Notes: We evaluate numerically the mobility of DNA chains under field-inversion gel electrophoresis (FIGE) conditions in the framework of the lakes-straits model introduced by Zimm (Phys. Rev. Lett. 1988, 61, 2965-2968; J. Phys. Chem. 1991, 94, 2197-2206). We extend the model by allowing both simple and also multiple-branched hernias; this is achieved by arranging the data structure used in the algorithm so that each fragment in a lake can be treated separately. We show that the existence of hernias allows the probe to migrate faster and that with hernias the mobility minimum in FIGE shifts to smaller field periods. These effects occur only if the electric field is strong enough. We also discuss the influence of the model's parameters on the mobility.

Description: Harmonia axyridis in the Netherlands: a gain for the fauna or an unwanted intruder\n(Coleoptera: Coccinellidae)?\nThe coccinellid Harmonia axyridis (Pallas, 1773), a well-known aphid predator originating from\nAsia, was found for the first time in the Netherlands (Heilige Landstichting near Nijmegen) in\n2002. During 2003, the species was collected at several localities in the southern part of the\ncountry. In the surroundings of Tilburg and Rotterdam the species is already considered as\ncommon. Its establishment could be the result of either survival of independently released (or\nescaped) specimens for biological control (very likely for the population in Rotterdam), or a\ncolonisation from Belgium were outbreaks of H. axyridis were recorded in the preceding years\n(likely for the surroundings of Tilburg).\nRisks and regulations with respect to the introduction of exotic species as biological control agents\nof pests in indoor and outdoor cultures are discussed. Recently, regulations have been sharpened in\nthe Netherlands, but they are too late to prevent the establishment of H. axyridis, wanted or not.\nOnce an exotic species has established itself it is virtually impossible to get rid of it.
