Beschreibung: Fluorescence lidar measurements of the hydroxyl radical require detailed information concerning collision induced processes in order to deduce the radical number density from a lidar return. The Goddard SFC OH lidar currently utilizes a broadband detector which precludes the necessity of fully understanding collisional redistribution of rotational energy within the excited state. Numerous advantages result however from the inclusion of a detector with a bandpass only slightly larger that the Doppler width of a rotational line. This however places more stringent requirements on the spectroscopy. Measurements were accordingly made of rotationally resolved quenching rates for collisions with O2, N2, and H2O. Rotational transfer rates were also measured for the same colliders. Quenching rates were measured using a Nd-YAG pumped Rh6G dye laser doubled into the UV. The OH lifetimes were measured as a function of pressure of quenching gas at total pressures of between 50 and 250 microns. Rotational transfer rates were measured by recording the emission spectrum on an intensified diode array and integrating over 10.000 laser shots.

Beschreibung: A code has been developed that solves for the transfer line chilldown time and flow and heat transfer characteristics in one-g environment. The code solves the transient, one dimensional, space averaged mass, momentum, and energy conservation equations for liquid-vapor two-phase flow in tubes. The physical configuration solved is that appropriate for bottom coolant injection in a vertically supported heated tube. Four distinct regions are considered consecutively: fully liquid, inverted annular, dispersed, and fully vapor flow. The conservation equations for both the liquid and the vapor are solved in each region separately. Also, in each region the mass and energy transport between each phase as well as the energy and momentum transport between the tube wall and the fluid are accounted for. A finite wall thickness is also considered. The model described above was solved numerically through a mixed finite difference scheme with forward time marching. The inverted annular regime was resolved using a semi-implicit finite differencing while the dispersed regime was solved explicitly. Also, a staggered mesh was used in which the velocity was resolved at mesh boundaries while all other field variables were resolved at the mesh centroids. Different mesh sizes were used depending on the region of solution. A coarse mesh was used in the dispersed flow region while a much finer mesh was used in both the inverted annular flow region and the tube walls.

Beschreibung: A high-power narrow-linewidth XeCl excimer laser system developed for use by NASA in the remote sensing of atmospheric ozone is described. The laser system is designed for incorporation in a DIAL lidar utilizing stimulated Raman generation for the reference wavelength and sophisticated data averaging techniques. The laser output has a linewidth of 0.002 nm and a beam divergence of 0.15 mrad (FWHM). The laser was operated over a six-hour period with a constant average power of 18 W and a wavelength stable to within + or - 0.0006 nm.
