Beschreibung: The ratio and flat field photoclinometric methods for determining crater form topography are described. Both methods compensate for the effects of atmospheric scattering by subtracting a haze value from all brightness values. Algorithms were altered to derive relative topographic data for irregular features such as ejecta blankets, lava flows, graben and ridge scarps, dune forms, and stratified materials. After the elevations along the profiles are obtained by integration of the photometric function, a matrix transformation is applied to the image coordinates of each pixel within each profile, utilizing each pixel's integral height, to produce a projection of each profile line onto the surface. Pixel brightness values are then resampled along the projected track of each profile to determine a more correct height value for each pixel. Precision of the methods is discussed.

Beschreibung: A classification database using the reflectivity (derived from the altimetry data), rms slope, and the first principal component of altimetry and topographic slope is presented. The resultant clustered data is examined qualitatively as well as quantitatively, to establish the statistical integrity of each cluster by use of an interactive, ternary plotting algorithm. This algorithm plots, for a cluster, the position of each of its pixels within a ternary diagram whose apices represent reflectivity, rms slope, and the first principal component. The digital values in these three databases are normalized such that unity is represented by a value of 255 in each database. The frequencies of each plotted point within the ternary diagram are recorded in order to establish the mode of each cluster. The pixels of each cluster are displayed as one separate color; their ternary plot will show not only the interrelations between clusters, but also the presence of any anomalous points within a cluster. Existing lunar and terrestrial analog radar data is used to establish fields within this ternary diagram that are indicative of as many different geologic materials and tectonics settings as possible. The resultant fields are used to determine empirically the geologic significance of the clusters resulting from the cluster analysis.

Beschreibung: A physical model for the Io plasma torus is constructed to explain the EUV radiative emission observed by the Voyager UV spectrometer. Electron impact excitation rate coefficients for electronic transitions of S III, S IV, O II and O III are calculated by the method of distorted waves (Davis, Kepple, and Blaha, 1976); these coefficients account for the asymmetric shape of the 686 A feature. It is concluded that the electron gas must have a distribution function with a non-Maxwellian tail. An approximate representation of the distribution function as two temperature components requires a cold component of 3.5-4 eV and density of 2000 per cu cm and a hot component of about 100 eV and density of 50-100 per cu cm to satisfy observational constraints.

Beschreibung: The three major categories of models of lunar origin which explain the Moon's properties are complete and a more general scenario is presented. The model presented is as the Earth grew by planetesimal bombardment, a circumterrestrial cloud of particles was created from a combination of impact ejected mantle material and planetismals captured directly into orbit around the Earth. The compositional properties are explained two ways: (1) a few big late planetismals of diverse composition are captured in orbit and/or hit the Earth; and (2) the circumterrestrial swarm acts as a filter, preferentially capturing small weak silicate bodies, while passing large iron planetismals.

Beschreibung: ALHA 76005 is a basaltic achondrite containing few, if any, orthopyroxenes. Its bulk major and trace element composition is like that of a non-cumulate eucrite, and unlike that of a howardite. It contains a variety of igneous clasts which differ in their textures, pyroxene/plagioclase ratios and pyroxene and plagioclase compositions. One clast, No. 4, was found to have the REE pattern of a cumulate eucrite and an oxygen isotopic composition different from that of the bulk meteorite. Both the chemical and oxygen isotopic composition of clast No. 4 suggest that it was derived from a source different from its host. These observations lead to the conclusion that ALHA 76005 is a polymict eucrite.

Beschreibung: From 411 kg of Pacific clay, 22 mg of stony spherules and 50 mg of iron spherules larger than 150 microns were concentrated. The extraterrestrial origin of these particles was evaluated with the aid of optical and electron microscopy and atomic absorption elemental analysis. An expression for the integral number of stony particles from this sediment in the mass range 20-300 micrograms was derived. The world-wide influx rate of stony particles in the mass range which survive atmospheric heating and ocean sediment storage is calculated to be 90 tons/yr. The relative contributions of ablation debris vs fused interplanetary dust to the influx of stony spherules is discussed, but no conclusions could be made.

Beschreibung: Results of Pioneer Saturn vector helium magnetometer measurements of the magnetic field and magnetosphere of Saturn are reported. The detection of a bow shock at 23.7 Saturn radii and the magnetosphere crossing at 17.4 Saturn radii suggest an equatorial surface field of 0.3 gauss, which is similar to that of the earth, and the polarity of the field is observed to be similar to that of Jupiter and opposite to the earth's. An increase of magnetic field strength with decreasing radius indicates the dipole nature of the magnetic field, which modified by the compression of the magnetosphere by the solar wind and the presence of a ring current in the middle magnetosphere. Inversions of the field measurements to obtain equivalent dipole source vectors reveal that the tilt angle between the magnetic dipole and the rotation axis is less than 1 deg, and spherical harmonic analysis of the data indicates that the magnetic field is more uniform than those of the earth and Jupiter, consistent with a small Saturn core. An apparent hydromagnetic wake associated with Titan was also observed.

Beschreibung: The question of whether the crater population on Phobos represents a production population or an equilibrium population is considered. The absolute ages of cratered surfaces are interpreted and analyzed. A computer program was developed to study the dynamics of material ejected from Martian satellites and to investigate the hypothesis that at least some of the extensive set of linear features discovered on the surface of Phobos could be the result of secondary cratering from the Stickney impact. The possibility that Deimos was catastrophically disrupted by a large impact but subsequently reaccreted is considered as well as the probability the Phobos had an impact nearly large enough to disrupt it are also discussed.

Beschreibung: A set of Fe and Ti maps and regional values are obtained from the Apollo 15 and 16 orbital gamma ray data by energy band analysis. High-Ti basalts predominate the early and late stages of mare volcanism with high-Fe basaltic volcanism in the interim. The first evidence of a high-Ti-KREEP basalt association is found in the Aristarchus region. A N-S asymmetry for Fe and Ti in the east limb and farside highlands complicates the E-W asymmetry for Th but substantiates crustal inhomogeneity. The observed crustal inhomogeneity adds an additional objection to the primitive source model for crustal evolution. The high-Ti-KREEP basalt association and the general trend of decreasing mare basalt Ti with time lend support to the cumulate source model; however, this model cannot account for young, high-Ti maria. The dynamic assimilation model better accounts for chemical variations observed on the moon.

Beschreibung: The considered investigation is concerned with the relation between KREEP and thermal neutron flux depression. The Fe(n, n-prime gamma) concentrations of selected lunar regions were calculated by energy-band analysis of the 0.803-0.872 MeV band. The result of the investigation will be used to evaluate the reliability of the previously determined Fe(n, gamma) values. A 0.803-0.872 MeV band was isolated from the Apollo 15 and 16 orbital gamma ray spectra. Preliminary regression analysis of regional ground truth count rates and Fe concentrations showed this energy interval to be optimum for the 0.8467 MeV inelastic scatter (n, n-prime gamma)Fe peak.
