Notizen: A simplified technique for the dynamic analysis of geometrically nonlinear plate structures is developed. The essence of this technique is the construction of a linear substitute of the nonlinear problem. The linear substitute problem is derived from an equivalence criterion which involves balancing the energies of the linear substitute model and the nonlinear model over one period of oscillation. The linearized equations are discretized by a finite element method, and solutions at different amplitudes are obtained numerically by an incremental-iterative scheme. To verify the equivalent energy linearization approach, example problems consisting of the free and forced vibration of nonlinear circular plates with various boundary conditions are studied. All results are compared to theoretical and numerical solutions in the literature. In addition, the forced vibration results are compared to available experimental results. These comparisons tend to validate the assumptions made in the equivalent energy linearization procedure. The proposed method is found to be computationally more efficient than other available procedures.

Notizen: In this paper we introduce finite element methods of Petrov-Galerkin type for the approximate solution of two-point boundary-value problems for singularly perturbed, second-order, ordinary, linear differential equations. We write down Petrov-Galerkin methods on a uniform mesh which have asymptotic error estimates, as the mesh size tends to zero, whose magnitude is independent of the singular perturbation parameter. This is in marked contrast to standard finite element methods which do not possess such a property on a uniform mesh. For these, typically, the error on a fixed uniform mesh blows up as the singular perturbation parameter tends to zero. This robust behaviour of these Petrov-Galerkin methods for singularly perturbed problems is achieved by choosing trial spaces of standard piecewise polynomial type, while the test spaces consist of hinged piecewise polynomials. We consider self-adjoint and non-self-adjoint two-point boundary-value problems with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We define hinged test spaces for both types of problem. We then introduce a number of sample problems and we present numerical solutions of these sample problems using a Petrov-Galerkin method with the appropriate hinged test space.

Notizen: A theory is described which guarantees an upper and lower bound estimate of the discretization error in numerical solutions of elliptic boundary value problems. This method gives bounded global estimates of the error in the energy norm. Pointwise estimates of the error in the solution variable or its derivatives can then be obtained if the numerical solution is exhibiting pointwise monotonic convergence. The versatility of this method is illustrated by its application to numerical solutions from finite element, finite difference and boundary element methods.

Notizen: The small-displacement free vibration of elastic Euler-Bernoulli beams subjected to non-uniform axial forces and the buckling of elastic columns are both analysed by means of various types of beam finite elements. The procedure incorporates beams and columns of varying cross-sections, such as linear tapers, inhomogeneous beams and columns, distributed axial forces, elastic end and interior restraints and point masses with linear and rotary inertias. All of these topics individually or in some combinations have been analysed by others. The purpose of this paper is to bring together under a single umbrella the various problems studied by others, and to provide the solution to one problem apparently not yet solved - the buckling and vibration of tapered columns under non-uniform axial thrust. The mass, stiffness and geometric stiffness matrices for the standard beam element are fully written out for direct incorporation into existing finite element programs. A FORTRAN subroutine for generating these matrices, and those for various higher-order beam elements, is also provided.

Notizen: The boundary element method (BEM) has been known for some time to be extremely useful for the solution of elastic stress analysis problems involving high stress/strain gradients. In particular, the method has been extensively used for the study of both two and three-dimensional fracture mechanics problems. Recent analytical and numerical developments coupled with the general availability of greatly increased computing capacity have made both elastic and inelastic three-dimensional stress analysis feasible for complex geometries such as those found in gas turbine engine components. This paper summarizes the features of an advanced stress analysis method based on BEM for elastic and inelastic analyses of multizone or substructured three-dimensional solids. The elastic analyses involve isotropic or cross anisotropic media with thermal and centrifugal loading. The inelastic analyses include isotropic plasticity with variable hardening and kinematic plasticity with multiple yield surfaces.

Notizen: This article presents a numerical procedure for the analysis of a planar, continuous, flexible member. Large displacements and rotations, non-linear material behaviour and general cross sections are admitted. A shooting method is utilized along with Newton-type iteration for improved estimates. The resulting computer program is used to compare with numerical and analytical solutions of problems solved by others, and to present the solution to a problem which brings out very clearly the effects of both geometric and material non-linearities.

Notizen: This article presents a shooting-type numerical procedure for the analysis of a planar, continuous and flexible member where the material is permitted to unload and reload plastically. A kinematic type of strainhardening rule is employed, and large displacements, large rotations and general cross section shapes are admitted. Though numerical and semi-analytical solutions exist in the literature for specific problems where the internal and external loads increase monotonically (see, for example, References 1-4), little attention has been paid to problems where these loads (specifically internal loads) are permitted to decrease or reverse direction. In the present work a comparison is made with the solution to one such problem found in the literature, and the solution to four additional problems is given to show the versatility and usefulness of the method.

Notizen: The NONSS method for numerically integrating time-dependent constitutive equations requires evaluation of the partial derivatives of the constitutive equations. A numerical method for evaluating these partial derivatives has been developed, thus avoiding the cumbersome task of analytically re-deriving the partial derivatives when improvements to the constitutive model are evaluated. This method is based upon the adaptive finite-difference algorithm published by Stepleman and Winarsky. Modifications of their algorithm are described that allow its efficient use within an extended version of NONSS, called NONSS-ND.Using the MATMOD constitutive equations, the capabilities of NONSS-ND are demonstrated by comparing the results of a wide variety of deformation simulations with those of NONSS, for which the derivatives are computed from analytical solutions. The numerical differentiation within NONSS-ND is shown to be sufficiently accurate for use in integrating time-dependent constitutive equations, but results in a 30-100 per cent increase in computation time. Multi-element structural calculations are therefore found to be uneconomical, but NONSS-ND is well suited for testing alternative constitutive models owing to its accuracy and its general applicability to highly non-linear systems of differential equations.

Notizen: This paper presents the development of a straightforward displacement type triangular finite element for bending of a flat plate with the inclusion of transverse (or lateral) shear effects. The element has twenty two degrees of freedom consisting of ten for the lateral displacement of the midplane and six for rotations of the normal to the undeformed midplane of the plate. The latter are taken as independent of the slopes of the deformed midplane in order to include deformation due to transverse shear. The element is fully conforming and may be orthotropic. At interelement boundaries, the element matches adjacent elements both with respect to lateral displacement of the midplane and the rotations of the normal. The result is an efficient ‘linear moment’ triangular element but with transverse shear deformation included. Numerical computations for a number of examples are presented. The results show the element to be more flexible than most other finite element models and agree closely with those from a numerical solution of the three dimensional elasticity equations. The results also converge to those from thin plate theory when the thickness to length ratio becomes small or when the transverse shear moduli are artificially increased.

Notizen: A unified numerical method to integrate stiff time-dependent constitutive equations has been developed. This method is a stable, non-iterative and self-correcting solution procedure which works successfully over a wide range in strain rate sensitivity. Time steps are automatically controlled during integration to achieve a user-specified accuracy. This method is implemented in the program package NONSS whose dual purpose is examination of the behaviour of unified constitutive models by themselves (‘one-element behaviour’) as well as providing a computationally efficient subroutine for utilizing such models with existing finite element programs for non-linear structural and metal forming analyses. This paper first reviews the relation between the numerical characteristic of constitutive equations and the choice of integration methods. Then the paper presents the derivation of the governing basic equations in the new method, and also derives a special algorithm which permits large integration steps within the negative strain rate sensitivity (‘serrated yielding’) regime. Examples of the program's performance are given, including plasticity at high and low temperatures, cyclic deformation and multiaxial straining.
