    Description: Transforming growth factor alpha (TGF-alpha) is produced by and required for the growth of epithelial cells and is angiogenic in vivo. Since epidermal hyperplasia and angiogenesis are hallmarks of psoriasis, TGF-alpha gene expression was analyzed in epidermal biopsies of normal and psoriatic skin. TGF-alpha messenger RNA and protein are much more abundant in lesional psoriatic epidermis than in normal-appearing skin of psoriatic patients or in normal epidermis. In contrast, messenger RNA levels of transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-beta 1), which inhibits epithelial cell growth, are not significantly different in normal, uninvolved, and lesional psoriatic epidermis.     Description: Cachectin (tumor necrosis factor), a protein produced in large quantities by endotoxin-activated macrophages, has been implicated as an important mediator of the lethal effect of endotoxin. Recombinant human cachectin was infused into rats in an effort to determine whether cachectin, by itself, can elicit the derangements of host physiology caused by administration of endotoxin. When administered in quantities similar to those produced endogenously in response to endotoxin, cachectin causes hypotension, metabolic acidosis, hemoconcentration, and death within minutes to hours, as a result of respiratory arrest. Hyperglycemia and hyperkalemia were also observed after infusion. At necropsy, diffuse pulmonary inflammation and hemorrhage were apparent on gross and histopathologic examination, along with ischemic and hemorrhagic lesions of the gastrointestinal tract, and acute renal tubular necrosis.     Description: In postmortem studies of patients with schizophrenia, D2 dopamine receptors in the basal ganglia have been observed to be more numerous than in patients with no history of neurological or psychiatric disease. Because most patients with schizophrenia are treated with neuroleptic drugs that block D2 dopamine receptors in the caudate nucleus, it has been suggested that this increase in the number of receptors is a result of adaptation to these drugs rather than a biochemical abnormality intrinsic to schizophrenia. With positron emission tomography (PET), the D2 dopamine receptor density in the caudate nucleus of living human beings was measured in normal volunteers and in two groups of patients with schizophrenia--one group that had never been treated with neuroleptics and another group that had been treated with these drugs. D2 dopamine receptor densities in the caudate nucleus were higher in both groups of patients than in the normal volunteers.     Description: Cells infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) show decreased expression of the 58-kilodalton T4 (CD4) antigen on their surface. In this study, the effect of HIV infection on the synthesis of T4 messenger RNA (mRNA) and protein products was evaluated in T-cell lines. Metabolically labeled lysates from the T4+ cell line Sup-T1 were immunoprecipitated with monoclonal antibodies to T4. Compared with uninfected cells, HIV-infected Sup-T1 cells showed decreased amounts of T4 that coprecipitated with both the 120-kilodalton viral envelope and the 150-kilodalton envelope precursor molecules. In four of five HIV-producing T-cell lines studied, the steady-state levels of T4 mRNA were also reduced. Thus, the decreased T4 antigen on HIV-infected cells is due to at least three factors: reduced steady-state levels of T4-specific mRNA, reduced amounts of immunoprecipitable T4 antigen, and the complexing of available T4 antigen with viral envelope gene products. The data suggested that the T4 protein produced after infection may be complexed with viral envelope gene products within infected cells.     Description: Ozone and temperature profiles were measured in 50 balloon flights at McMurdo Station (78 deg S) during the spring of 1987. Compared to similar data obtained in 1986, stratospheric temperatures were lower and the spring time Antarctic ozone reduction was greater in magnitude, extended to higher altitude, and proceeded at a higher rate in 1987. Ozone partial pressures reached values as low as 3 nbar (as compared to about 10 nbar in 1986) in the 16- to 18-km region in early and late October, down from about 150 nbar in late August. These low values suggest essentially complete removal of ozone in this region. The upper boundary of the depletion region was observed to be 2-3 km higher than in 1986, extending to altitudes as high as 24 km in mid-September. When averaged over September, the ozone mixing ratio at 18 km decayed with a half-life of only 12.4 days, as compared to about 28 days in 1986. Adiabatic vertical motions over 1- to 2-km intervals between 12 and 20 km with consequent ozone reductions were observed in association with the formation of nacreous clouds, indicating these to be rare events on a local scale probably associated with mountain lee waves.

    Description: Global monthly mean charts for both hemispheres are given for four mid-season months, and for the pressure levels 30, 10, 1, and 0.1 mbar for temperature and 0.4 mbar for ozone. Charts of total ozone are provided separately. This set of charts shows clearly the very close coupling between the temperature and ozone distributions and demonstrates the influence of the large-scale planetary waves which give rise to very large longitudinal variations. The regular and interannual variability of temperature and ozone are discussed.

    Description: Based principally on data collected aboard the DE 1 and 2 spacecraft during the October 7 to December 1, 1981 period, plasma boundaries in the inner magnetosphere are studied. Results indicate that in the evening sector, the low-energy ion transition and the 100-eV inner edge of the electron plasma sheet are coincident with each other, with the field lines threading the 100-eV equatorward edge of the auroral electron precipitation, and with variations in magnetic activity. A characteristic energy dispersion, observed in the plasma sheet inner edges at 100 eV, 1 keV and 10 keV, with the lower energy boundaries located earthward of the higher energy boundaries, is shown to increase from the midnight sector toward dusk, and to decrease with increasing magnetic activity. In the evening sector, these boundaries are shown to be accurate signatures of the boundary between closed and open convection trajectories, and the characteristic electron energy sheet dispersion is found to be similarly governed by the convection pattern such that the inner edges may be seen as the Alfven layers at those energies.
