Description: A major requirement of multispectral imaging systems for advanced earth remote sensing is the provision for greater spectral resolution and more versatile spectral band selection. The imaging spectrometer instrument concept provides this versatility by the combination of pushbroom imaging and spectrally dispersing optics using area array detectors in the focal plane. The shuttle imaging spectrometer concept achieves 10- and 20-meter ground instantaneous fields of view with 20-nanometer spectral resolution from earth orbit. Onboard processing allows the selection of spectral bands during flight; this, in turn, permits the sensor parameters to be tailored to the experiment objectives. Advances in optical design, infrared detector arrays, and focal plane cooling indicate the feasibility of the instrument concept and support the practicability of a validation flight experiment for the shuttle in the late 1980s. Previously announced in STAR as N83-28542

Description: The results of an ad-hoc committee investigation of in-Earth orbit operational anomalies noted on two identical Earth Radiation Budget Experiment (ERBE) Scanner instruments on two different spacecraft busses is presented. The anomalies are attributed to the bearings and the lubrication scheme for the bearings. A detailed discussion of the pertinent instrument operations, the approach of the investigation team and the current status of the instruments now in Earth orbit is included. The team considered operational changes for these instruments, rework possibilities for the one instrument which is waiting to be launched, and preferable lubrication considerations for specific space operational requirements similar to those for the ERBE scanner bearings.

Description: Rotational coherent Stokes Raman scattering (CSRS) and coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) in air and in nitrogen were observed simultaneously by using broadband generation and detection. In the broadband technique used, the entire CARS and CSRS spectrum was generated in a single laser pulse; the CSRS and CARS signals were dispersed by a spectrograph and detected simultaneously by an optical multichannel analyzer. A three-dimensional phase-matching geometry was used to achieve spatial resolution of the CSRS and CARS beams from the input beams. Under resonant conditions, similar experiments may provide a means of investigating the possible interaction between the CSRS and CARS processes in driving the rotational levels.

Description: Single-shot spectrally resolved broadband rotational coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) from multiple points along a line intersecting a flow has been observed for N2 and O2. A large-angle phase-matching configuration was used to achieve spatial resolution of 0.1 mm x 0.1 mm x 0.1 mm for each of 20 points in the interaction volume. Single-shot multipoint CARS of N2 at different temperatures and of several species in a coflowing jet was observed.

Description: A substantial gain in sensitivity is reported through the addition of a commercially available electrostatic image intensifier to a silicon-intensified target vidicon system. This comparatively low cost modification allows cooled or room temperature operation, CW or pulsed detection, and ease of removal or attachment. A 40-mm, first-generation technology image intensifier was used in a configuration in which the photocathode end was at negative high voltage and the phosphor end was at ground. Cooling the vidicon detector did not result in improved SNR; more generally, a 50-fold sensitivity increase was observed for the image intensifier/vidicon system.

Description: A radiometric method for the measurement of gas temperature in self-absorbing gases has been applied in the study of shock-tube-generated flows. This method involves making two absolute-intensity measurements at the same wavelength in a specified gas sample, but using two different path lengths. Experimental results are presented for reflected shock waves in air and in xenon at conditions corresponding to shock velocities from 4 to 10 km/sec and an initial driven tube pressure of 1 torr. These results indicate that, with the technique, temperature measurements with an accuracy of 5% can be carried out. The measurements in air suggest certain facility-related problems, and results obtained in the application of this measurement technique to the investigation of these problems and to the study of radiative cooling phenomena in both air and xenon are presented.
