    Notizen: A cell theory for the prediction of the surface tension of simple liquids is adapted to polymer liquids. The combinatory, free volume and potential energy zero terms of the partition function are all modified to account for the preservation of connectivity when a surface is created. Theory and experiment are in good agreement without an adjustable surface parameter.

    Notizen: The influence of temperature and shear rate on the flow behavior of high density polyethylene (HDPE) melts during extrusion has been investigated by using a Ceast Rheovis 2100 capillary rheometer which was manufactured by the Ceast Co. in Italy. It was found that the entry pressure drop for the samples was very low during extrusion, the relationship between shear stress and shear rate did not obey the power law strictly, and the phenomenon of shear-induced crystallization was easily produced when temperature was near the melting point of the samples, even though the shear rate was not high. The dependence of the shear viscosity for the samples on temperature can be described by using the Arrhenius equation. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notizen: Ruthenium tetroxide solution was prepared in situ by oxidation of ruthenium compounds at lower oxidation states with an excess of sodium periodate. The solution was able to stain saturated polymer POM in the vapor phase and it remained effective for up to 2 weeks. The melting behavior of POM samples stained for different lengths of time was studied with DSC and the staining process was analyzed. The results indicated that ruthenium tetroxide affected both the amorphous region and the crystals. During the early stage of the staining process, the tetroxide reacted preferentially with the amorphous material near the specimen surface. Much of this affected material was washed away after the rinsing process, thus resulting in an apparent increase in crystallinity. Prolonged staining would cause more crystals to degrade; hence, the crystallinity would drop. A two-step vapor staining technique was developed to improve the contrast between the amorphous and crystalline regions of ultrathin POM sections. The lamellar structure of POM spherulites was revealed and examined under TEM. The results showed that POM spherulites possess a category 2 structure and the thickness of the lamellae is about 7 nm. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Analytical and graphical methods are combined. As an example, fugacity and activity coefficients are calculated for the nitrogen-ethylene system at 50°C. for pressures up to 500 atm.

    Notizen: Correlations of the excess Gibbs function and the activity coefficients of a binary, liquid-phase system at constant temperature depend on reduction of P-x-y data taken for the system in vapor-liquid equilibrium. It is shown that use of a full P-x-y data set is for all practical purposes based on just the P-y values. Alternative procedures require only P-x or P-y data. In any case, effective use of a full P-x-y data set can be made only if redundent experimental values of Px,y or P are compared for consistency with calculated values. This cannot be accomplished by means of the popular area test for thermodynamic consistency.

    Notizen: Through an empirical but rational appraoch to the development of equations to represent the composition dependence of the excess Gibbs function for binary liquid systems, it has been found possible to correlate VLE data precisely, even for highly nonideal systems. This makes possible the application of Barker's method to the reduction of VLE data on a routine basis. The validity of the method is demonstrated through application to several sets of data from the literature, and new experimental data are presented for six diverse binary systems in vapor-liquid equilibrium at 50°C.

    Notizen: A general treatment of fugacities of liquid mixtures yields the proper thermodynamic functions for dealing with nonidealities of liquid phases in equilibrium with vapor mixtures for systems containing supercritical components. The activity coefficients of the supercritical components may be based on standard state fugacities for the hypothetical pure liquids or on Henry's constants. A comparison of the rigorous thermodynamic equations which apply to the liquid phase for the two alternatives shows that they are equivalent.
