laser was then locked to a transmission resonance at liquid-helium temperatures, and the laser frequency tracked the cavity resonance with error fluctuations at the level of 10 Hz/(square root of)Hz in the bandwidth dc to 1 Hz. Implications of the combined set of data, thermal expansion plus frequency-tracking fluctuations, for using such a system as a frequency standard are discussed.

    Notes: The mechanical and electrical quality factors of a 10-g niobium resonator were measured at 4.4 K and were found to be 8.1×106, and 3.8×106, respectively. The value for the electrical quality factor is high enough for a system operating at 50 mK at a sensitivity level of one phonon. The resonator's low damping properties make it suitable for use as a transducer for a cryogenic three-mode gravitational radiation detector. A practical design is given for the mounting of the resonator on a 2400-kg aluminum-bar detector. Projections are made for the sensitivity of a 2400-kg bar instrumented as a three-mode system with this resonator inductively coupled to a SQUID.

    Notes: Abstract Two series of experiments investigated factors affecting utterance of food calls in the domestic hen, Gallus domesticus. The first series of experiments tested the effect of food preference and the hen’s internal state on the utterance of food calls. Different food types were presented first singly and then in a choice test to 20 hens, first when hens were laying, and then when they were maternal. The second series of experiments tested the effect of hunger level on the utterance of food calls in laying hens, and maternal hens with or without chicks. These two series of experiments showed that laying hens and maternal hens showed a similar marked preference for certain types of food, but laying hens very rarely emitted food calls, in contrast to maternal hens. This shows the effect of the bird’s psychophysiological state on her tendency to emit food calls. The more a maternal hen preferred a food type, the more food calls she emitted. This was observed from the beginning of a test in single-food tests as well as in choice tests. Hunger level positively affected food-call production under certain feeding conditions in maternal hens, but not in laying hens. When maternal hens were tested in the absence of their chicks, utterance of food calls was more sustained than in the presence of chicks.
