Description / Table of Contents:
The polarographic behaviour of hydroxyalkylphosphines, R2R′P, RR2′P and RR′PH (with R = C6H5, C6H11; R′ = o-C6H10OH, CH2 · CH2OH, · CH2 · CH(OH)CH3, CH2 · CH2 · CH2OH), dissolved in alcoholic salt or buffer solutions, is characterized by cathodic and anodic waves. The latter do not arise from oxidation of the phosphines but are related to mercury phosphine complexes; the half-wave potentials depend on the stability of these complexes. In weakly acid solutions cathodic waves are formed, whereby hydrogen is produced. As stronger the phosphine is adsorbed and as weaker the P—H bond of the phosphonium ion, the hydrogen overvoltage is lowered. A quantitative or ultra-micro determination of the hydroxyalkylphosphines is possible from the height of the anodic or the catalytic hydrogen waves.
Notes:
